A. O; NUTTALL SAMPLE CASE Filed Aug. 20. 1921' wmz ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 8, 1924.
IAMAGGv ARTHUR O. NUTTALL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SAMPLE CASE.
Application filed August 20, 1921. Serial No. 493,908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR O. NUTTALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sample Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a sample case for use by salesmen and an object of the invention is to provide a sample case particularly designed for preserving perishable edibles or other analogous articles, to permit a saleman to carry samples of his goods in attractive condition during warm weather.
Salesmen have considerable trouble in car rying samples in hot weather and it is an object of this invention to provide an improved sample case havin a compartment for containing samples w ich is partially surrounded by a refrigerant containing compartment permitting IPIQSBI'VfitlOD of the samples such as butter, gelatine, candies, or the like in their proper original state, and also to provide a sample case as specified which is designed to prevent the sweating or the collection of condensation on its outer snr face and on the inner surface of the sample containing compartment.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description and in the accompanying drawing wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the improved sample case.
Fig. 2 is a horizonal section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawing the improved sample case comprises an outer casing or body shell 1 which is preferably rectangular in shape and which has an inner wall 2 spaced inwardly therefrom the upper edges of which are outwardly turned as shown at 3 and soldered to the outer casing or body shell 1 a short distance downwardly from the upper edge of the body shell 1. The spaced walls 1 t 1 and 2 form an air chamber 4 therebetween designed to prevent condensation on the outer surface of the body shell 1. A sample containing compartment 5 is supported centrally within the bod shell 1 and has the upper edges 6 of its si es bent outwardly and upwardly and soldered to the body shell 1 for supporting the sample containing compartment forming wall in place. The compartment 5 is surrounded by an air space 7 which is designed to prevent the formation of condensation on the inner surface of the wall of the compartment to prevent its effect upon the material contained in the compartment. The outer wall 8 of the air space 7 has its upper edge 9 inturned and soldered and the wall of the compartment 5 on a plane flush with the plane of the outturned edge 3, the said edges 3 and 9 forming ledges for supporting the removable covers 10 which form closures for the upwardly opening ends of the refrigerant containing compartment 11 which is substantially 'U-shaped and extends along each end and beneath the bottom of the compartment 5 as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The removable closures 10 have depending portions 12 which fit snugly into the upper open ends of the refrigerant containing compartment 11 and they have sealing strips 13 attached to their end surfaces which engage the ledges formed by the edges 3 and 9 forming a right closure for the refrigerant containing compartment. Handles 14 are hingedly connected to the covers 10 to facilitate the removal of the covers whendesired.
Hinged covers 15 are provided for engaging over the covers 10 and the covers 15 are hingedly connected as shown at 16 to the body shell 1, having their outer side and end edges downturned forming flanges 17 which engage over the adjacent portions of the outer surface of the body shell 1 while their inner edges project slightly beyond the wall of the compartment 5 which wall forms a support for the inner side edges of the hinged covers 15. A cover 18 which forms a.
closure for the compartment 5, is hingedly connected as shown at 19 to the body shell 1 and it has a downturned flange 20 along its free edge for engagement along the outer surface of one side of the body shell 1. The covers 15 and the flange 20 are movable independently of each other so that access may be had to the compartment 5 without opening either of the covers 15 but the cover 20 must be opened to permit opening of either of the covers 15 the said cover having its edges overlapping adjacent edges of the covers 15.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be apparent that a carrying sample lill case has been provided by means of whichv perishable commodities may be preserved in an attractive state for protracted periods enabling salesmen to present samples of their goods in an attractive form to prospective purchasers as Well as one Which can be easily and conveniently replenished with ice or other refrigerant.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in various other manners and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
l. A sample carrying case comprising a sample containing compartment, a refrigerant compartment about said sample containing compartment, said compartments having double walls with air spaces therein, removable sealing covers for said refrigerant compartment, hinged covers mounted over said sealing covers. and a hinged cover for said sample containing compartment, said sample compartment cover having its edges overlapping the edges of the hinged covers of said refrigerant compartment.
2. A sample carrying case comprising a sample coi'itaining compartment, :1 refrigerant compartment partly about said sample containing compartment said compartments having double walls with air spaces therein, certain of said Walls having their upper edges bent laterally and attached to the other of the walls to provide cover supporting shoulders, and removable sealing covers for said refrigerant compartment.
sample carrying case comprising a sample containing compartment, a refrigerant compartment partly about said sample containing compartmentsaid compartments having double walls with air spaces therein, certain of said Walls having their upper edges bent laterally and attached to the other of the Walls to provide cover supporting shoulders, and removable sealing covers for said refrigerant compartment, hinged covers mounted over said sealing covers, and a hinged cover for said sample containing compartment.
4. A sample carrying case comprising a sample containing compartment, a refrigerant compartment partly about said sample containing compartment said compartments having double walls with air spaces therein, certain of said Walls having their upper edges bent laterally and attached to the other of the walls to provide cover supporting shoulders, and removable sealing covers for said refrigerant compartment. hinged cove-rs mounted over said sealing covers, and a hinged cover for said sample containing compartment, said sample compartmentcover having its edges overlapping the edges of the hinged covers of said refrigerantcompartment.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
