Description

H.COPE.
Dour-Checks. 1 No 148 037, Y, Pa.renredmarchs,1874.
UNITED STATES- PA'IENT OFFICE.,
HENRY COPE, OF NEW SHARON, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-CHECKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,037, dated March 3, 187i; application ilrd I December 5, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY COPE, of New Sharon, in the county of Mahaska andvState of Iowa, have invented a new, useful, and Improved Door Stop and Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure l represents the lower part of the free end of a door provided with one part of my improved device; it also represents the base or mop board provided with the other part of my device, arranged to engage the part upon the door when the latter is fully opened. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the part to be attached to the door; Fig. 3, a bottom view of the same, and Fig. -4 a front elevation of the part to be attached to the base-board.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of my invention is to make an improved device for the purpose of preventing .the door-knob from striking the wall when the door is fully open, and which will also prevent the door from being accidentally closed. For thepurpose of accomplishing the object above specified, my invention consists of a stop and fastener, constructed substantially as hereinafter described, and fully set forth in the claim.
`In the drawing, A represents the free edge of an open door, and B is the base or mop board of the room into which the door opens. C is one part of my device, arranged upon the door. rIhe part O consists of a rectangular piece, made, preferably, of metal. a is a beveled rib, projecting downward from the edge ofthe horizontal part of the part C. D is that part of my device which is attached to the base-board. This part consists of a piece of spring-metal, bent substantially as shown in Fig. l, -the object being to form a yielding catch, af, arranged for engagement with the rib a. If deemed preferable, the part D may be attached to a base-plate, as shown at D. The part D should also project far enough into the room to prevent the door-knob from striking` the wall when the door is fully opened. I make the part O rectangular, in order that it may be readily attached to the door by means of screws passed through its vertical part; but the parts C and D may be fastened in their respective positions by any suitable means. The part C may be arranged upon the base-board, and the partl) upon the door; and the position of both of these parts may be inverted from that shown, and they may be arranged in any position which will admit of the engagement of the rib a with the catch a', and prevent the knob from striking the wall when the door is fully open.
It will be perceived, from the foregoing description and from reference to the drawing, that the parts O and D may be readily engaged and disengaged, but that their engage ment will, under ordinary circumstances, prevent the door from being accidentally closed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A door check and fastener consisting of the pieceD, made of spring metal, and bent in the manner shown and described, forming a yielding arm, provided with the wedge-shaped pro- HENRY COPE.
Vitnesses:
