To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC C. NOBLE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Weighting Devices for Spinning Machines and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices such as saddles and weight hooks for exerting pressure on the top rolls of spinning machines and the like.
It is a common expedient in the art to provide saddle or weight hooks of special construction for the purpose of minimizing friction and chattering in dead-weighting the top rolls, and this invention constitutes an improvement upon constructions heretofore known and used for the above mentioned purpose.
In British patent to Hart-cliffe, No. 2725 of 1855 there is disclosed a weight hook provided with a plurality of rotatable bearing members which rest upon the top roll and exert pressure thereon. It has been found, however, that the construction disclosed in the patent, by reason of the forked forma tion of the end of the weight hook and the relation of the roller to the supporting portions of the weight hook, is unsatisfactory due' to the fact that grease and dirt collect between the rollers and the weight hook, and also because of the expense in constructing the weight hook as disclosed.
An object of this invention is to provide a weight hook or saddle of simple and inex pensive construction provided with a plurality of rotatable bearing members adapted to engage the spinning machine rolls and to maintain the weight hook and saddle member itself in spaced relation to the rolls,
thereby minimizing friction andwear upon the rolls.
Another object of the invention is to arrange the bearing rollers upon the saddle or hook in such a way that grease, dirt and other foreign matter will not collect upon the rolls and between the rolls and the weight hook or saddle strip.
A still further object of the invention is to eliminate the necessity for frequent lubrication of the saddle or weight hook, as is required in connection with the use of saddles and weight hooks generally employed.

Referring to the drawings for a more detailed description, 10 (Fig. 1) represents a weighting device comprising a strip having a hooked upper end 11 adapted to extend over the reduced hub or neck portion 12 of the roll of a spinning or like machine. The lower end of the strip may also be provided'with a hook formation 12 adapted to be engaged by a weight 13, a portion of which is shown in Fig. 1. In accordance with the invention, the strip is provided at its upper hooked end 11 with rotatable bearing members, in the present instance rollers 14, which are suitably supported upon studs 15 extending through the strip 10. The rollers are supported in pairs with the individual members of the pairs on the opposite sides of the strips. The pairs of rollers are arranged in spaced relation, and the periphery of the rollers extends below the inner edge of the strip so that the strip is maintained spaced from the spinning roll hub.
By positioning the rollers upon opposite sides of the strip the balance of the strip is at all times maintained, and it readily adjusts itself to the spinning machine roll. At the same time, an ordinary weight hook may be employed without specially constructing a hook, as is necessary in the device disclosed in the patent above referred to.
In order to prevent the accumulation of grease between the rollers and the strip and the consequent retarding of the rotation of the rollers, the rollers are specially constructed so that there is a minimum area of contact between the inner side of the rollers and the strip. By reference to Fig. 3 it will be observed that the sides of the rollers adjacent the strip are tapered, as indicated at 16, and immediately adjacent the strip, around the studs 15, the rollers are of materially reduced diameter.
The outer faces 17 of the rollers are concaved; this prevents engagement of the ends of the stud with the shoulder .12 f the spinning roll, and also presents but alsm all surface of the outer sides of the rollersto the ends of the leather bosses upon theroll. It should be understood that numerous modifications may readily be made in the construction of theweighting device shown in the accompanying drawings and herein described in detail without departing-from the scope .o f the invention, the invention. not being limited to the. particular type .ofbean .jng members .orto the particularshape of the supporting strip shown and described.
