UNITED STATES 1,479,780 PATENT OFFICE;
WILLIAM F. ALBERT, OF DETROIT. MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN LADY CORSET COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
CORSET.
Application filed March 24, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. ALBERT,
a citizen of the United States of America.
residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne 6 and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (lorsets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to corsets and more particularly to corsets of the front lacing type. It is the object of the invention to provide a corset having its front portion sufficiently extended downwardly to form an abdominal covering and support, and to present a smooth surface to be embraced by exterior garments, so that the latter may fit snugly, presenting an improved appear ance and securing increased comfort as compared to corsets having the ordinary cutaway front portion.
A further object is to provide a corset having an abdominal portion, as above set forth, which portion is provided with an individual lacing permitting it to be conformed to the body as snugly may he desired. said lacing having a suliicient elasticity to permit a certain amount of expansion or contraction in the lower portion of the garment such as has hitherto been secured only by providing the body of the garment with elastic portions.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view of one form of the invention; and
Figure 2 is a similar view of an alternative form.
In these views. the reference character A designates an ordinary lacing arranged at the front of a. corset body B and extending between a row of eyelets C adjacent one edge of said body, and a corresponding row of eyelets D provided in a vertically-elongated strip E connected by quick detachable fastenings F to the other vertical edge of the body B. The strip E extends from the top of the corset to substantially the waist line thereof. on the lower or abdominal portion of the garment, the edge thereof with which said strip has quick dctachable connection carries the flap G forming a flexible continuation of said strip having a width substantially equal to that of the strip. The adjacent ends of said flap 55 and strip slightly overlap and are adapted Serial No. 284,811.
to be connected by quick detachable fasteners H and I. Said flap is provided with a row of eyelets J in alignment with the eyelets of the strip E and through the eyelets J and the lowermost eyelets C of the opposed edge portion of the body B there is extended a lacing K forn'ied of material having sufficient elasticity to permit a certain amount of expansion and contraction in the abdominal portion of the garment when the same is in use. At the loweredge of the flap G and at a corresponding point upon the opposite edge portion of the body B, there are secured hose supporters L which. when the garment is in use, exert a tension upon the engaged portions of the garment, whereby said portions are prevented from wrinkling and are held snugly in abdoi'ninal engagement with the body.
The form of the invention shown in Figure 1 is best adapted for use by persons who are somewhat stout, since in a garment designed for such persons. there is a greater necessity for expansion and contraction in the abdominal portion of the garment and the elastic lacing allows the necessary yielding and may be adjusted whenever desired to secure a tension satisfactory to the wearer. The construction shown in Figure 2 is adapted for persons of a comparatively slender build, the elastic lacing in such cases being unnecesary and being omitted as are also the eyelets in the flap G and in the lower portion of the opposed edge of the body B.
In both forms of the invention there is sc- 'cured an abdominal supporting effect and the front abdominal portion of the body is provided with a smooth unwrinkled covering which permits the exterior garments to fit snugly and comfortably. The tension applied vertically to the flap G by the hose supporter L is transmitted to the strip E by the fasteners H and I and the wrinkling and gapping which would occur in the absence -of said fasteners, is avoided.
In various corset constructions hitherto designed, elastic inserts have been sewed in the lower portion of the garment to permit of such expansion and contraction as is at various times desirable as, for example, when the wearer of the garment changes from a standing to a sitting position, or vice versa. Such constructions have been found objectionable, however, because of the fact that the elasticity of the inserts becomes exhausted a considerable time before the gar ment is Worh and any provision for giv ing renewe elasticity to the garment is lacking. In applicants construction, above described, this defect-is remedied since the lacing K is depended upon to provide the requisite elasticity and when said lacing loses this quality, it can readily be renewed at a vegy slight expense.
hat I claim as my invention is:
1. A :corset comprising a body member. a vertically elongated strip :detachably secured to a vertical edge of said body memher, a. lacing connecting said strip to the op posed vertical edge of tl emody member, a flap arran ed beneathsaid strip forming a downward extension thereof and permanentl; secured directly to the first mentioned vertical edge, and hose supporters respectively engaged Withsaid flap and 'Wlth the opposed-edge of the body member.
-A corset comprising a, body member, a; strip detachahly secured to a .vertical ed e of said-{body member. a lacing securing said strip to the p pposed yerticgl ed e of the body member, m ap carriedfby t s edge of the body member with Which said strip is engaged, said flap being arranged beneath said strip and forming a downward extension thereof, and a lacing connecting said flap with the opposed edge of the body member.
3. A corset comprising a body member having adjacent vertical edges at the front thereof, a strip detachablysecuredto one of said edges, a lacingiconnectin said strip to the other of said edges, a lip projecting from the edge to which said strip is-idetachably secured, said flap forming an extension of said strip beneath the same, means detachably engaging the upper edge of said flap with the lower edge ,of said strip, and hose supporting members attachedto said flap and to the corresponding opposed edge portion ofthe body member.
In testimony whereofl'efiix my signature.
