Be' it known that I, SIDNEY P. JONES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Waco, in the countyl of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaving Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful f improvements in shaving machines.
The invention relates to that type of shaving machine 'which has a shuttle cutting blade operating between side guards for shaving off the beard from the human face and this invention has for its principal object certain improvements and refinements over the device set forth in my co-pending application led February 8th, 1923, Ser.
No. 617,756. y i0 The object of the invention is to provide side guards related to the cutting edges of the shuttle blade in such a manner as to preclude the possibility of injuring the face,
but giving the most effective and desirable' :5 shavin results. An important advantage of the invention is that the machine may be moved in reverse directions while shaving .or in any other direction, which make for quick and smooth shaving without irritation.
An improved feature resides in the curvature and skirt of the guard which enables the barber to do closer work and to handle the machine more freely, as well as makingk a better disposition of the lather and cut hairs.

A construction designed to carry out the invention will be hereinafter described together with other features of the invention. .The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following speciication and by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which an example of the invention is shown, and wherein:

In the drawings the numeral 10 indicates a tubular handle havin a head 11 at its upper end which is provided with av laterally offset bracket-12 extending longitudinally of the handle and head. Guard members composed of transverse teeth 14 curve outwardly and downpockets and provide loo wardly from va connecting bar 15 and terminatel at their lower yends in an edge strip 16. The guards have ears 17 at each lend receiving screws 18, whereby they are adjustably fastened to the sides of the bracket.
The face of the bracket has guide ribs 19 between -whicha guideway is formed Vfor a carrier 20. A shuttle slot 21 is formed longitudinally of the face between the ribs and the carrier is mounted to reciprocate therein. The carrier has an outwardly directed marginal flange 22 overhanging the ends of the slot and extending laterally over the face of the bracket to the ribs, as is best shown lin Figs. 7 and 8. The carrier has a reduced "longitudinal boss 23 extending centrally above the flange. One end of the boss is provided with an inwardly directed slit 24, whereby the boss overhangs the flange. An elongated double edge cutting blade 25 has a central slot of such size as to fit around the boss, when confined in the slit, which is accomplished by engagin the blade over the end of the boss and sliding it in to the slit and then pressing the other end of the slot portion down around the boss.
A fastening button 26 having under-cut edges is countersunk in the top of the boss at the end opposite the slit 24. This button 4has a shank 27 depending through a shouldered slot 30 in the carrier and receiving a coiled spring 28 confined by a nut 29, whereby the button is resiliently held in place. When the blade has been placed the button is turned transversely of the boss, whereby its under-cut edges ride up over the blade and fasten the latter in place. Of course any other suitable means for fastening the blade to the carrier may be used. For
cushioning the carrier at the ends of its stroke I provide plungers 31 secured in the ends of coiled springs 33 mounted in recesses 32 at the ends of the slot 21. The plungers have rounded ends engaging in notches or seats 34 in the ends of the carrier.
The under side of the' carrier is concaved to lit 'on a cylindrical carriage 35 adapted to shuttle in a cylindrical bore 36 formed in the bracket between the channels 13 and contiguous to the slot 21. .A screw 37 passing through the carrier engages threads in the carriage; while a screw post 38 having its head coun`tersunk in the boss 23 extends through the carrier and is threaded through' the roller 39, whereby a shuttle motion is imparted to the carriage when the wheel is revolved. The cam shaft is supported by a space collar 47 in a self-oiling bushing 48 having circumferential pockets lfor receiving cup grease. A central circumferential groove 49 receives a set screw 50 in the head, whereby the bushing is held against endwise displacement and rotation. When the bushing is heated by the rotation of the cam shaft the grease will flow through ports 51 and lubricate the shaft. Itwill be seen that while the grease may overflow into the chamber 41, or the lubricant stored in said chamber and the bore 36, may flow into the slot 21, the flange 22 on the carrier will prevent any leak around the blade 25.
The pitch of the cam wheel 46 controls the amplitude of the reciprocation of the carriage and experience has shown that a very short movement is required, satisfactory results having been obtained with a shuttle o-f less than one-eighth of an inch. In order to protect the skin an elongated guard plate 52 has a hinge lug 53 pivoted in the lower end of the bracket. The plate has a stud 55 at its upper end engaging in the aperture of a latch spring 56 secured on the upper end of the bracket. and latch spring hold the guard plate over the blade 25 without creating a frictional contact therewith. The plate has a longitudinal recess 54 in its under side 4accommodating the boss 23 of the carrier. By springing the latch spring 56 the guard plate 52 may be quickly swung down (as in Fig. 5) tovexpose the blade.
The plate is of such Width as to expose the cutting edges of the blade which project beyond the edges of the plate. The outer surface of the plate is curved transversely, so that when the plate is pressed against the skin it may be rocked to either side to bring one of the cutting edges into contact with the beard. The plate provides a smooth guide or shoe for running the machine over the face. The arrangement. and shape of the guards makes for efficient shaving, but is of course subject to variation. The edges of the blades are substantially flush with the highest points of the guards and the teeth or ribs 14 of the guards may be slightly notched to clear the edges of the blade if necessary. The screws 18 and the ears 17 provide for an adjustment of the guards with relation to the edges of the blade, but it is within the scope of the invention to make the guards stationary. The connect ing bar 15 is spaced from the sides of the bracket and this provides elongated openings 57 under the blade and which establish connection with the latch channels 13. The parts are exaggerated in the drawings, particularly the curves of the guard plate 52 and the guards, but it is intended that the cutting edges shall only be exposed and presented to such a degree as to cut the beard and not cut the skin ofthe face. It will be seen that the lather and cut hairs will pass freely through the guards and -speed from the driving means is desired, a
gear train is used. An elongated case ,or housing 58 has an externally screw threaded collar 59 which is screwed into the lower end of the head 11. At the other end of the housing a depending internally' screw threaded collar 60 is provided at the other end of the housing and receives the upper end of the handle. A spur gear 6lA is mounted on the lower end of the cam shaft 44 in theA housing and collar 59. A drive shaft 62, is mounted in the handle and has a pinion 63 on its upper endwithin the housing and meshing with the gear. A flange 64 extends from the housing at the base of the head and provides an additional surface for gripping the head.
In the handle are mounted a pair of bushings 65 held by set screws 66 and of substantially the same construction as the bushing 48. The bushings support the drive shaft 63 which has its lower end shaped to connect with a flexible drive shaft 67. A universal coupling is formed at the lower end of the handle and includes a plurality of balls 68 pressed through apertures of i smaller diameter and retained therein by a circular coiled spring 69. The spring is con-` fined in an annular case 70 on the handle and forces the balls into a groove 67'- in the shank of the flexible shaft 67. This coupling' will attach various sizes of flexible shafts.
In using the machine the beard is lathered in the usual manner and the machine is attached to the iexible shaft 67 the latter being driven by an electric motor or other power means. It is within the scope of the invention to`mou1t an electric motor (not shown) within the handle 10 for the purpose of revolving the shaft 63. The shaft 63 being set in motion causes the blade 25 to shuttle by reason of the reciprocation of the carriage 35 by the cam wheel 46. The speed of revolution of the drive shaft is reduced when transmitted to the shaft 44 by means of the gear 61 and pinion 62, but
as before stated the pinion and gear might be omitted and the cam shaft driven directly by the drive shaft. The operator grasps the head 11, the flange 64 and the channels 13 accommodating the lingers and thumb of the operators hand. The bracket l2 being offset laterally from the handle enables t-he operator to coil his fingers around the handle under the bracket. The machine is held transversely or at right angles to the position shown in Fig. 2 and with the guard plate 52 in Contact with the face of the person being shaved.
It will be noted that the face of the bracket and the blade 25 are substantially parallel to the longitudinal yaxis of the handle and are offset laterally from said handle, whereby the blade and guards may be placed in contact with the face of the person being shaved and the machine held in a position simulating that in which the ordinary straight edge razor is held. By rocking the head downwardly the lowermost guard teeth 14 and the lower cutting edge of the blade are brought into Contact with the beard. The shaving is carried out by a downward sweep of the machine. By again rocking the head, but inthe opposite direction, the uppermost guard teeth and cutting edge are brought into contact with the beard, and a reverse strokemay thus be made upwardly of the face. Various strokes may thus be executed and the shaving operation carriedA under the guarda-which are ample enough to accommodate a full shave. The openings 57 make for a rapid clearingof the edges of the blade from the lather. When the shave is finished the machine may be subjected toa stream of hot water for cleansing.
What I claim is:
1. In a shaving machine, a support having a slot in its face, a blade carrier extending through the slot of the support from within the latter, operating means for shuttling the carrier mounted in the support, and a marginal flange on the carrier overhanging the face of the support contiguous to the slot and in close proximity to said face, whereby lubricants are prevented from passin through the slot and outwardly aroun the carrier, and a shuttle blade mounted on the carrier.
2. In a shaving machine, a handle member, a head carried bv the handle. a bracket having its face offset radially from the head and handle, a cutting blade having its edges overhanging the sides of the bracket, guards mounted on each side of the bracket and adjustable toward and from the blade, and means in the head and bracket for imparting a shutt-le movement to the blade.
3. In a shaving machine, a handle member a head carried by the handle, a bracket head for imparting a vshuttle movement to c carrying element.
4. In a shaving machine, a handle member, a head mounted on the handle, a bracket carried by the head, said bracket having an elongated slot, a carriage mounted to shuttle in the bracket, a carrier mounted on the carrlage and reciprocating in theslot of the bracket, means at each end of the slot for cushioning the carrier, a blade mounted on the carrier, and means for reciprocating the 4carria e.
5. n a shaving machine, a handle member, a head carried by the handle, a bracket havinlg its face olfset radially from the head and handle, guards on each side of the bracket, opemngs between the guards and the sides of the bracket, a cutting blade having its edges contiguous to the guards, a transversely curved guard plate removably mounted over 'the blade and between the uards, and means in the head and bracket or imparting a shuttle movement to the blade.
6. In a shaving machine, a handle member, a head carried by the handle, a bracket havin'g its face offset radially from the head and handle, guards on each side of the bracket, openings between the guards and the sides of the bracket, a cutting blade having its edges contiguous to the guards, a
transversely curved guard plate over the blade, a carriagey 4carrying the blade and mounted in the bracket, and means in the the carri e.
7. In a s aving machine, a handle member, a head carried by the handle, a bracket having its face offset laterally from the head and handle, guide-ribs on each side of the vface forming a guideway therebetween, a
blade carrying element having an overhan ing flange in the guideway, a cutting bla e mounted on the element and extending over the ribs, a guard plate mounted over the blade and the carr ing element, ards on each side of the ri s, and means or reciprocatingg the carrying element.
' 8. In a shaving machine, a'handle member, ahead carried by the handle, a bracket vhaving its face off-set laterally from the head and handle, guide ribs on each side of thev face forming a` guideway therebetween, a blade carrying 4element having an overhanging flange 1n the guide-way, a cutting blade mounted on the element and extendin over the ribs, a guard plate mounted over tie blade and the carrying element, guards on each side .of the ribs, a reciprocating carriage in the bracket connected with the ca ing element, a cam wheel in the head reclprocating the carriage, and means in the handle for rotating the cam wheel.
9. In a shaving machine, a head, a bracket extending radially from the head and havc and having its face disposed longitudinally of the head, a cutting'blade supported to shuttle over the face of the bracket, and open guard members adjustable on the sides of the bracket in lanes at an angle to the cutting edges of t e blade.
11. In a shaving machine, a handle, a head mounted on the handle and having a chamber, a cam Awheel mounted in the chamber, a bracket offset laterally from the head, a bore inthe bracket, a carriage in the bore, a slot between the chamber and bore, a carriage reciprocating element extending through the slot and engaging the wheel, the bracket having a slot in its face, a carrier mounted in the slot, and carried by the carriage, a flange on the carrier overhanging the face of the bracket, a boss on the carrier, and a removable cutting blade on the Bange surrounding the boss.
12. In a shavin machine, a head, a bracket extending radial y from the head and having its vface disposed longitudinally of the head, a cuttin blade supported to shuttle over the face o the bracket, and guard members mounted on the sides of the bracket contiguous to the edges of the shuttle blade and curved inwardly with relation to the sidei of the bracket, there being openings between the ard members and the sides of the brac et for the passage of lather inwardly of t `from the head and having its face disposed longitudinally of the head, the face of the bracket having a longitudinal guide channel, a carrier mounted to reciprocate in the bracket and having a marginal extension overlying the bottom of the guide channel thereof, a shuttle blade mounted on the carrier and extending over the channel of the bracket, means in the head for imparting a shuttle motion to the carrier, a guard member overlyin the blade lon' itudinally between itsl e ges and guar members attached to the 'sides of the bracket and having outwardly directed teeth providing openings for the passage of lather to 'the sides of thebracket.
