COMPOSITE BRICK AND TILE WALL CONSTRUCTION.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM GusTAvus DEMAREST, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Metuchen, in the county 6 of Middlesex and State of-New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Composite Brick and Tile Wall Constructions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a composite brick and tile wall construction and is a division of my prior application filed September 2, 1920, Serial. No; 407,642, and patented August 15, 1922, Patent No. 1,426,048.
The object of the invention is to provide a composite brick and tile wall construction of this character in which the tile and the brick facings are so organized as to obtain a high degree of strength and as to provide continuous vertical air passages through the wall to serve to dissipate the moisture coming in through the wall and prevent it penetrating the wall and damaging the interior of the building, the tile being at the same time of such construction as to facilitate the assembly of the wall and to be itself susceptible of convenient and comparatively inexpensive manufacture. 7
Other objects and advantages of the invention reside in certain novel features of the construction, combination and arrangement of partsv which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, and in which:

Referring to the drawin s itwill be seen that the invention contemp ates a composite tile and brick wall construct-ion which includes a brick facing, designated generally at 1 and preferably comprising ordinary courses 2 of facing brick having at regular intervals, preferably at every six course, header courses 3. Courses of tile designated generally at 4 are provided and are so constructed and arranged as to form with the -sions 8 formedon the block 6 and preferbriok facing an organized'wall construction, the facing brick and the tile being bound together by mortar or the like, indicated at 5.
The courses of tile are made up of complementary blocks, designated at 6 and 7 these complementary blocks being arranged behind the ordinary courses 2 of brick. Certain of the courses of tile, preferably the courses made up of blocks 6, have the blocks which constitute them formed with reduced integral extensions 8. As shown in the drawings the blocks 6 and 7 are of identical construction except for the reduced extenably these tile blocks comprise shells 9 and vertical webs 10 so that the'tiles are of cellular construction. Obviously any number of vertical webs may be provided to form the desired number of the cells of the block. V The shells and webs define front and rear vertical openings, designated at 11 and 12 respectively and in the wall construction the rear vertical openings'12 are in direct and open communication and constitute continuous vertical air passages through the I wall.
The relatively small block portions or the reduced extensions .8 of the block 6 are of course formed integral with portions of the shells 9 and webs 10 of the blocks on which they are formed. As clearly shown in Figure 2, these reduced extensions are disposed behind and spaced from the rear ends of the bricks which -make up the header courses 3 and define with these bricks voids or air spaces 13, these voids or air spaces being in open and direct communication with the continuous air passages 12. In this manner not only is the continuous air space or passage through the wall provided but also the continuity of the mortar or binding material is broken and moisture 10 penetrating through the binding material will be conducted to the vertical air passages and will be dissipated therein. By making up the courses of the tile of complementary block portions the tile blocks are of 'a size 5 and weight susceptible of easy handling and of easy assembly in the wall construction.
While I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit 110 myself to the construction herein set forth as various changes in the, details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A compositebrick and tile Wall construction comprising, in combination with a brick facing having ordinary courses and header courses, a plurality of complementary courses of tile arranged behind each group of ordinary courses comprehended between having reduced extensions disposed behind said header courses, the tile and thereduced extensions having continuous vertical openings therein constituting suitable vertical air passages through. the Wall and serving to dissipate the moisture finding its way in through the Wall.
