. NELS H. JOHNSON, OF DAYTON, IOWA.
Hos nonnnn.
Application filed March 12, 1923. Serial No. 624,505.
. oil whom it may concern:
Be it known that Nuns H. JOHNSON, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Webster and State of Iowa, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hog Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The main purpose of my invention is the provision of a holder for hogs or other 0 animals that is a substantial improvement over similar devices with which I am now familiar, the invention being characterized by its simplicity of construction and effectiveness of operation.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in con-- nection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hog holder constructed in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a detail longitudinal cross sectional view thereof;
Figures 3 and 4c are transverse sectional views upon the lines 3-3 and t-4 respectively of Figure 2; and
Figure 5 is a perspective of the operating member of the hog holder.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 5 designated a relatively elongated open ended tube screw-threaded at its opposite ends as shown. Upon the front end of said tube 5 is a screw-threaded cap 6 formed with a central opening 7 together with a stud 8 upon the interior of the cap, this stud being in turn formed with a screw-threaded socket.
Upon the opposite end of the said tube 5 is a somewhat similar cap 9, this cap being formed with a pendant barrel 10 within which is a plunger 11, the same being forced normally outwardly of the barrel and into so the tube 5 through the instrumentality of an expansive spring 12, it being clearly noted that the lower end of this barrel is open and screw-threaded and has disposed thereon a screw-threaded cap 13.
Rectangularly movable within the tube 5 F1 is a flat-like rod let the upper edge thereof being toothed as at 15 for a portion of its length, this rod extending outwardly to a slot 16 within the said cap 9 and being formed upon its end with a handle 17.
The slot 16 within the cap 9 is of a greater width than the rod 14 permitting of the free sliding movement of the same therethrough. T he upper end of the plunger 11 is slotted as at 18 and engaging within this slot, is the said rod 14, it being clearly understood that the coil spring 12 forces the plunger 11 inwardly for consequently engaging the difierent teeth 15 of the rod 1 within the upper edge of the said slot 16 in the end cap 9.
Secured to the said stud 8 of the end cap 6 through the instrumentality of ascrew 19 is one end of a length of wire 20, the opposite end of this wire being connected as at 21 to the said rod 1 1.
In view of the above description it will at once be apparent that the rod 14 may be forced inwardly of the tube 5 by pressing downwardly and forwardly thereon which will consequently force the wire 20 downwardly of the tube for forming a loop. When it is desired to employ my tool for effectively holdin a hog or other animal the loop formed by t e wire is engaged preferably over the animals nose after which by retracting the rod 14 rearwardly the said l00p will be contracted for consequently effectively holding the said animal.
Although I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
An animal holding device comprising a tubular member having an opening in one end thereof, a toothed bar slidable through the opening of the tubular member, a flex:
ible element formed with a loop intermediate its ends and having one end attached to one end of the tubular member and its opposite end attached to the bar, a sleeve extending laterally from'the tubular meininto the tubular member, and having its inner end bifurcated and slidably embracing the bar and normally holding the latter in a, position where one of the teeth will engage one of the Walls of the opening.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
NELS 1-1. JOHNSON.
