C. J. AKESSON CHAIR DESK Filed Feb, ll 1920 v INVENToR. WA/afs J/ffsso/v BYdQgm/WMLW ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 25, 1923.r
UNITED STATES CHARLESKJ. KESSON, 0F SAN- DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
CHAIR DESK.
Application filed February 11, 1920. Serial No. 357,7i38.k
To all whom t may concer/a.:
Be 1t known that I, CHARLES J. AKEssoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at- San Bieg'on in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented a certain new "and useful Chair Desk, of which the following is aV specification.
My invention relates to a desk adapted to be supported on the arms of a chair for reading, writing and the like and the objects of my invention are: first, to provide a desk which may be readily positioned on the arms of a chair in front of the user for reading, writing and the like; second, to provide a desk of this class which is applicable for use in connection with the various makes of arm chairs; third, to provide a desk of this class which may be tilted to varying angles to suit; fourth, to provide a desk of this class which will facilitate the studyingof two or more books in conjunction where they pertain yto similar" subject matter; fifth, to provide a desk of this class which will support books, large magazines, journals and the like thus adding to the comfort in reading them; sixth, to provide a desk of this class which is applicable foruse for writing, drawing and the like as well as a book support andy Seventh, to provide a desk of this class which is simple and economi-cal of construction` durable, easy to adjust into varying positions relatively to the arms of the chair and making it applicable for use with varying shaped arms of chairs.
lilith these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my desk shown mounted in position on a chair ready for use and showing tilting positions by dotted lines; F ig, 2 is an enlarged detailed perspective view of the support for engaging the arm of the chair and showing the desk support and arm fragmentarily; Fig. 3 is a bottom view ofthe desk showing the chair arm engaging members fragmentarily to facilitate the illustration and showing by dotted lines varying positions of the shift'- able supports; Fig. 4 is an end view thereof; Fig. 5 is a. sectional view through 5 5 of Fig. 3 on an enlarged scale; Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing the meansof supporting the arm engaging member in a slightly modified form from thatof Figs. l to inclusive shown in connection with an upholstered chair arm and Fig. 7 is a fragmentary sectional view on the line 7-7 of Fig. r6. f
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings.
The table member 1, shiftable supports 2, cleats 3, clamp bolts a, chair arm engaging members 5, clamp bolts 6, and adjustable lug 7 constitute the principal parts and portions of my chair desk in its preferred form.
The table member l which is preferably a rectangularly shapedy member is slightly wider than the arms of the cha-ir but may be any suitable shape. or size and it is preferably provided along its lower edge with a ledge 1a to prevent articles'placed thereon from slipping off and to hold a book or other article in position.
Secured on the bottom side of this table member l at its opposite ends are av pair of cleats 3 provided with elongated holes 3 therein and they are spaced apart from the table l except at the ends where they are secured. Mounted behind these cleats 3 are the ends of the shiftable supports 2,
the ends of which are provided with holes adapted for the bolts 4 to fit therein and their other ends are provided with elongated holes Qa and adapted for the bolts 4. These bolts i are provided with nuts a thereon, preferably knurled to facilitate their being turned by hand thus providing for shifting the supports 2 so that they may be spread further apart or closer together or may be shifted so that they are on varying angles as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 8 to suit varying angled chair arms. These shiftable supports 2 are provided with eX- tended portions at their middle provided with a hole adapted for the bolt 6 and pivotally mounted on this bolt 6 is the chair arm engaging member 5 which is also provided with an extended portion t'L and these members 5k and 2 are held in certain relative positions to each other by frictional contact by means of the bolt 6 which is provided with a knurled nut 6a thereon to facilitate Vits beingturned by hand. Ad-
arms.
it will be noted that the chair arm engaging surface of the member 5 is provided with a felt or rubber surface topi-'event marring thechalir'A finish and that the inner surface of the lug 7 is also provided with such` surface. Y j
In. the modified form of.V construction shownV in Figs. 6' and a' Vinstead of the lug 7 there is provided a bifurcated member S on which is pivotally mounted a curved latch member 9 which is provided with a torsion sprino` 10 tending to hold it inwardly against the chair arm at all times. This latch isprovided with a knob 9 to be gripped by the hand to facilitate the i'emovingA of the desk from. the chair.
Though have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions l do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement but desire' to include in the purview of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
lt is yobvious that with this construction there is provided Va desk which may be used for reading, writing and so forth, which may be readily `position-ed on the arms of a chair and readily removed therefrom, which is adjustable torvarying angles for providing"V the proper tilt to the table portion.
That it is supported in such a manner that the supports may be shiftedl inwardly or outwardly for Varying width chair arms and may be shifted to varying angles for application to varying angled chair arms,
l-lavlng thus Vdescribed my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
chairdesk, including supporting members resting' longitudinally a'long the upper side of both of the chair arms, shiftable lugs mounted on saidV supporting members, vertically adjustable therewith, forming varying grooves between said supporting members and a portion lof the lugs, adapt-ed to i-ecei-v'ey the edges of the chair arms, other supports pivotally mounted.V on and frictionally secu-red to said supports, andata-ble member shiftalbly mounted on ,said support.
2. A chair desk, including artable member, means for supporting. said table member oni a chair' arms, including a pair of spaced apart supporting' members secured.
near each endof saidv table member, other supporting members' sl'iiftable sidewise and at varying angles to said first mentioned supporting' members, and other supporting members pivotallyr mounted thereon and frictionall-y secured thereto, adapted to engage the chair arms' and be supported thereon. Y
3f, A chair desk, including a table niem-A ber', means for supporting saiid table menib'er on af chair arms', including. a pair of spaced apart supporting members secured near each end of said table member, other supporting members shiftaible sidewise and at varying angles to said first mentioned supporting members, other supporting members pivotally mounted thereon and frictionally se'curedthereto, adapted to engage the chair arms and be supported thereon, and lng meansadjustab'ly` mounted on said last mentioned supports, forming Vgrooves adapted tol receive the edges of the chair arms, whereby said table is supported on said chair arms and adapted to be adjusted side'- wise', forwardly and backwardly and on any angle relatively to the chair arms.
ln testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at San Diego', California, thisth day of February, 1920.
CHARLES J. moisson.
