MAURICE J'. NOONAN, 0F EAST PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
ANTI-SPARROW-ROOSTING DEVICE.
Application led February 15, 1923. Serial No. 619,236.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Mannion J. NooNAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Anti-Sparrow-Boosting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in anti-Sparrow roosting devices, and has for its object to provide simple and effective devices of this character, preferably formed of wire, having a front bar set on an incline with its ends formed into spurs to be driven into the side of a house over a shutter fastener, to prevent sparrows from roosting on the fastener.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
ln the acompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section showing my improved guard as mounted on a house above the shutter fastener.
Figure 2 is an edge view of a guard member illustrating the laterally offset lower end of the guard.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of my improved guard showing the inclined front bar as bent from the inclined to the vertical at its uper end and the inwardly-extending lower bar as laterally offset at its inner end and its extremity turned inwardly to form a spur adapted to be driven into the side of a building.
It is found in practice in the construction of my improved device to so shape the ends of the guard that the spurs formed thereon will set at substantially a right angle to the side of a house into which they are adapted to be driven, and the following is a detailed description of one means by which this result may be readily accomplished With reference to the drawings, 10 designates a shutter fastener which is secured to the side of a house 11 and on which birds have a tendency to roost and disfigure the side of the building. To prevent which, I have provided a guard which is preferably formed of wire the same comprising a front bar 12 the major portion of which is set on an incline, the upper portion of this bar being straightened as at 13 for a short distance to lie flat against the side of a house and the extremity of this upper portion is sharpened and turned inwardly at a right angle as at 11i to form a spur adapted to be driven into the side of a building. The lower end of this inclined bar is supported by an inwardly extending bar or arm 15 which is also preferably set on a slight upwardly inclined angle relative to the side of the buildand the inner end of this inwardly-extending bar is laterally offset as at 16 to rest against the side of a house and its extremity is sharpened and turned substantially at a right angle inwardly as at 18 forming a spur adapted to be driven into the ends of the house.
By forming this laterally offset portion a hammer may be employed to strike directly against the outer end of the spur to readily drive the same into the side of the house also by straightening the portion at the upper end 13 of this iron bar to set at substantially a right angle to the side of the building to lie Hat thereagainst, the driving hammer may also be caused to strike squarely against the outer end of the spur to more effectually drive it into the side of the building, which would not be the case if the whole front bar were set on an incline.
My improved guard member is extremely simple and practical in construct-ion and effective in its operation and by its construction its attaching spurs may be readily driven into the side of a building to securely mount the same directly over the shutter fastener and so eflectually prevent roosting of birds on the fastener.
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being dened and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. An antisparrow roosting device comprising a guard having a front bar set on an incline, its upper extremity being turned inwardly to form an attaching spur, a lower inwardly-extending bar having its inner H05 portion offset laterally to lie against the support and its extremity lbeing turned inturned inwardly to form an attaching spur, Wardly to provide an attaching spur. a lower inwardly extending bar having its 2. An antisparrow roosting device cominner portion offset laterally to `lie against 10 prisinof a gua-rd having a front bar set on the Support and its extremity being turned 5 an incline, its upper portion being straightinwardly to provide an attaching spur.
ened for a short distance to lie flat against In testimony whereof I aix my signature. the side of the house, its extremity being MAURICE J. NOONAN.
