EDWARD D. WINTERSTEEN, F SCHENECTADY, `NEW YORK.
FoUN'rAIN PEN..
'Appncauon'lmed may 1s,
To all fugvhom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD D. WINTER- STEEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, in the county of Sche- State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain Pens, of which the following is a 4 specification.'
' vice embodying The present invention comprises a new fountain pen construction whereby the cap of the pen may be securely locked upon the barrel without any attention or thought by the user other than th'e usual and habitual act of replacing the ca upon the barrel.
It is desirable that t e cap and barrel of a fountain pen carried in a pocket or bag should be protected from injury resulting from accidentally unscrewing7 case of chatelaine fountain pens, which are carried on a chain or cord, unscrewing of the cap and barrel is likely to result in loss of the barrel.
In accordance with my invention I have provided an inconspicuous locking device which prevents unintentional disengagement of the cap from the barrel.l The locking demy invention is automatically set in a lockingposition by the user when the cap is placed in closed position and is released by the pressure ofthe fingers when holding the pen to unscrew the cap. f
The novel features of my invention will be set forth with greater particularity in the appended claims.
The accompanying drawings illustrate in Fig. 1 partly in longitudinal section, a pen embodying my invention with the parts disengaged; Fi 2 Ysimilarly illustrates the same parts w en in'engagement, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross-section of the pen on the lines 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The fountain pen shown in Fig. 1 comprises the usual elongated barrel 1 provided at one end with a pen 2, communicating with an ink reservoir 3 through a feeding Adevice 4. As the pen and feeding device form no part of my present invention they require no further description. The cap 5' iits over the pen 2, and is intended to be held in this position, when the pen is not in use by the engagement of the screw threads 6 upon the interior` surface of the end of the cap with the threads .7 upon the exterior surface of the barrel. The cap 5 is usually and in the 1923. -seriai No. 639,949.
also provided with a clip or holder 8 which engages with the pocket of the user, or is held by a ring 9 (indicated in Fig. 1 by dotted lines) through which a chain 0r cord may be passed.
No matter whether a pocket clip ora ring holder is used, the barrel of thepen in either case is suspended from the cap and hence the ordinary motion of the body of the wearer is apt to cause the barrel to become unscrewed. When the pen is carried in the pocket this may damage the pen point and cause soiling of the pocket with ink and when the pen is suspended by a chain or cord attached to the cap, the unscrewing of the cap is apt to cause a loss of the barrel.
In accordance with m linvention disenagement of the cap and arrel is prevented y the engagement of -a pawl, constituted by a spring blade 10 carried by the barrel, with the ratchet teeth 11 on the inner surface of the mouth of the cap. These teeth may be molded directly in the cap which may con sist of hard rubber, bakelite or other suitable material, or the toothed end of the cap mag consist of metal.
s best shown in Fig. 3, the ratchet teeth barrel but prevents unscrewing of the barrel. The thin, narrow, resilient blade which is mounted at one end by rivets 12 upon the barrel 1 has a slight spring outwardly so as to stay normally in engagement with the ratchet teeth but permitting it to be depressed by the lingers out of engagement with the ratchet teeth ,when the cup is to be unscrewed.
Although I have described and claimed my invention with particular reference to fountain pen construction, it is obvious that the benefits of my invention are not necessarily confined to a pen. Other instruments may be similarly constructed.
What I claim as new and desire to secure `by Letters Patent of the United States, is
Q remue? members permitting said cap to be screwed mounted upon said barrel so as to' engage upon said barrel but resisting unserewing with said ratchet teeth, said teeth being therefrom. shaped to permit Said cap to be screwed 3. A fountain pen comprising a barrel upon said barrel but resisting unsorewing 5 having an external threaded portion, a cap and a mounting for said pawl permitting R5 having an internal threaded portion which release thereof by pressure. maybe screwed into engagement with the 1n Witness whereof, I have hereunto set external threaded portion, of saidv barrel, my hand this lth day of May, 1923. ratchet teeth upon the ,interior surface of 10 said cap and a pawl of resilient material EDWARD D. `WINTERSTEEN.-
