FONDEN@ TABLE.
application and .augure a7, naar. serai no. etarra To all whom t may concern.
- Be it known that I, Lome FERGUSON, a citizen of .the United States, and resident of the borou h of Manhattan, in the city t and State of ew York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Tables,
of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel brace construction for each leg of a to folding table whereby a device is provided which serves bothas a stop for preventing the unfolding of the leg beyond its normal unfolded position, and also as a convenient handle for releasing the brace when it is deit sired to fold the leg. t
improvement is shown as ap lied to that. type of folding Atable in which the swinging leg brace is pivoted to the table and 1s s idably connected to the leg through so a pivoted keeper.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawin g in which,
ig. 1 represents aninverted plan view of a the table with the legs folded.
Fig. 2 re resents a detail side elevation of the table with the legs in their unfolded position.
Fig. 3 represents a detail side view on an enlarged scale, showing the parts at the connection between the brace and leg.
lig. 4l represents asimilar view with the keeper and lock pin shown in section.
Fig. 5 represents a detail view partly in side elevation and partly in section, showi ing the parts at the pivotal connections of the swinging brace and leg to the table.
Fig, 6 represents a detail inverted plan view of the table with one of the legs in its unfolded position.
Fig. 7 represents a detail view taken at right angles to Fig. 3.
'lihe encircling frame of the table is denoted by l and the folding legs by 2. ln the present instance each of these folding legs is shown as provided with a laterally ex pivotally secured between a' tended hub 84 block d 'and the table frame 1. y
A rigid diagonal brace 5 leads from the leg 2 to the hub 3. A swinging brace is provided with .a long arm 6 and a short arm 7, whichbrace is pivoted to the frame at 8.
The long arm 6 of this swinging brace is provided near its end with 'a ,notch 9 arranged to enga e a lock in 10 ro'ectin from the foldingg leg 2. p 9 p J :g
A: keepenll 1s mounted on the lock pin 10 1n position to guide and hold the long arm 6 of the swinging brace in its" position on the leg. Y
A stoppin 12 is secured to the frame in position to engage the shortvarm Z of the Swingin brace as the leg nears the limit of itsA unfo ded position, to force the long arm against the lock pin 10 so as to cause it to t5 snap into the notch 9 as the leg reaches the limit of its unfolding movement. v
To maintain the leg in its folded positionL the long arm 6 of the swinging brace has a tendency to yield inwardly beyond the leg and therebyA create a frictional engagement which will tend to keep the leg in its folded position.
To prevent the swinging brace from being pulled through the keeper and to prevent the leg from being swung toward the normal limit of its unfolded position, l provide the brace with a stop device, which device also serves as a handle for the ready manipulation of the brace to release it from the leg when it is desired to fold the leg.
l have shown in the present instance this combined stop and handle as being provided for by twisting the free end or the brace as shown at 13, thus forming a shoulder 1d e5 whichwill prevent the brace from being drawn through the keeper.
lt is evident that various changes may be made in this combined stop and handle without departing from the spirit and scope of a my invention; hence l do not wish to be limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, but A What l claim is 1. lin a table, a folding leg, and a swinging brace connected at one end thereof to said table, said brace being of dat material slidably connected to the le the free end of the brace being twisted to orm a shoulder which abuts against the connection between the leg and brace to prevent the leg from being swung beyond the normal limit of its unfolded position.
2. In a table, a folding leg, and a swingin brace connected at one end thereoia to said table, said brace being of dat material slidably connected to the l the free end of the brace being twisted to crm a shoulder which abuts against the connection between the leg and brace to prevent the leg from being swung be ond the normal limit of lts unfolded position, the brace beyond the shoulder being developed into a handleto permit the ready manlpulation of the brace for releasin it from the leg when it is desired to fol the le 3. In a table, a folding leg, a keeper thereon, a lock in connected with said leg, and a swinging race of fiat material secured at one end thereof to the table and slidable in the keeper and having a notch for coaction with the lock pin to hold the'leg in its unfolded position, the free end of said brace being twisted to form a shoulder which abuts against the keeper to'prevent the leg from being swung beyond the normal limit of its unfolded position. v
4. In a table, a folding leg, a keeper thereon, a lock pin connected with saidleg yand a swinging brace of flat material connected at one^ end with said table and slidable in lthe keeper, said brace having a notch for coaction with the lock pin to hold the leg in its unfolded position, the free end4 of said brace being twisted to form a shoulder which abuts against the keeper to prevent the leg from being swung beyond the normal limit of its unfolded position, the brace beyond the shoulder being developed into al handle to permit the ready manipulation of the brace for releasing it from the lock pin when it is desired to fold the leg.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name this 12th day of August 1921.
LOUIS FERGUSON.
