A. SPILMAN ABDOMINAL BAND Filgd July 7 1922 INVENTOR. SP/L MA /v.
A TTORNE Y.
Patented Dec. E8, 1923.
UNE'ITE ANNA SPILMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ABDOMINAL BAND.
Application filed July 7, 1922. Serial No. 573,31
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ANNA SPILMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Yorlg'in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Abdominal Bands, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to abdominal supports or bands and more particularly to a novel and improved design of wearing apparel to take the place of the commontype of corset having stiffening members therein such as corset steels, etc., and one which can be comfortably worn without bodily injury and without sacrificing personal appearance.
It is well known that physical weakness due to abdominal operations is aggravated and continued over a long duration of time by reason of improper wear of certain apparel, particularly corsets, and manypeople inclined to be stout, become permanently injured by reason of tight lacing which has the tendency to force the abdominal organs downward instead of upward. The abdominal muscles become cramped causing pain and the internal organs are consequently affected preventing their proper functioning by reason of the unnatural strain imposed as well as the retardation of the proper blood circulation incident to incorrect wearing apparel.
The primary object of my invention therefore is to provide an abdominal band or support which takes the place of a corset and at the same time assists in proper supporting the lower walls of the abdomen in the natural manner without injuring the internal organs and at the same time aifording comfort without sacrificing appearance.
Another and equally important object of my invention is the provision of an abdominal support or band of the character above set forth which is practical, highly efficient, neat in appearance and design, comfortable when worn and otherwise capable of being manufactured at a comparatively low cost whereby its commercial possibilities are greatly enhanced.
I attain the above objects and others by the preferred form of the invention exemplitied in the accompanying drawing, where- 1111- Fig. 1 is a rear view of the band.
Fig. 2 is a front view thereof:
Fig. 3 is a plan partly in section.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts on the drawing, 5 designates the short side and 6 the longer overlapping side of the band which is of substantial width, the short side having a row of buttons 7 sewed to the outer edge and the longer side 6 having a buttonhole strip 8 whereby the band may be secured as is well understood.
The inner, free ends of the short and longer side of the band are sewed or fastened in any well known manner to a vertical strip or insert 9 extending from the top 10 to the bottom 11 to allow for sufficient adjust ment, the said strip or insert being disposed on the inner side of the band as shown by Fig. 1 of the drawing. A row of eyelets 12 and lacing 13 passing therethrough is provided which permits the band to be properly adjusted to the size and comfort of the individual.
In order to give suiiicient stiffness to the back or" the band and on the opposite side of the strip or insert, 1 have provided pockets on each side of the. row of eyelets to permit of the insertion of a pair of fleXible stays whereby the same may be removed when it is desired to launder the device.
Reference being had to Figures 1 and 3 of the drawing, it will be seen that I have provided an inner abdominal supporting belt 14, the ends of which are preferably sewed Ol' stitched along the seems joining the insert 9 with the parts 5 and 6, said belt of course being of substantial width and intermediate the top and bottom edges 10, 11 and in addition being provided with eyelets and buttons 15. It will thus be seen that when the belt is properly fastened that it will have the tendency to draw up and support the lower abdominal, muscles and with perfect comfort to the individual since the proper adjustment can be made by drawing in the laces and the insert- Or letting the same out to suit the person.
The bottom edge 11 of the support or band is also cut away to provide tabs 15. 16, 17 and 18 each of which have a buttonhole to receive the removable garter 20 for attachment to the stockings as is well understood. In order to properly position the supporting belt 14, I have also provided a pair of gar: ters 14:, attached adjacent the bottom thereof and in proximitly to the front, free ends which are fastened, so that when the garters are secured to the stocking, they will counteract the tendency of the band to move upwardly. The garters may he of course be removed when it is desired towas-h the garment and subsequently be replaced. A pocket 22 formed with a flap 23 is attached in any well known manner to the longer side 6 and constitutes a secret valuable receiving depository instead of carrying articles of value such as jewelry, in the stocking.
While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of pa-rticulai ity, I realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made. I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise alterating the arrangement o1 the correlated parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subject matter being claimed.
Having shown and described-my invention what I now claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent of the United States Mn aac omina, supper comprising mo substantially wide sections ot-uneqnal length havino' fastenin means at their free ends connected sections, said band being, attaehable to the inner side of the connected ends of the sections and intermediate the top and bottom thereof, said band being adjustable with the strip when the lacing is drawn taut or loosened.
Intestimony whereof I my signature.
