Be it known that I, RUDoLrv J. -WEINAGHT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of New York, borough of Mair hattan, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Index File, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an index file and aims to provide certain new and useful improvements in connection with a device of this character, as heretofore placed upon the market.

More particularly my present invention relates to the construction of an index file particularly adapted for use, such as would be suitable for salesmen, etc.

An object of my invention is the constructi on of a device of the character stated which shallbe constructed of a number of sheets adapted toreceive data, said sheets being preferably detachably secured to each other, and being capable of manipulation in such a manner as to permit the card or sheet which is to be used at any particular time appearing paramount above those sheets or cards with which it is associated.

A further object of invention isthe construction of an index file which shall embody the foregoing qualities, and which may alsobe placed upon the market at a nominal figure. i 7

Further objects of my invention will appear in the annexed specification, taken in sheets connectedtog'ether connection with the drawings, which present practical adaptations of the same, and in which; V

longitudinal movement of a card with respect to the one engaged therewith may be accomplished, primarily by virtue of the fact that a sliding contact is established between the outer edge of the first one card and certain of the tabs 18, of the adjoining card, while the slot 19 being larger than the tab 18 with which it cooperates, will also permit of a limited sliding movement of one card with respect to the adjoining card.

In the form illustrated in Figures 3 and 4 it will be seen that a longitudinal movement of one card with respect to the second is prevented but a sidewise movement of such cards may be accomplished. Thus the leaf 15 is bent as in Figures 1 and 2, but theminor portion of the leaf is formed with recesses 20 in its upper and lower edges, and at points adjacent the line of bending 16, and also tongues 21 are formed on these edges and adjacent the outer ends of the same. The second card of the leaf has slots 22 cut in it, such slots being of a width sufficient to accommodate the tongues 21, and also permitting of a sliding" of these tongues longitudinally of the slot as in Figure 3. The corners of the recessed portions 20 of one card co-operate with arcuate slots 23 formed in the corresponding corners of the next djacent cards, these slots, as in the instance of the slots 22 being also of sufficient length to not alone accommodate the corners of the cards, but also to permit of a sliding of these corners within the slots. Thus again in this form, the cards are retained to provide a file unit, but one or all of the cards may be moved to a which they project beyond the next adjacent card so as to render at least the captions visible.

In Figures 5 and 6 the leaf 15 is bent, and sub-divided into a larger and smaller card, asin the forms illustrated in the preceding figures, but it will be noted that insteadof the construction shownin Figures 3 and 4: the smaller card in this case is formed with recesses 24 and 25 in each of its upper and lower edges, while the larger card has slots 26 cut adjacent its corners, each of said slots being arranged at an angle to the side edges of'the card, and in opposed relationships to each other, and also being of sufficient width to slidably accommodate the corners provided by the recesses 24 and 25. Thus in this type of card, asidewise movement of one card with respect to its next adjacent card. is permitted and the slots 26 will lock the whole in applied position although this sliding permitted. s

Finally'in the form illustrated in Figures 10 and 11, it will be seen that the leaf 15 is again subdivided into cards by bending along the line 16 as in the previous forms However, in this form it will be movement is point at noted that one of the cards has tabs 27 formed adjacent its end edges, and that the second card is formed with projecting portions 28 extending from its end edges, said projecting portions being of a width less than the distance existing between the tabs 27.

Thus as in Figure 10 the cards of adjacent leaves may readily be associated with each other by simply bringing the end edges of the smaller card to a point at which the tabs 27 of an adjacent card will overlap the same, and be in slidable engagement therewith, a limited sliding movement of one card with respect to the other being permitted by virtue of the fact that the projecting portion 28 is of a width slightly less than the distance between the tabs 27 In Figures 7, 8 and 9, a file unit has been shown illustrating the association of leaves of the type illustrated in Figures 10 and 11. It will be seen in figure 7 that one card has been pulled to a point at which its caption edge projects well above the edges of the other cards so that this card is rendered instantly available, while in Figures 8 and 9 a series of cards have been moved with respect to each other to render all of their captions visible above one another. It will be noted that the uppermost leaf 15 of Figs. 7, 8 and 9 is shown as conveniently carrying at its bottom a downwardly projecting eye as illustrated, which may be adhesively or otherwise secured to the front low the bottom edge of the uppermost leaf.

From the foregoing it will be seen that all of the objects set forth in the preamble of this specification have been accomplished,

and it will be appreciated that numerous modifications of structure might readily be resorted to without in the least departing from the scope of my claims; which 'are- 1. An index file including a plurality of leaves each composed of a plurality of cards ofrdifferent outline each leaf having a score-line defining a line of fold between the two cards whereby the card of smaller outline may be folded over the card of larger outline, and means for detachably slidingly connecting a card of smaller ou line of one leaf to a card of larger outline of another leaf, said means including a plurality of slots'in the leaf, said slots incidentally providing edge portions on the" leaf auxiliary to the perimetraledge portions of the leaf, said means further including a plurality of tabs integrally car ried by the leaf, said slots and tabs being so relatively shaped and disposed that each of said tabs of one leaf may be disposed to slidingly coact With one of the edge portions of the adjoining leaf.

2. An index file including a plurality of leaves each composed of a plurality of cards of different outline, a plurality of tabs forming parts of one of said cards of each leaf, one of said tabs on a card being adapted to slidably engage one edge of another card of the next adjacent leaf, said latter card being formed with a slot, one of said 15 tabs being adapted to extend into said slot.

An index file including a plurality of leaves each composed of a plurality of cards of different outline, a plurality of tabs forming parts of one of said cards of each 20 leaf, one of said tabs on a card being adapted to slidably engage one edge of another card of the next adjacent leaf, said latter card being formed With a slot, one of said tabs being adapted to extend into said 25 slot, said slot being of a greater length than the Width of said ta'b. v
