Description

i. E. CARLSON FOOT, REST Filed Feb. 5. 1923 INVENTOR. 4'
ldda t. W560 Patented Dec. 4, 1923.
UNITE IDDO E. cennson, or nnxnnn-ninnrann;
rarer roo'r nn'srx Application filed February 3, 1923'. Serial No. 616,800.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IDDo E. CARLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkhart, in the county of Elkhart and Stateof Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot Rests, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to foot rests, designed primarily for use in connection with the accelerators of motor vehicles, but it is to be understood that the foot rest, in accordance with this invention, can be employed in connection with any purposes wherein it is found applicable, and the invention has for its object to provide in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a foot rest for supporting, as well as positioning, the foot of the operator at an angle at all times over the accelerator thereby providing for the convenient operation of the accelerator when desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a
foot rest having means whereby it can be conveniently adjusted for supporting andproperly positioning feet of different sizes with respect to the accelerator of the motor vehicle so that the accelerator can be conveniently operated when desired. 1
Further objects of the invention are to provide a foot rest for the purpose set forth which is simple in its construction, strong, durable, compact, adjustable, efficient in its use, providing for the convenient operation of an accelerator of a motor vehicle, readily set up with respect to the accelerator, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture;
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shownan embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to, which fallwithin the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views 1 Figure 1 is a side'elevation illustratin the foot board of a motor vehicle, as well as the accelerator, and further showing the adaptation of a foot rest in accordance with this invention with respect to the accelerator.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of v the foot rest.
Fig. 3 isa top plan view of the foot rest, with the holding member removed. v
Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the holding member. 1
Fig.5 is a perspective view of the locking element.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 denotes the body portion of a vehicle, 2 the foot board, and 3 the accelerator which extends through the foot board 2. A foot rest, inaccordance with this invention, comprisesa base member formed from-a metallic plate-which-is rectangular in contour and'consistsof a lower end portion 4, an intermediate portion 5, and an upper end portion 6. The lower end portion 4 is provided with a plurality of openings 7, for thepassage of'holdfast devices 8, to secure the base member to the foot board 2 of the vehicle; The intermediate portion 5 extends at an upward inclination with respect to the lower end portion 4, and is'provided with aseries of transversely. extending rectangular slots 9. The forward terminal portionof the intermediate portion 5 is bent downwardly at an inclination, as .at 10, and terminates in the upper end portion 6, the latter extending in a plane parallel to the plane of the intermediate portion 5.:
Adjustably mounted. on the intermediate portion 5, of the base member, is a holding member consisting of a rectangular plate 11, which is mountedon the intermediate portion 5, and has its forward end terminating in a dependingangle shaped flange 12, and which is so arranged as 'to-extendthrough a slot 9 and overlap the lower face of the intermediate portion 5, whereby the plate 11 is connected to the intermediate portion 5, and prevented from rearward movement with respect thereto. The rear of the plate 11, is formed with a vertically disposed andrearwardly inclinedextension 13 which provides the back of the holding member, and said extension 13 has formed integral therewith a pair of oppositely extending and forwardly projecting curved arms 14, 15.
The holding member issecured to the in termediateportion 5 of the base member, through the medium of a locking element consisting of a heel plate 16, having a rearwardly dis osed flange 17 which extends through a s 0t 9 and is arranged in abutting engagement with respect to the flange 12, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and when the looking element is positioned in such manner, the holding member will be prevented from shifting forwardly or rearwardly on the base member, under such conditions, the holding member is detachably connected to the base member.
The slots 9 providefor the'adjustably poi:
i an inclination owing toth'e position of the foot restwith respect to the accelerator 3, when the operators footismounted in the foot rest,-- it will'be supported at an inclina tion and extend overthe accelerator whereby the latter can be" conveniently operated when occasionsorequires-1 The base member is constructed of metallic materi al of the necessary rigidity to prevent the accidental bending downwardly of the intermediate portion the pressure of the foot" of the operator. As the locking ele mentis detachably mounted in the base member, and that the holding member is also detachably mountedin 'the'base member,
7 thesaid locking member and holding member can be conveniently shifted, when occasion so requires, to provide for different sizes of feet. The heel of the" footof the: operator normally resting onzthe'lockin'g element and also the plate 11, will tend to'" retain the holdingmember, as wellas the locking meme her in position.
From the "foregoing description, taken" in connection with the accompanying drawings, a foot rest is set up'which will not only supportthe' foot of the operator, but" will permanently position the foot ot the operator at an angle at all times over thefacoelerator, and under such conditionsthelatte-r can be conveniently operated, when occasion sore quires, and although the'dr awings illustrate the preferred embodiment of the invention, yet it is to be understood that changes in the details and construction can be had; without departing from'the spirit of the invention as: claimed.
What- I claim is=:
1.- A foot rest comprising a base member formed of-- an intermediate portion andupdisposed at an upward inclinationwith respect tothe lower end portion, a holding member connected tosaid intermediate portion, and a locking element engaged in said intermediate portlon and cooperating with said holdi-ngmember, said intermediateportionhaving means to provide fertile-adjustably connecting of said holding. member and locking. element therewith;
3. A foot restcomprising a base member having an upwardly inclined p'ortio rr, a flanged holding memberadjustablymou'nted in'the'inclined portion of said basemember, and a flanged locking: element mounted in the inclined portion of the base memlier and cooperating with said holdingimemb'er.
4. A foot rest comprising a basemember having an upwardly inclined portion; a flanged holding member adj ustably'moun'ted in theinclined portion of said basemember, and a flanged locking element mounted in the inclined portion of the base'memberand cooperating with said holding member, said holding member including a pair of forwardly projecting and oppositely disposed curved arms.
5. A- foot rest comprising a? base member having an upwardly inclined slotted portion, aholding member detachablymounted upon and overlapping said inclined: portion, and a-locking element mountednupon and extending through said inclined portion" and abutting against said: holdingmember.
6. Afoot rest comprising a base member having an upwardly inclined slotted portion', a holding'member detachablymounted upon and overlapping said inclined portion, and --a locking element mounted upon and extending through said inclined portion 1 and abutting against saidholding member, said holding member including an upwardly disposed and rearwardly: inclined extension provided with a pair of forwardly projecting curved arms.
n testimony whereof, I afiix' my signature hereto. I-DDQ Ea GA'RLSGN.
