UNITED STATES 1,47 ,332 PATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT D. FLEMING AND LEO F. MATTHEWS, OF NEW KENSINGTON, AND EDGAR C.
' FLEMING, OF RENFREW, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED TOBACCO CONTAINER AND MATCH RECEPTACLE.
Application filed March 13, 1922. Serial No. 543,499.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Haenn'r D. FLEMING, Lao F. MA'I'IHEWS, and EDGAR C. FLEMING, citizens of the United States, residing at New Kensington, Westmoreland County, Penns lvania; New Kensington, Westmoreland ounty, Pennsylvania; and Renfrew, Butler Count Pennsylvania, respectively, have inven'te certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Tobacco Containers and Match Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tobacco users appliances and the primary object of the invention is to provide a combined match receptacle and tobacco can or container so that the two articles can be dispensed as one and so that the matches will always be in a handy place for use. p
A further object of the invention is the provision of a match receptacle combined with a tobacco can havin novel means for removably holding matc es of the strip type, that is, paper matches which have their bases integrally connected together, in place therein, so that when the matches are used up, the connecting base of the same can be removed and a new strip of matches inserted in place in lieu thereof.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a combined tobacco can and match receptacle connected together in any desired manner, the match receptacle being preferably made from stamped metal and embodying a rear su porting wall, integral side walls, a hin ed f ront wall for covering the strip of mate es, and a resilient top wall integrally connected with the rear supporting wall, the top wall being so formed as to form means for holding the hinged front wall in its closed position, and means for holding the strip of matches removably in place.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which drawings:
Flgure 1 is a detail perspective view of the combined match container and match box, the cover for the match box being shown in its open position.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary vertical section through the improved match box and tobacco container, showing the front wall of the match box in its closed position.
Figure 3 is a similar view showing the front wall of the match box in its open position and the strip of matches removed from the box.
Figure at is an enlarged fragmentary horizontal section through the improved match box and tobacco container.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A indicates the'tobacco container; and B, the improved match box or receptacle.
The tobacco container A can be of the ordinary t pe, now used in vending tobacco, and as s own consists of an elongated rectangular body 5 having one end closed by. a hinged lid 6. The front wall 7 of the body 5 is adapted to support the match box B, which can be welded, soldered or otherwise secured thereto. It is to be, of course, understood, that the match box B can be secured in place, in any preferred manner onthe tobacco container and at any preferred point, such as the rear wall thereof.
The match box B is of novel construction, and is particularly adapted to removably support matches of the strip type, that is, matches constructed of paper and integrally connected togetherat their bases. In the drawings, the match strip is indicated by the reference character C and includes the integral base strip 8 and the match sticks 9.
The match box or receptacle B includes a rear connecting wall 10, which as stated, can be secured in any referred manner to the tobacco container and the lower edge of this wall 10 is preferably bent outwardly as at 11 and provided with a hinge barrel 12. The vertical side edges-of the rear wall 10 are bent forwardly in parallel relation to provide side walls 13 as clearly shown in the drawings. It is also preferred that the upper edge of the rear wall 10 be bent to provide the upper wall 14. The upper wall 14 is of novel construction and forms an important part of the invention and will be later described in detail.
The match box B is provided with a front wall 15, which is adapted to lie in spaced parallel relation to the rear wall 10. The lower edge of the front wall 15 is bent inwardly as at 16 and provided with a companion hinge barrel 17 for the hinged barrel 12 carried by the rear wall and these barrels are adapted to receive a bin e pin or pintle 18. As clearly shown in igure 4 of the drawings, the front' wall is adapted to lie between the side walls 13 and is arranged to snap under the resilient top wall 14 which will now he described.
The top wall 14 at its point of connection with the rear wall 10 is bent into a suhstantially inverted U-s-haped form to provide a resilient flange 19, which-is ada ted lid v ing movement.
to frictionally engage the hose strip 8 oi the match strip C, in order to removahly hold the match stri C in position. lt is obvious that hy grasping the forward edge oi? the top wall It, that the same can he flexed in order to move the flange 19 from out of en gagement with the base strip 8 to permit a new strip of matches to he inserted irr-the match her The extreme forward edge of the top wall 14; is hent to form a head 20, which is adapted to receive the upper edge oil the front wall 15 hold the same in its closed position against accidental openlt can he seen that when it is desired to open the front wall 15 it is merelv necessary to slightly flex the top wall it, This is not necessary, however, as the :hront wall can he simply given a sharp pull forward which will automatically lien the top wall 141-. In order to facilitate the open mg movement of the front wall 15, a struck out lug 21 can he formed in the front wall and thus the lug constitutes linger piece.
Thus it can he seen that hy grasping the finger piece or the lug 21, the front wMl can he readil swung open,
From the oregoing description, it can he seen that a comhined tobacco container and match hon has heen provided of simple and durable construction, which will form a compact unitary article and in which the matches are so held that the so will he in a convenient place at all timeslor ready thereof embodying a rear supporting wall side walls, a resilient top wall, and a hinge front wall, the resilient top wall being adapted to hold the front wall against opening movement and to hold a strip of matches in position against accidental removal.
2. In a tobacco users appliance, a tobacco hon formed of sheet metal including a rear wall, a front wall hingedly connected to the rear wall, side walls, and a resilient top wall arranged to engage the upper edge of the front wall to hold the same in closed position against accidental opening movement, and a resilient flange formed on the top wall for trictionally engaging a strip oil matches.
3. In a tohmco users appliance, a match hex formed of resilient sheet metal includ ing a rear wall, side walls formed on the side edges of the rear wall, a front wall, the low= er edges of the front and rear walls heing provided with companion hinged harrels, a pintle extending throu h the barrels, a resilient top wall formed on the rear wall, head, formed on the front edge of the top wall for receiving the hinged front wall, and a resilient clip formed on the top wall for receiving the hase portion or strip oi matches,
41-, In a-tohacco users appliance, a match hon formed of resilient sheet metal including a rear wall, side walls formed on the side edges of the rear wall, a ihront wall, the
lower edges of the front and rear walls 7 heing provided with companion hinged har= role, a pintle extending through the harrels, a resilient top well formed on the rear wall, a head formed on the front edge of the top wall for receiving the hin ed front wall a resilient clip formed in die top wall ior receiving the hose portion of a strip or? matches, and a strnclr out linger piece formed on the hinged front wall.
5. A match receptacle emhodying a rear supporting wall, side walls, a resilient top wall, and a hinged front wall, the resilient top wall heing adapted to hold the front well against opening movement and to trictionally retain a strip of matches in position'against accidental removal.
