Description

Nov. 27 1923.
R. L. MARIAN! comma]: FAN AND LAMP Han dolph L.Ma 5g i Filed Aug. 5, 1922 Patented Nov. 27, 1923. I
UNITED STATES RANDOLPH L. MARIANI, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED FAN AND LAMP.
Application filed August 5, 1922. Serial No. 579,853.
T 0 all whom. it may concern Be it known that I, RANDOLPH L. MARI- ANI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Fans and Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined lamp and fan devices and more especially relates to a lamp provided with a concealed automatically operated fan in such relation to the lamp that it will provide a ventilating current of air deflected in the desired direc-= tion by a lamp shade and air deflector; and to such a combined apparatus of this character as will present an artistic appearance and be of durable and eflicient construction.
' One of the objects of my invention is to provide means in a combined apparatus of the character above referred to which will furnish light and at the same time means to provide ventilation by the operation of a fan combined with the lamp structure, which can be operated and controlled independently of the operation of the lamp.
In the accompanying drawing in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts Figure lIs an elevation of my device with a top hood or screen removed therefrom.
Fi re 2-Is an elevation of the screen or hood referred to in Figure 1 as removed.
Referring more particularly to the drawings my device is provided with a base 1, upon which I centrally and vertically mount in fixed relation thereto a standard or pedestal 2. This pedestal 2 is provided with a series of arms or brackets 3 projecting late erally therefrom, each being provided at their upper ends with lamp sockets 4, adapted to have operably mounted therein any suitable electric lamp 5, or other means of illumination. The standard 2 extends upwardly above the brackets 3 and has mounted thereon a slidably adjustable, tubular top or member 6, which. is provided in order that the portion of my device carried on said tubular member 6 maybe adjusted on the standard 2 to any desired height. The member 6 is provided with a set screw 7 which i adapted to engage the standard 2 and lock the member 6 in any position of an adjustment thereon. Fixedly mounted. on the member 6 is a light reflector and air deflector 8 preferably of glass and which is shown as partly cut away in Figure 1 so as to disclose the balance of the devices. Upon the upper surface ofthis reflector deflector 8 is mounted a framework 9 consisting of vertical standards 10 and an upper assembling ring 11 holding said standards in operative relation to each other. From the assembling ring 11, and there above, I mount a framework formed by a series of inclined supports or standards 12 which are fixed at their lower ends to the assembling ring 11 and have their upper ends attached fixedly to the frame work or body portion of an electric motor 13. which is thereby held in operative relation to and above the reflector-deflector member 8. To the shaft 14 of this electric motor 13 I attach a fan 15 which is thereby rotatable with the shaft of the motor. Around the fan 15 I provide a usual safety cage or frame 16 which is carried by standards 12 in its proper position.
Entirely enclosing the parts of my device included by the members 8 to 13 I mount upon the reflector 8 a screen '17 of wire or other suitable material which may be upon its sides suitably decorated and which is provided with a conical top portion 18. This screen i removable from the deflector 8 and thereby permits convenient access to the fan and motor parts. For purposes further concealing the presence of the motor in my device, I cover the conical top portion 18 of the screen 17 by any suitable nontransparent ornamental fabric or other material fashioned in the form of a top shade or dome-like cover.
In the base portion 1 I provide an aperture 20 in which I incase a three point electric switch 21, from which I extend conductors 2223 upwardly through astandard 2 and its top portion 6 to the motor 13, for the purpose of carrying electric energy to the motor. The switch 21 is provided with a suitable controlling arm and is adapted to control the motor 13 for varying speeds. From the sockets 4 carrying the lamps 5 I extend suitable electric conductors to the aperture 20 in the base 1 of my device and there connect said conductors to electric conductors in a cord 23 which cord is rovided at its outer end with a plug 24 a apted to i connected by conductors branching therefrom to the switch and motor circuit to furnish power to operate the motor 13.
For the purpose of better illumination I provide a depending fringe 25 around the periphery or edge of the reflector 8, and for purposes of utility I provide a socket or recess 26 between each of the brackets 3 of such size and shape that I can insert therein a small clock or timepiece 27.
My device is in its entirety so fashioned as to be of an ornamental and decorative design and to be a desirable addition or useful piece of furniture in a home, dining hall or cafe.
By reason of the particular construction and arrangement of parts of my combined lamp and fan. I am enabled to furnish light by means of the lamps 5 independently of the operation of the fan motor 13, which motor however may be if desired, operated while the lights are on. Presuming the plug 24 to have been connected to an electrical circuit the lamps 5 will then light and the motor 13 may be operated by the switch 21. W hen the motor is in operation it draws in air through the top portions 18-19 of the screen 17 and forces this air downwardly against the upper surface of the deflector 8, which by reason of its curved substantially funnel shaped contour deflects the currents of air laterally outward through the screen 17, on a level,. as it emerges through the screen, substantially that of the edge of deflector 8. I provide a deflector of this shape and a fan arranged in relation thereto as described for this specific purpose namely, to direct the air outwardly at such a level as will not permit it to normally strike up on the dining table or on those sitting around or near the lamp. I thereby create a satisfactory ventilation by means of a fan without subjecting those using the light to the effect of unnecessary direct draught.
' Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a base, a pedestal thereon, a clustered series of electrically energized lights on said pedestal, electrical conductors connecting said lights; with a source of electrical energy, a vertically adjustable member mounted on said pedestal, means to lock said member in adjusted relation to said pedestal, a light reflecting andvair deflecting member mounted above said lights on said adjustable member, a supporting f 'ame mounted on andextending above said re flect0r-deflector member, a motor driven fan mounted on said framework and above said deflector member, electrical conductors connecting said motor with a source of electrical energy, and switch means in said base adapted to control said motor for varying speeds.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a base, a pedestal thereon, a clustered series of electrically energized lights on said pedestal, electrical conductors connecting said lights with a source of electrical energy, a vertically adjustable member mounted on said pedestal, means to lock said member in adjusted relation to said pedestal, a light reflecting and air deflecting member mounted above said light on said adjustable member, a supporting frame mounted on and extending above said reflector-deflector member. a motor driven fan mounted on said framework and above said deflector member, an electrica conductor connecting said motor with a source of electrical energy,'a switch means in said base adapted to control said motor for varying speeds, a non-transparent perforated screen removable mounted on said deflector member adapted to conceal and encase said fan and motor but permit the free passage of air currents thcrcthrough.
In testimony whereof I aflix my sign aturc.
