BED.
Application filed October 15, 1919. SerialiNo. 330,861.
To all Iwhom t fmavy/ concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANK A. GARBUTT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, have invented a neT and useful Improvement Comprising a Bed, oiu which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to beds and an object et the invention is to provide a bed Which will greatly add to the comfort of the person using it.
Further objects and advantages Will be set forth more in detail hereinafter.
Referring to the drawings which are for illustrative purposes only.
F ig. 1 is a plan view of the spring structure certain portions being omitted for the sake of clearness of illustration.
Fig. 2 is a sect-ion on a plane represented b y the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
ig. 3 is a section on a plane represented line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
4 is an enlarged vievi7 of one of the plungers in Va partly compressed position.
Fig. 5 is a view of a spring head.
F 6 is a view oiE a rigid head.
ln this form of spring, a box is provided. this box having slats 51 across the top and slats 52 across the bottom. Sliding freely in holes in the - slats 51 and 52 are a series ot stems 53 each ot these stems having a head 54. The head 54 may be formed ot wirebent into a spiral as shown in Figs. 1 te 5 inclu-sive. or it may be of solid material as shown at 55 in Fig, 6. Rigidly secured on each of the stems 53 is a Washer 56 which is engaged by a spiral compression spring 57. The tension of these compression sp1-ings can be adjusted by a series of Wedges 5S which are secured to a strip 59. so that they can be manipulated trom outside the bed through a convenient opening. The heads 5i are placed quite close together as slim i in Fig. 1 for the purpose of supportinfl' the mattress.
lV` claim my invention: .s
1. ln a bed: a plurality of plungers, each including a stem and a head on the upper end ot said stem; means t'or mounting the stems et said plungers for axial movement; elastic means for resisting the movement of each plunger; and means for adjusting the tension of the elastic means of a plurality of said plungers together.
-ivedges on each or" said 2. ln Va bed a plurality ot plungers Yeach comprising a head; a stem to which said head is elastically secured; means for guiding said stem to prevent all movement of said stem except along the axis ot said stein, said stem being free to move along said axis; and elastic means for resisting movement along said axis.
3. In a bed a plurality comprising a head; a stem to which said head is elastically secured; means for guiding said stem to prevent all movement of said stem except along the axis of said stem, said stem being tree to move along said axis; elastic means for resisting movement along said axis; and means for adjusting the strength of said elastic means.
il. ln bed: a plurality of plungers, each including` a stem and a head on the upper end of said stem; means tor mounting the stems of said plungers tor axial movement; elastic means tor resisting the movement of each plunger; a plurality of slidaloly mounted strips, each extending under a plurality of said plunger stems: and a. plurality of strips for engaging ends oit' the plungers over said strips upon moi/'ement of said strips. whereby the tension of said elastic means is adjusted.
5. In a bed the, combination ot" a plurality ot plungers each comprising: a head; a stem to which said head is secured; means for guiding said stem to prevent all move-r ment except along the axis of said stem. said stem being tree to move along the axis of said stem; a positive stop ior limiting the upward vmovement of said stem; a spring 'forcing said stem against said stop; and means `for adjusting the tension ot said spring without @fleeting the vertical position of said hea-d.
G. ln a hed: a including a stem endr of said stem; mea-ns tor mounting the stems of said plungers 'tor axial movement; clastii` means 'for resisting the movement of each plunger; and means operatable trom the outside of the bed for adjusting the tension of said elastic means.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Los Angeles, California, this 9th day of October, 1919.
'FRANKA- GARBUTT.
