UNDERWEAR.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, CHARLES W. Carson, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Underwear, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in garments, the general object of the invention being to provide means for replacing the buttons at the lower part of the garment which are used for keeping this part of the garment closed.

Another object of the invention is to provide means for facilitating the opening of this part of the garment while keeping it normally closed.

This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several. parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.

In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the sev eral views, and in which Figure 1 is a front fragmentary View of a portion of agarment made in accordance with my invention.

Figure 2 is a view taken transversely through the garment showing my invention in section: Figure 3 is a detail view of one of the flap members.

In these views A indicates the garment which is of the type usually referred to as a union-suit, though it will be understood that the invention may be used on other garments, such as bathing suits and the like. This garment opens in the front. This opening divides the front of the garment into a right hand section 1 and a left hand section 2, one section carries the buttons at its edge for engaging the button holes in the other section so as to connect the two portions together.

It is the object of my invention to eliminate the buttons and button holes in the crotch part of the garment, yet to have the crotch of the garment normally closed under all conditions and I render this possible by attaching a flap 3 to each of the sections 1 and 2, the flap being smaller at one end than at the other and each flap has its large end sewn to the edge of one section, as shown at 4:. The small end of each flap is sewn to the opposite section, as at 5. The flaps extend at right angles to the opening and one flap is on the outer part of the garment and the other one is upon the inner part and both flaps terminate above the crotch of the garment.

These flaps act to hold the garment closed but permits easy opening of the same and renders the use of buttons unnecessary.

Instead of sewing the flaps to the edges of the garment they may be otherwise attached.

It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.

I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.

What I claim is 2- A garment of the character described having its front divided .into left and right sections having their inner edges overlapped, flaps secured to the garment at the opposite ends only and being designed smaller at one end than the other, one of said flaps has its small end secured to the outside of the left section and its large end secured to the inner edge of the right section above the crotch, the other of said flaps being arranged parallel with the first mentioned flap and designed similar in size and structure and having its small end secured to the inside of the right section and its large end secured to the outer edge of the left section.
