Description

Nov. 20 1923 f 1,475,077 I H. MANGIN JOINTS EXTENSIBLE AND RETRA NS FOR MOVABLE CTABLE IN ALL DIRECTIO PLATFORMS WITHOUT INTERRUPTION 0F CONTINUITY Filed March 26 Patented Nov. 20, 1923.
HENRI Mariam, or ARMENTIEBES, FRANCE.
JOINTS EXTENSIBLE AND RETRACTABLE EN ALL DIRECTIONS FOR MOVABLE PLAT- FORMS WITHOUT INTERRUPTION 0F CONTINUITY.
Application filed March 26, 1928.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY MANGIN, a citizen of France, anda resident of Armentieres, in the Department du Nord, France, have invented some new and useful improvements in joints extensible and retractable in all directions for movable platforms without interruption of continuity, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to extensible platforms for railway cars, tramways, and the like and its object is to provide a joint extensible and retractable in all directions, without interruption of the continuity.
I attain this object by the provision of a band of india rubber as means permitting of extension and contraction in all directions, further means being provided to ensure its support and functioning in a satisfactory manner.
The invention serves more especially to cover the intermediate spaces between two cars coupled together in order to support the traveling or working people or any load, whilst ieldmg at the same time to all occurring deformations of the road, such as curves, slopes which are very pronounced or extended, and the like.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
The Figures 1 to 3 represent schematically in plan views three different positions which the joint could undergo, viz, the retracted position, the normal position and the stretched position, according as to whether the train is situated in a curve or in a straight line; V
Figure 1 represents in longitudinal section the fitting of the joint between two platforms of cars, in .a stretched position, whereas 7 Figure 5 shows the same joint in a normal position;
Fig. 6 shows the joint in the retracted position.
The device consists mainly of a band of india rubber 1 fastened to bars 2 placed at the extremities of wagons or platforms 1 and P and supported by counterplates 3 actuated upon by fastening screws 4:.
This band of india rubber is supported by Serial No. 827,914.
a movable plate 5 covering the free space between the wagons P and P.
This space and the said plate are determined according to the curves to be taken.
A guide 6 and springs 7 arranged between the extremities 8 of the platforms and a projection 9 permit the return of the plate into its normal positionFigs. 2 and 5-in straight directions, after the passage of curves and slopes-compare Figs. 1, 3, 4:
and 6.
The plate 5 assures the rigidity of the india rubber band 1 for supporting the persons or loads placed upon the joint.
This joint permits the construction of movable platforms without interruption of the continuity, in straight directions as well as in curves or slopes, whilst permitting all necessary play to the cars or trains.
The overcoming of these curves or slopes is assured by means of vertical articulations 10 and horizontal articulations 11 coupling two consecutive waggons.
What I claim is:
1. In joints for movable platforms between coupled cars, a band of india rubber, means to fasten the same by its extremities to the two consecutive cars, above the space between the platforms.
2. In joints for movable platforms, for cars, a band of india rubber, means to fasten the same by its extremities to two waggons coupled together, to cover the space between their platforms, a'movable plate below the said india rubber band, and means to ensure sliding of this plate upon the extremities of the platforms to raise the rigidity of the system.
3. In joints for movable platforms, for cars, a band of india rubber, means to fasten the same to the cars, to cover the space between their platforms, a rigid plate to support the said india rubber band, means to permit sliding of said plate upon the platorms of two consecutive cars, and means constituted by springs to return the said plate to its normal position in straight directions, and to secure at the same time the connection between the plate and the extremities of the platforms.
4. In joints for movable platforms, for
cars, a band of india rubber to serve as an extensible and retractable joint, means to fasten the same to the cars to cover the space between the platforms, a rigid plate to sup port the said: india rubber band, means to permit-sliding of said plate uponthe platforms of two consecutive cars, springs to establish connection between said plate and the cars and to return the plate to its normal position after displacement, means to guide 10 the plate and vertical and horizontal articulations to ensure overcoming of curves and slopes of the road.
"In witness whereof I afiix my signature.
HENRI MANGIN.
