AUTOMATIC CABTON-HEAD-COA'IING MACHINE.
Application filed August 11, 1921. Serial No. 491,453.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that Fnnnnnrox COATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Carton- Head-Coating Machines, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to machines for the manufacture of. paper or pulp cartons and has special reference to a machine for coating the inside of carton heads with a waterproofing material.
One important object of theinvention is to providean improvement on machines disclosed in my prior application for patent on liquid applier filed the 27th day of April and bearing the Serial Number 464,839.
A second important object of the invention is to provide an entirely automaticmachine for coating the inside of carton heads wherein the duty of the operator will be confined solely to placing the uncoated heads in position on themachine and removing the same as coated.
A third important object of the invention is'the provision of an improved automatic machine for this purpose wherein a definite .amount of coating will be applied to each of the carton heads passing through the machine.
A fourth important object of the inven tion is the provision of an improved machine wherein the coating material will be evenly and automatically spread all over the surface to be coated. In the construction of the present shown' embodiment of the machine there is provided a stand 10 having a standard support extending up from one side thereof and terminating at its upper end in an arm 12. Th1s'arm12 carries a bearing 13 and on the standard 11 is formed a bearing 14 aligned with the bearing 13. Through these bearlngs extends a shaft 15 carrying a fixed pulley 16 and idler pulley 17. On the other end of this shaft is a bevel gear 18 which meshes with a bevel gear 19 fixed to a shaft 20 journalled at its upper end in a bearing 21 on the end of the arm 12. This shaft 20 extends downward through a sleeve 22 and having vertical bearings 24 at the outer ends of its arms. On the upper end of the sleeve 22 is a belt pulley 25 and a belt 26, connecting this belt pulley with a belt pulley 27 on the shaft 15, the belt being lead around idlers 28. On the sleeve 22 is also provided a gear 29 wherewith mesh gears 30 each carried on a shaft 31 journalled in a respective bearing 34. By this means the gear 29 revolves in an opposite direction to the spider 23 so that the shafts 31 not only revolve about the axes of the shaft 20 as a center but also revolve on their own axes very rapidly. At one side of the machine there is provided a tank 32 for receiving the material for the coating. This tank 32 has an opening in its bottom controlled by a valve 33 provided with a valve arm 34.
On the post 11 is a bracket 35 to which is pivoted one end of a lever 36 connected to the valve arm or lever 34 by a link 37. On the shaft 15 is a cam 38 which is so arranged that as each shaft 34 comes into alinement I to the shaft is keyed a four armed spider 23 with the opening of the valve 33 the valve arm 34 will be depressed. and the valve opened. On each of the shafts 31 is a carton top carrier 39 whereon may be seated carton tops such as are shown in Figure 3 at T. Thus when a top T is in position on a carrier and the top passes beneath the open ing of the valve 33 a certain definite amount of coating material will be discharged onto the carton top, the amount depending on the length of time the valve is kept open by the action of the cam 38. It will be obvious that the rotation of the shafts 31 will rotate the tops T and thus theapplied material will be spread over the surface. In order to keep this spreading to be even throughout there is provided projecting from the standard 11 anarm 43 wherethrough moves a plunger 41 having its upper end pivotally operator stands in front of the machine and connected as at 4:2 to the lever 36. Sur rounding this plunger above the arm A?) is a coil spring 40 which normally hold-s the lever 86 and plunger 41 raised. However, when the cam depresses the lever 36 1t moves the plunger 41 downward and'on the lower end of this plunger there is provided a brush/l4. The position of the brush is just one-quarter of a revolution away from the valve 83. I
From the foregoing it will be seen that the action of the machine is as follows. The
presses top T on the heads 39 as they come around. As these tops pass 'below the valve 33they are provided with a charge of coated material which is spreadv on the top by the rotation thereof. Further as each top passes under. the portion of the brush 44 the latter is depressed and engages the top to spread the coated material thereover. -As the tops pass around again to the operators station the latter removes the coated top with one hand while placing an uncoated top with the other. Thus the device operates rapidly and continuously and provides for thoroughly and smoothly coating the can tops.

It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to'the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished toinclude all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is v 1. In a cartonhead coating machine, a shaft, an arm projecting fromthe shaft, a carton head carrier at the outer end of the arm, means to rotate the shaft and thus move the carrier in a circular path, a tank for coating material above said path, a
for opening the valve during the passage of the carrier beneath the nozzle and mechani 'cal means spaced from the nozzle to spread the material ejected from the nozzle.
2. In a carton head coating machine, a head carrier, means to cause said carrier to travel along a predetermined path, a dis? charge nozzle for coating material located adjacent said path and positioned to discharge coating material onto ahead on said carrier, a valve controlling said nozzle, means to open the valveduringthe passage of the carrier across thenozzle, a spreading brush located in normally spaced relation above'the path of the carrier, and means connected with the valve opening means for bringing the brush into contact with a head to rotate the head carrier about its axis conon the carrier during the passage of the latter beneath said brush.

In a carton head, coating machine, a shaft, an arm projecting from the shaft, a carton head carrier at the outer end of the arm, means to rotate the shaft and thus move the carrier in a circular path, a tank for coating material above said path, a valved nozzle in the bottom of said tank, means actuated by the shaft driving means for opening the valve during the passage of the carrier beneath thenozzle, a spreading brush located in normally spaced relation above.

In a carton head coating machine, a shaft, an arm projecting from the shaft, a' carton head carrier at the outer endof the arm, means to rotate the shaft and thus move the carrier in a circular path, a. tank for coating material above said path, a valved nozzle in the bottom of said tank, means actuated by the shaft driving means for'opening the valve during the passage of the carrier beneath the nozzle, mechanical means spaced from the nozzle to spread the material ejected from the nozzle and imeans tinuously during its travel.
6. Ina carton head coating machine, a head carrier, means to cause said carrier to travel alongfa predetermined path, a discharge nozzle for coating material located adjacent said path and positioned to discharge coatmg material onto a head'on said carrier, a valve controlling said nozzle,
' means to open the valve during the passage of the carrier across the nozzle, a spreading brush'located in normally spaced relation above the path of the carrier, means connected with the valve opening means for bringing the brush into contact with a head on the carrier during the passage of the lat ter beneath said brush and means to rotate the head carrier about its axis continuously during its travel.
