Description
J. D.. UPPENDICK &`A. ANDEARSEN.
Window-Frames.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. N
FREDERICK J. D. OPIENDICK AND ANDREV ANDER-SEN, OF BRONXVIILE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-FRAMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,424, dated February 10, 1874 application filed November 24, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that iva-FEEDERIcx J. D. OrrENnIcK and ANDREW ANDERsEN, both of Bronxville, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Face-Pieces for Window-Frames; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l represents a vertical section of a window-frame, including a vertical section of the face-piece. Fig. 2 is a cross-section in the plane w .fr of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a front view of the face-piece detached.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of pockets for the boxes of window-frames, wherein the ends of the removable facepieces are formed with bevel ends, inclined downward, the object being to obtain easy access to the wells in which the weights and pulleys for suspending the sashes ofthe windows are arranged. Our invention consists in providing the front or removable face-piece with beveled ends and with a fixed or permanent parting-strip, extending throughout the length of the said face-piece, so that it can be made of the whole width -cf the space between the head-stop and the outer strip of the window-frame, and thus secure access to the entire width of the well. Our invention further consists in providing the removable face-pieee with a flange or extension projecting laterally beyond the edge of the parting-strip, said iiange abutting against a shoulder formed in the outer strip of the window frame, upon which the face piece is clamped, to hold it in position.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a window-frame containing the well B for the reception of the weight and cord by which the sash is balanced. The inner part C of the frame is provided with an opening, the top and bottom of which are-beveled, inclining downward, to correspond with the beveled ends E of the face-piece, the upper beveled end of the said face-piece being beveled on its outer face, while the lower end is beveled on its inner face, so that when inserted into the opening the joints will iit closely, shed water, and be weather-proof.` The face-piece D is made of a width greater than the width of the opening in the window-strip (l, so that one edge, a, will iit the inside, or under the head-stop H, while the other edge or iiange, b, will iit against a shoulder, c, formed on the inner edge of the outer strip C of the window, by which means the face-piece can be clamped in position from the outside, by suitable devices, such as hereinafter described, the head-stop H and shoulder c limiting its outward movement, and serving also to form a water and weather proof joint. lith the face-piece, throughout its length, is formed thereon orpermanently connected therewith, the parting-rail, beveled at each end, in a manner similar to the ends of the face-piece, so that the same is carried by the face-piece, when removed for the purpose of securing access to the well, and by providing the face-piece with the parting-strip we are enabled to make the iiange or projecting edge b extend beyond the parting-rail, for the purpose of having it abut against the shoulder c formed in the outer strip C of the window-frame and further, the face-piece can be made of a width greater than the opening, so that when removed the whole width of the well will lie-exposed and laid open to the workman.
rllhe face-piece D, constructed as described in this example of our invention, is retained in place by means of a latch composed of lockingar1ns K, which are operated by a button, L, and catch in tapering grooves M on opposite sides of the face-piece within the well. The button L is contained in a recess or cavity, N, so that it does not interfere with the movement of the window '-sashes.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim is Y l. The face-piece D, having the iiange l) extending beyond the parting-strip, for abutting against the shoulder c of the strip C of the window-frame, substantially as described.
2. The face-) iieee D and its parting-strip, with the looking-arms K and grooves M, subbeveled at each end, as deseiibedlin eombistantially as described. nation with the locking-arm I mi counter T mkbutton L, silbstzuitiully as described, for 1e purpose specified.
3. The face-piece D, having the flange b Witnesses: zuid parting-strip, and made to t under the Y A. G. GOLES, head-stop H and shoulder c, in combination J. ARIOKsoN.
