Be it known that I, ADOLPH Srncirr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams and State ot Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dampers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to air inlet dampers for stoves, furnaces and other heaters, and aims to provide a novel damper construction for the ashpit door or other portion of a stove or heater, which serves as a draft regulator or register, spark arrester and an ornamental symmetrical panel.
Another object of the invention is to provide a damper device of novel construction for obtaining a positive control and regulation of the draft, and the damper being of such construction as to combine therein a draft register, spark arrester and ornamental panel presenting the same symmetrical appearance in the different positions of the damper.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a damper construction of the kind indicated which is simple and comparatively cheap in construction and manufacture, and which is practical and efficient in use.
'With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the descrip tion proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrange-ment of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Fig. 1 is a front view of an ashpit door of a stove showing the damper in closed position.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary rear view of the door showing the damper open one-half way.
Figs. 3 and 4. are vertical sections on the respective lines 3-73 and 4-4 of Fig. 1.

circular opening 8 for the admission of air, and said opening` is located near the upper edge of said door or wall, above the horizontal center line of the door, wherel'iy the lower portion of the door is imperforate to prevent the ashes from falling through the lower portion of the door, which freonn-ntly happens when the draft openings eX- tend to the lower portion of the door.
The damper proper. indicated at 9, is of circular contour, and is of dished or convexed form, with its edge turned or directed rearwardly to abut the outer or forward face of the door 7, said damper beinglocated at the outer side of the door. rlhe edge or rim of the damper extends above the upper curved edge of the opening 8, and said opening is of slightly smaller size than one-half of the damper 9, whereby the upper half of the damper surrounds said opening.
The damper is pivotally' connected with the door or wall 7 for rotary motion, and the damper has a central rearwardly or invrardly extending boss 10 provided with a central aperture receiving a pivot spindle or pintle 11 which engages through the door 7 so as to be anchored to said door. rIhe door 7 has an upstanding portion 12 ahove the spindle 11 at the lower edge of the opening 8 for the contact of the boss 10 with the door completely around said spindle. The damper 9 is provided at the outer or forward side of the boss 10 with depression or recess 1S in which a cup or spring socket 14 is seated, the spindle 11 projecting centrally through said cup or socket and having a head or knob 16 at its outer or forward end over which a sheet metal cap 15 is fitted. rThe cap 15 is slidable in the cup or socket 14 and has an instrnck corrugation 17 engaging in an annular groove provided in the head or knob 16. A coiled expansion spring` 18 surrounds the spindle 11 and is confined between the cup lef and head or knob 16 within the socket or recess of said cup, wherehy'the cup or member 14C is pressed inwardly or rearwardly by the spring, thereby holding the damper 9 under tension against the door 7, and retaining the damper in any angular position to which it is turned.
The damper 9 is provided with a diametrical partition or division flange 19 at the inner or rear side thereof having its ends united with the rim or margin of the damper and having the intermediate portion merging into the boss 10, and the edge of the partition or flange 19 is tlush with the edge of the damper so that said partition abuts or contacts with the face oit the door. .The partition or flange 19 divides the damper into two halves, and one-half has the apertures or perforations 2O providing a grated air inlet opening, while the other halt ot the damper is imperforate but is provided with depressions 21 resembling the apertures 20, and giving the outer side or surface oi" the damper a symmetrical appearance throughout the area thereof. The damper is thus of ornamental design and will have the saine symmetrical appearance in any position thereof. The apertures 2O and depressions 21 give an outstanding design to the damper which is nickle-plated or otherwise finished so that the damper provides a circular panel for the door.
The damper has an outstanding finger piece 22, preferably near one end o'l the partition 19, for convenience in turning the damper.
The door 7 has an outstanding stop lug 23, and the rim of the damper has outstanding lugs 24; and 25 to contact with the lug 23, so as to limit the turning movement oi the damper when moved to open and closed positions.
In order to regulate the draft, the damper is turned about the pivot. When the damper is turned to move the lug 2i against the lug 23, as seen in Fig. 1. the closed or imperiorate halt ot the damper is disposed across the opening, thereby closing said opening, and shutting oli the inlet oil: air. the partition or flange 19 contacting with the door underthe opening S and the upper halt ot the margin or rim o'l the damper contacting with the door above the opening` 8,in order` that said partition 19 and upper halt ot the damper rim completely surround the opening to prevent the inflow ot air. By turning the damper halt' way around, to bring the lug 25 against the lug E23, the open or perforated halt ot' the damper is disposed across the opening S. thereby admitting the tull amount oi air through the openings. The opening ot the damper is grated, thereb v providing a dra'tt register. as well as a spark arrester. the bars or grate eKtending across the opening the damper serving to arrest hot ashes or lumps ot burning coal o1' Jfuel which tend to 4fly through the openings. The d aniper can be turned to intermediate positions tor regulating the [low ot ainand in any position ot the damper between extreme closed and open positions, the partition or flange 19 extends across the opening 8, radially of said opening, with the lower portion of said partition contacting with the door i' below-said opening, so that the hallC oi the damper which is iinperforate will close a portion of the opening 8, such as at the lett ot the partition 19 in Fig. 2. In other words, the partition or flange' 19 prevents the flow o' air within the damper itself between the imper'torate and open halves ot the damper, and the impertorate portion or half ot the damper will close that portion ot the opening 8 across which the impertorate portion ot the damper extends1 in a position olf the damper.

A damper construction comprising a wall haring an opening, and a dished damper pivoted centrally to said wall below said opening and having its edge directed toward and abutting said wall. the damper having a diametrical partition abutting said walland dividing the damper into halves, one halt ot the damper being imperforate to extend across and close said opening and the other halt ot the damper having a grated opening to register with the rst named opening.

A damper construction comprising a wall having an opening, a dished damper having its edge directed toward and abutting said wall, the damper having a central boss directed toward and abutting said wall and having a diametrical partition united with said boss and edge portion ot the damper and abutting said wall, said partition dividing the damperinto halves. one
