TRIMMING DEVICE FOR SEWING MACHINES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. DE Von, a citizen of the United States, residin at VVestfield, in the county of Union and tate of New Jersey, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Trimming Devices for Sewing Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to trimming mechanism for sewing machines and it has for its object the improvement of the trimming mechanism of thattype disclosed in my Patent No. 1,289,125 of December 31, 1918, whereby the trimmer blade may be thrown into or out of operation.
In the preferredform of the improvement the vertically disposed reciprocatory trimmer-blade carrier is mounted adjacent the needle-bar upon a pair of vertically swinging arms and receives operative movements from a suitable connection with the needle operating lever. Mounted upon the trimmer-blade carrier is a latch for establishing and interrupting operative connection between the carrier and the needle-lever whereby the arrier, with its trimmer blade, may be arrested and shifted into retracted position clear of the Work-support.
The improvement is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the machine, partly in section, showing the movable trimmer-blade in operative position; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the machine and Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation through the line as w in F igQ 1,
both Figures 2 and?) showing the movable trimmer-blade in retracted position; Fig. 4 isa similar sectional elevation with the trimmer-blade in its lowest position; Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation similar to Fig. 3 showing the trimmer-blade carrier unlatched from its actuating arm and with the blade iniextreme retracted position clear of the work-support, and Fig. 6 is a detail showing a portion of the actuating arm and its eccentric stud connection with the crankarm.
The improvement is embodied in a ma chine preferably of the chain-stitch type. It comprises the base 1, from which rises the standard 2 provided with the overhanging arm 3 terminating in. the head 1 in which are mounted for rec-iprocatory movement the usual needleand resser-bars. J ournaled in the lower portion of the standard, lengthwise of the machine, is the mainshaft 5 having fixed upon its rear end the balance wheel 6 with the belt-groove 7. Se-
needle-lever has a link-connection 18 with a collar 14 clamped upon the needle-bar 15 provided with the usual needle. The collar 14 is formed'with an upstanding lug 16 tapped to receive a pivot-screw 17 passing through a suitable aperture in the lower end of the combined linlrand take-up member 18 provided with the usual threadeye for controlling the needle-thread in the wellknown manner. The upper end of the takeup member is apertured to receive a pivotscrew 19 tapped into the end of the rockerarm 20 rigidly secured upon the rocking pin 21. The pin 21 is journaled in a suitable bearing-bracket 22 sustained by the overhanging arm 3, afcollar 23, fastened upon the pin 21 by the screw 24; restraining the pin from longitudinal movement in its bearing-bracket. The construction so far described is substantially the same asthat disclosed in my prior patent previously referred to.
Secured to the rocker-arm 20 by the screw 25, and disposed eccentrically with respect to the pin 21, is the roller-stud 26 upon which fulcrumed one end 27 of an actuating arm 28 which is apertured intermediate its ends to receive pivot screw 29 tapped intothe upper end of the trimmerbladc carrier 80. The arm 28 and carrier 30 constitute an articulated endwise movable trimmer-arm and the pivot screw '29 conwhich is clamped therein by the screw 31. The upper trimmerblade 31 cooperates in the welllznown manner with a lower or stationary blade 32 removably secured in the throat-plate 33.
. Intermediate its ends the carrier 30 is provided with a laterally extending screwpin 34 slidingly embraced by a boss formed upon one end of the arm 35 whose other end v trimmer blade carrier and, under the action of the spring40, maintains the upper trimmer-blade 31, when in operative position, yieldingly in cooperativerelation with the lower or stationary trimmer-member 32. The blade carrier 30 is provided near its lower end with a lateral arm 41 which contacts with the depending guide-member 42 secured to the bracket-arin 3 by the screws 43, thereby preventing lateral displacement of the blade-carrier under the action of the spring when in retracted position.
To permit the movable trimmer-blade 3 tobe uncoupled from the actuating arm 28 and shifted into retracted position clear of the work-support, the carrier 30 is provided With a latch 44. The latch is pivotally supported upon the shoulder screw 45, tapped into carrier 30 and its upper end 46 is notched to form a hook adapted to engage the end of the actuating arm 28. The latch is pressed toward the actuating arm 28 by the spring 47 having one end rigidly secured in a suitable aperture in the latch and its free end in sliding contact with the screwstud 48 tapped mto the carrier 30.
The latch 44 constitutes connecting means between the carrier 30 and actuating arm 28 for rigldly associating these parts together and for permitting relative movement between them to allow the trimmer-blade to be thrown into or out of operation. 7
The latch 44 is provided with a lateral stud 49 which projects through a clearance aperture 50 in the carrier 30 and which is adapted to engage an inverted detaining V hook 51 formed in the end of a plate 52 secured to the head'4 by the fastening screws I53. The detaining hook 51 retains the movable )blade-carrier 30 in retracted position when shifted clear of the work-support. The latch 44 is provided at its lower end with a laterally extending finger-piece 54 for convenience in manipulation.
It will be observed that the actuating arm '28 and the laterally spring-pressed arm 35 constitute a pair of vertically swinging arms for pivotally supporting the trimmer-blade carrier 30, one of the pivotal supporting points 34 being intermediate the ends of the carrier which receives operative movements through one of said arms, when the latch 44 couples the carrier 30 .with the actuating arm. It will also be observed that the latch 44 serves as a disconnectible connection between the carrier and its actuating arm for rendering the latter ineffective.
During the operation of the machine, when the movable trimmerblade 31 is in lower or operative position, the carrier 30 receives its reciprocatory movements from the actuating arm 28 by which it is "pivotally supported upon the floating fulcrum screw 29 and operatively connected by the springpressed latch 44, as clearly shown in'Figs. '2, 3 and 4.
lVhen it is desired to throw out the movable trimmer-blade, the operator grasps the finger-piece 54 of the latch 44 and moves it inwardly and upwardly thereby uncoupling the latch from the actuating -arm28 and at the same time shifting the movable blade carrier 30 into retracted position where it is retained by engagement of the stud 49 with the detaininghook 51, as represented in Fig.
5. In this position of the parts the actu-' ating arm 28 rocks idly past the upper hooked end 46 of the latch 44 without afi'ecting the pivotal connection 29 between the actuating arm and the carrier 30.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein islz+ 1. In a trimming mechanism for sewing machines, in combination, a trimmer-blade, a carrier therefor, a pair of movable arms directly connected with and ailording supporting means for said carrier, means for imparting operative movements :to one of said supporting arms, and'means including a latch for establishing and interrupting operative relation between one of said supporting arms and said carrier.

In a trimming mechanism for sewing machines, in combination, a rocker-arm, a trimmer actuating arm operatively connected with said rocker-arm, a trimmerblade, a carrier therefor pivotally connected with and supported by said actuating arm, and means for establishing and interrupting operative connection between said carrier and said actuating arm without affecting their connection. 7 u I 3. In a trimming-mechanism for sewing machines, in combination, a rocker-arm, a trimmer actuating arm operatively connected with said rocker-arm, a trimmerblade, 2. carrier therefor pivotally connected with and supported by said actuating arm, and a latch sustained by said carrier for establishing and interrupting operative connection between said carrier and said actuating arm without affecting their connection.
5. In a trimming mechanism for sewing machines, in combination, a trimmer-blade, an actuating arm, a carrier for said trimmerblade pivotally supported upon said actuating arm, a latch pivotally supported upon said carrier for establishing and interrupt ing the operative connection between the carrier and its actuating arm without affecting their pivotal connection, and means carried by said latch and engaging a stationary part of the machine for retaining said carrier in retracted position.
6. In a trimming mechanism for sewing machines, in combination, a rocker-arm, a trimmer actuating arm operatively connected with said rocker-arm, a trimmerblade, a carrier therefor pivotally connected with and supported by said actuating arm, and means mounted upon said carrier for interrupting operative connection between said carrier and said actuating arm without aflecting their connection to permit the manual retraction of the trimmer-blade.
7. In a trimming mechanism for sewing machines, in combination, a trimmer-blade, a carrier for said trimmer-blade, a pair of vertically swinging arms having direct pivotal connection with and adapted to support said carrier, actuating means for imparting operative movements to the trimmer-blade carrier through one of said arms, and means interposed between the last-named arm and said carrier for rendering said actuating means ineifective.
