Description

Nov. 6., 1923.
. E. M KENZIE AUTOMATIC OIL CAN HOLDER Filed June 10 1922 v M li: N
M M Y m\ Patented Nov. 6, 1923.
nnirso stares ELLIOT MCKENZIE, or MoUn'rA IN IRON, ivrInimsoTA.
AUTOMATIC OIL-CAN HOLDER.
Application filed June 10,
:- and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new nd useful Improvements in Automatic Oil-Can Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an oil-can holder, and the object of the invention is the construction of a simple and efilcient oil-can holder which will be easy to operate, for placing the can in position upon the holder,
" and which will also be easy to manipulate for removing the can off the holder.
With this and other objects in view, my invention comfprises certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a side holder, showing the thereon.
Figure 3 is a side view of the oil-can holder, with the oil-can removed.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the oilcan holder.
Figure 5 is a top plan view of my device.
Referring to the drawings by numerals,
view of my oil-can oll-can in position 1 designates a suitable support, to which is secured my oil-can holder Saidl holdetr mmprises a stand 2, which stand includes a base portion 3 and a bracket portion 4:;the
base portion and bracket portion are integral, but are positioned at right angles to each other. The bracket portion is secured to the support 1, preferably by ascrew (dotted lines) 5. V
The base portion 3 is slotted at 6, producing an upstanding, integral extension 7, which extension 7 can be fastened by an ordinary screw (not shown) to the support 1, it the operator desires. spring-guide 8 is cut out of the base portion 3, intermediate its edges, for the purpose hereinafter described.
An angular spring 9 is fastened, at 10, to the bracket portion 4:, and the upper end of spring 9 extends through the slot 6 and this reserve the right to make such alterations A depending 7 1922. Serial No. 567,374.
spring is provided with an oil-can seat 11 that is adapted to partly receive the oil-can 12 when the oil-can is resting upon the base portion 8, a shown in Fig. 2. This spring 9 serves to push the can off the base portion 3 when the pivotally-mounted fingers 13 are spread sufliciently apart to allow the oilcan 12 to pass therebetween. Each finger 13 is pivo-ta-lly-mounted on rivet 1 1, and its outer end is provided with an upstanding portion 15. The upstanding portion 15 is provided with a grip 16, that allows the operator to easily engage the finger, without injuring his hand, to press the finger outwardly to either allow the oil-can to be inserted upon the device, Fig. 2, or allow the oil-can to be removed from the device.
The depending spring-guide 8 has the pivoted fingers 13 normally pressing against its ends, whereas, when the outer ends of the fingers are pressed outwardly by the operator pressing outwardly on the grip 16, coil spring 17 will bear against the guide 8 and keep fingers from being spread unnecessarily wide apart, hence, the guide 8 performs two functions, to wit, it limits too much closing of the fingers together, and it prevents too much spreading of the fingers apart, by reason of the coilspring 17 bearing against the same. It shou d be tongue 8 tapers upwardly and therefore the converging side edges form camedges which will causelthevfingers 13 to be moved upwardly into firm gripping engagement with an oil can when they are moved towards each other. The ends of the coil spring 17 are connected to integral, depending, apertured lugs 18 formed upon the fingers 13.
While I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention, and have illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, certain minor changes or alterations may appear to one skilled in the art to which this invention relates, during the extensive manufacture of the same and I, therefore or changes as'shall fairly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
In an oil-can holder of the character denoted that the lUU scribed, the combination of a base having a support engaging attaching bracket portion formed thereon and depending therebelow,
said base and extending upwardly from the said spring forwardly and rearwardly of 10 rear end of the base, thereby forming a slot the base and preventing transverse move which extends from the rear portion of the ment, and said spring cooperating with said base toward the center thereof, a leaf spring movable retaining means, as and for the 5 fixed upon said depending bracket and expurposes set forth.
tending upwardly through said slot and In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my having its upper end formed into a can ensignature. gaging jaw, the portions of said base surrounding said slot limiting the movement of ELLIOT MCKENZIE.
