holder which comprises aback plate 11 havingsecured toits lower and side edges the channel members 12 forming retaining elements for engagement'with the bottom and side edges of the license plate 13. V
Secured to the rear face, near opposite ends of the .plate 11 are straps 14, the upper ends of which are bent angularly asgat 15 and carry clamps 16, adapted to engage a suitable supportlng element, such asrod 17 0 Attached adjacent the upper edge of the channel member 19 which cooperate with the; channel members 12 informing a complete frame for thelicense plate.
As illustrated in Figure 6, the spring hinges] normally tend to hold the channel 19 in closed position, and consequently'retain the license plate 13 ingpla-ce;

Cooperating with the hinged element above describedis a hingefeleinent comprising a' base plate 26 formed at opposite ends and'adjacent its lower edge with. outwardly extending- ears 27 and 28 which are adapted to fit between the ears 23 and 241 respectively, and like the ears 23and 2 1, are
pierced to receive the pintle 25 aforementioned. V I
Coiled about thepintle 25 is a torsional spring 30 formed at'the opposite ends with oppositely extending tangential arms; 31 hearing against the plates 21 and 26 as clearly shown in {Figure a clamp bolt upon :which is threaded a thumbnut 33 by which the jaws 32 maybe tightly drawn together about the support rod 17. 1 I
i It will thus be seen that there has been providedva particularly simple and eflicient means for interchangeably supporting license plates on motor vehicles and it isto be understood that there/may be made such I Theflclamps 16 above referred to comprise clamp cooperative jaws-32' pierced toreceive .Reference being had torthedrawing in,
.- detail, 10 designates in its entirety my sign Having thus ,described. invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isV:-
A sign holder comprising a plate, meansl fo supportingwsaid' plate, channel members rigidly secured to three sideof said plate a channel melnber hingedly connectedto the upperside of said. plate, and spring means normally urging the last named channel 'member into co-operation with the first 10
