Application filed January 28, 1921. 5, Serial'No. 44 5522.
To all whom it may concem: Be it known that I, A. J; Woon, acitizen of the United States of America, residing 'at Greenville. in. the county of Montcalm and State of Michigan, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Barrel-At taching Devices for Grease Guns or the like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the l0 invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertain's to make and use the same. i
. This invention relates to a barrel attaching device by means of. which a barrel grease dispensing apparatus may besecurely yetdetachably-connected to the barrel which contains the grease and from which the grease is to be dispensed. .The
' grease dispensing apparatus or. greaseigun,
as it is commonly called may befof any prepresent invention being connected :;thereto and disposed betweenit and the. barrel to which it is attached. It is a primary object and purpose of the invention to provide a device of this character which maybe readily applied to the grease gunand as read-- .ily. attached to the barrel or similar containerof grease, which isaeconOmical to make, and fully capable of securing the grease gun in proper position relative to the grease containing receptacle. Various other objects and purposes, than those stated, will appear fully and in detail as an understanding of the invention is had from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawinggin which, i
Fig. 1 is a partial sectional view and side elevation, showing my invention usedin attaching'a grease-gun to abarrel, the upper portion of the barrel being shown. c
Fig. 2 is a partial section and plan, the section being on the plane of line 2 2, of Fig. 1. v V i Fig. '3 is a view, rsimilar to;Fig. 1. of a r modified form of construction, and
1 Fig.4 is-a fragmentary partial section and plan, the section being on the plane' of line 4-4, ofFig. 3.
' parts in the different figures of the drawing.
The barrel adapted to containthe grease. has sides 1, and ends 2 which are connected;
'" the head 6 by bolts 22which pass through with the sides at the ends as shown, whereby application to which reference is made.
and grease gun only Like reference characters refer to like projecting chimes 3 are I The, barrel shown is of metal, 'but'in anycase, the barrel has such projecting chimes at the ends.
n opening-or bungghole 4 is made inone 9 adapted to be reciprocatedin; the tube c or an extension thereto as shown in said "Two clamping bars- 10 shaped to fit against opposite sides of the head Gare used, eachat each end having a projecting ear l1, and each being formed with two Spaced downwardly projecting feet 12 adapted to rest againsttheupper side of the barrel.
IBolts .13'passthrough the adjacentears of the two bars 10 andf receive' nuts whereby I the bars may be clamped tightly ag'ainstthe head.- 'Arod His connected witheach'bolt 13,1prefera'b1y being formed with a hook or eye 15 at its end through which thebolts pass. The rods extend toward the ends ot the barrel and 3T6 connected with bars 160:? flat metal, each atlits inner end having an upturnedearll and at its outer end a down wardly' and inwardly turned book 18. The
rods pass through the ears 1? and are threaded at theirouter ends-for the reception of nuts 19, while the hooks 18 are hooked under the chimes 3 of the barrel; It is apparent that by turning the nuts19', hooksjl8 may be" drawn into secure engagement withthe chimes, thereby drawing the feet 12 of bars 10 against the upper side of the barrel and in this manner securingthei grease gun in fixed relation to the barrel." The detachment of the/grease gun from the barrel is accomplished by merely loosening nuts 19 as'is obvious. I I g In Figs. 3 and 4, two bars 20,.each somewhat longerthan the b'arrelare used and grease gun, the, bars being formed with recesses inwhich the head seats. The: bars on their inner sides are cut away so that oneplaced at each side ofthe head '6 of the a slot 21' is left, when the. two bars are.
placed togetherkThe'bars' are clamped to are located inparallelism and at each end i through the slots 21 and each is formedwith a hook 24 ati-ts lower end which may be turned inwardly under the "barrel chi-me:
3. The upper end of each hooked rod 23 is threaded to receive a nut; 25 and, preferably, a washerlies against the upper sides of the bars 20 under each nut. -The rods are moved to proper position to locatethe hooks under the chimes after whichthe nuts are tightened. Toreniovefthe device from the barrel the nuts 25 'a re loosened and the: rods 23 "moved ou-twar'd'ly until thohooks v v wardl'y from the bars so 'a's to engage with are free 'o fthe barrel chimes.
\Vit'h either of these constructions, -'the secure attachment of the :g re'ase'pump 'to the barrel ma be attained and in 'a simple manner. The 'forlnshow n in Figs. 1 and 2 is preferred, though the. other Tfor'm shown in Figsdandd is serviceable an'dhas proved Very satisfactory. I Various other forms and modifications in" construction of the inv'en-' tion may -be resorted to without departing from the invention defined in the appended claims and Iconsider n13 selhe'ntitlied to all such constructions that come within the field covered by "the claims. lclairnz :1. A device of the character described.
corn-prising two :bars adapted to be placed:
one at each side :of; the :headof a' grease gun. means for securing said bars to said head, and .hookmembers operativ-ely con necticd with said bars toeng'age one w1th the V ch-irne at each end of abarrel "with which the-grease gun is. associated, substantially- 1 as described. r
bars together and serving to "draw bars toward eachother, a rod connected with each bolt, said rods extending in opposite direc- -t10ns,;a Inember formed -w1th an upturned earat its inner end and with a downturned and passing through the ear of its member,
and a nut threaded on to the end of each rod, substantially as described. 7
3. A constructioncontaining the elements inconlbination' defined in claim 2 combined with 'feet "integral with each of said bars and spaced :apart, said "feet projecting-downa barrel or other container with which said device is associated, substantially as described.
A device *o'f thegcharacter"described,
com rising two bars adapted 'to be placed one at each side of a grease dispensing 'ap for drawing the "said hook ineftnbers into' tight, engagement with said har'rel chinifels. A device of the c'haracter described, comprising two members, each at ts outer end heing forined with a "downwardly and inwardly turned hook and at its "inner end with an upturned ear, a rod passing through each-ear,- a nut threaded on to the outer end of each rod against the ear, a grease dispensing appliance, and means for 'connect ing the inner ends ofthe rods to said appliance, substantially as described.
