DOUBLE PLOW.
Application filed Apri1 2, 1921, Serial No. 458,057. Renewed March 12, 192a;
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, JosErHS. ROGERS, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing-fat Greenville, in the countvfofButler'and State of Alabama, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Double PloWS, f which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in plows, and the primary object of the invention is to furnish a duplex shovel which may be placed on a single stock: plow to do the work ordinarily accomplished by a double stock plow.
A. further object oi the invention is to provide the improved duplex shovel with means to permit a drag-board to be attached to the same. I
Another object of the invention is to so shape the duplex shovel that the-shovel por tions of the same will set accurately for proper working and facilitate its attachment to the ordinary heel bolt ofthe plow foot.
With the foregoing objects outlined' and with other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds the invention consists in'the novel features hereinafter described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and moreparticularly pointed out in the appended claim.
li'eterring to the drawing: 1
Figure 1 is perspective view of the improved dupleX shovel showing the same attached to an ordinary single stock plow.
Fig- 2 is a top plan view of the same.
3 is a side view.
Fig. l is a frontview of the improved shovel.
in the drawings, 1 designates a plow beam provided at itsrear end with. two handles 2. A toot member is secured to the beam by means of U-bolts 4. The construction so far described is the same as that of an ordinary single stock plow and this forms no part'ot the present invention. To the foot member 3 is attached the improved duplex shovel 5, which is secured in place by means of the heel bolt 6 that passes through the heel portionof the foot member 3. The duplex shovel is formed of asingle piece of metal of U shape and the legs of the U-shaped member terminate in shovel portions 7. The legs incline outwardly and downwardly fromthelrf inner edges 10 to their outer edgesll and thus the edges 10 function to cut the soil wardlylby the legs as the plow advances.
It will be noted thatthe cross-head p0r- M011 8 of the member 5 is curved upwardly i and this soil is guided outwardly a d i r The leg portions of the member 5 are pronish-a duplex shovel which may be attached to any make of plow stock ordinarily employed by the farmer.
The duplex shovel eliminates the necessity tatoes, cane, etc., and may be used also in cultlvating the above mentioned plants, just 7 as they are coming up and begin to grow;
' The plow may also be used in truck growing such-as bedding up beds for planting small .seeds such astruck growers use.
more, the duplex shovel may be manufactured with less expense than the double plow stock and may be handled much easier than Furtherof employing double plow stocks, and does I the double stock. The double stock now in use is a very ditlicult plow tokeep in shape and is very unhandy toexport. For instance, .if a farmer has a portion of land that he desires to plant in peanuts and this land lies at a distance across his plantation,
he has to hitch his team up to his wagon to take his single stock and double stock over to do the work. With a: single plow stock he prepares the land for planting, drops the .7
seed, and then he has to unhitch from the single plowstock and hitch to the double plow stock to cover the peanuts.- With the improved duplex shovel for the same work it would be unnecessary to transport the double stock at all, as the farmer could place his single stock plow and a duplex shovel" on the back oi one horse and upon arriving at thepluee of planting he could first operate with the single plow and then substitute the duplex shovel for the shovel'of the single stock and completethe work; thus be seen that the improved duplex shovel may be advantageously employed with a single plow stockj p It is believed from theforegoing description taken in connection with the drawing that the construction and operation of the duplex shovel may be readily understood.
What is claimedand desired to be secured by Letters-Patent is: I
A duplex plowshare consisting of afU- t will shaped metallic member formed of a single piece of lnbtitl and including a cross-head and leg members terminating in pointed shovel portions, the cross-head being con- ,cavo-convex 1n 1ts longitudlnal'direetion and beinginelined transversely from its rear edge downwardly towards its front edge, the
ends of the cross-head being lower than the Central-portion ot' the cross-head and mergmg into the leg members, and each of said shovel'portions being coneavo-convex in its JOSEPH SCOTT ROGERS.
