Description

' W. W. ADAMS INDICATOR FOR PUNCHING MACHINES Filed April 25. 1922 jn'ue'nh; WiUiamWAdams.
Patented Oct. 9, 1223.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM W. ADAMS, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT 01' COLUMBIA.
INDICATOR FOR PUhl'GHIlilG: MACHINES.
Application filed April 25, 1922. Serial No. 556,421.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Imrovements in Indicators for Punching achines, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention relates to an indicator for card punching machines and it is an object of the same to provide indicating means which shall show clearly and without waste of time the column in which the card is to be punched.
A further object. of the invention is to provide an attachment which may readily be aflixed to any of the punching machines now in use'by unskilled labor without the necessity of any serious alteration.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which are made a art hereof and on which similar reference c aracters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is a plan of a punching machine of conventional'type with my improvement added thereto, and
Figure 2 a side view of the card means andindicator.
In the drawings reference character 10 indicates generally the base of a punching machine having thereon a support 11 for a bank of-keys 12. A card to be punched is laid on the base and is pushed along underneath the keys by a finger 13 reaching down into a slot 14 and having on its forward face a horizontal slot 15 to engage over the edge of the card. A thumb piece punching 16 serves for retracting the finger and its carriage 17. Conventional means are provided for moving the carriage at each actuation of a key and means may also be provided for moving it either step by step or for any desired distance independently of'any key actuation.
As a part of my improvement I provide a flat curved bar 18 attached at its'lower end to the carriage 17 by screws 19 and extendin upwardly and rearwardly and then towar the opposite end of the machine, the horizontal part being provided with threaded openings to receive three thumb screws 20 which a card 21-which 1s a duplicate of the one pass through openings in to be unched and securethe same to the bar. t will be understood that thls card support may be made in various forms and still fall within the scope of my invention.
18 and 1 may provide a grating or a solid plate at the end side of the card to hold it up if this be necessary. At its left-hand end the support 11 has an enlargement 22, under which the punching action takes place and I have provided a finger 23 at the forward end of this enlargement with a pointed end extending substantially to the top of the card to indicate the headings at the upper ends of the columns of numerals ordinarily found on such cards. In this way the pointer will extend over the vertical row of numerals indicating not only the particular row but the heading at the top of the column without necessitating any loss of time in verifying the position of the indicator.
- It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that my improvements may be modified in various ways without departing from the spirit of the invention the true scope of which is indicated in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination of a card punching machine, means for punching a card and means to move the card relative to said punching means, means extending away from the machine for supporting a duplicate card, means for moving the duplicate card in step with said card to be punched said duplicate card being wholly in view of the operator at all times and a pointer to indicate on the duplicate card, the position of the other card relative to the punching means, substantially as set forth.
2. A card punching machine comprisin punching means means for moving a car into position to be punched, means for supporting a visible duplicate card above the machine and means for moving the duplicate card in time with said first card and a pointer indicating the position "of the first card relative to the punching means, substantially as set forth.
3. A card punching machine comprising punching means, a carria e for moving a card to be punched relativfiy to said punching means, an arm extending upward and forward from said carriage, means on said the inclined part of bar' keys for operating said punching devices,
the duplicate card and serving to indicate the position of the punching means relative to the card to" be punched, substantially as set forth.
4;. A card punching machine having a carriage for moving a card to be punched, punching devices on the fixed'fraine in aline- 'ment with the vertical columns on the card,
a pointer extending rearwardly from the frame and in line with the row of punching devices, an arm extending rearwardly and forwardly from said carriage and a duplicate card suspended iro n said arm beneath 4 the pointer and adapted to move adjacent said pointer with its columns in alinement with those of the card to be punched, sub stantially as set forth.
5. An attachment for a card punching machine having a card carrying carriage and card punching means, comprising a support for a duplicate card said support extending rearwardly and forwardly of. the machine whereby the entire duplicate card is exposed in View of the operator during the punchin operation, and means for indicating on the duplicate card the relative position of the punching means and the card being punched, substantially as set forth.
In Witness whereof, I have. hereunto set my hand and seal at Washington, District of Columbia, this 25th day of April, A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty-two.
