To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PETER ToPFNER, a citizen of Hungary, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trousers Protectors, which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to garment protectors and has for its object the provision of a protector designed to be associated with trouser legs whereby to protect and keep dry the portions thereof which extend below a rain-coat or other similar garment.

An important and more specific object is the provision of a protector of this character which is formed with permanent creases designed to receive the creases at the front and back of trouser legs whereby to prevent the trousers from being wrinkled when the protectors are applied, the permanent creases in the protectors furthermore giving a pleasing appearance.

Another object is the provision of adevice of this character which is so constructed that it may be folded into a very small bundle and be carried within an auxiliary pocket which will be carried in the raincoat pocket or directly within a coat pocket or other receptacle.

Another object is the provision of a protector of this character which is provided with means whereby it may be readily secured to the trouser legs with very little effort and in a very short time.

An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, highly eflicient in use. neat in appearance, durable in service and a general improvement in the art.

With the above and other objects and advantages in View, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the letter A designates a pair of trousers with which my device is to be worn and B designates the skirt of a raincoat.

In carryingout my invention I provide for each trouser leg, a guard or protector which is formed of two similar pieces 11 of suitable water-proof material stlt'ched or otherwise secured together along one edge as indicated at 12. The upper end of the piece of material 11 is cut-out in a V-shape as indicated at 13 and the edges of this cutaway portion are turned in and stitched as indicated at 14. It is also preferable to provide gussets 15 at, these cut-away por tions for reinforcing purposes and to prevent tearing. The opposite ends of the assembled pieces 11 are turned up and stitched to provide hems 16 which constitute the bottom of the protector.

The opposite side edges. that is the free edges of the pieces of material 11 are preferably slightly inclined as shown so that when the protector is applied it will be somewhat tapered in shape to conform to the shape of trouser legs. One of these free edges is provided with a reinforcing strip 17 of canvas or other flexible material upon which are secured the female elements 18 of snap fasteners while the other free edge is also preferably provided with a.- similar strip 19 carrying the male elements 20 of the fasteners. This second edge may be formed with a flap 21 designed to underlie the first mentioned free edge.

Each piece of material 11 is formed centrally with a permanent crease 22 which extends from the vertex of the V-shapetl cut-away portion to the hem 16. The purpose of the permanent creases 22 is to accommodate the creases in the trouser legs so as to prevent rumpling of the trousers and also so as to present a pleasing and finished appearance.

In order that the pretector may be secured in place upon the trouser legs I provide a pair of oppositely disposed safety-pin like devices 23, one of which is secured at the upper end of the edge 17 and the other of which is secured at the upper end of the scam 12 as clearly shown.

The protectors are used by placing them around the trouser legs and securing them in position by means of the safety-pin members 23 which are inserted through the trousers side seams and fastened. The front and rear creases of the trousers will of course be accommodated within the permanent creases 22 of the device so that rumpling will be avoided. It is to be noted that L118 prosuitable pocket or case which may be cartied in the rain-coat pocket or any other pocket. 'hen the protectors are folded up and carried in this pocket it is of course apparent that they will not be in the way and may be easily carried about in a readily accessible position while at the same time they will be kept clean so that their appearance will not at any time be disfigured. It is apparent that when the protectors are in applied position upon the trouser legs they will effectively operate to prevent the trousers from becoming wet from rain which may blow in under or below the rain coat as well as protecting the trousers against being muddied, wetted or injured in case it is necessary for the wearerto walk through tall grass or bushes.

One of the very important features of the present device is the provision of the creases at the front and back of the trouser legs which not only operate to void massing or rumpling the trousers but which will also give the same appearance as if the trousers themselves were exposed to view instead of the protector. Another "feature of vital importance is the fact that the front and back of each leg protector is cut away in a V-shape so that thedevice will not interfere with the knee action and will therefore not be drawn out of shape while the wearer is walking or in casethe wearer has occasion'to step up.

From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be readily apparent that I have thus provided an extremely sim- 'ple and consequently inexpensive protector which will be highly advantageous for use in protecting trousers in bad weather, the protector being of distinct advantage in preserving the pleasing appearance of the trousers as well as preventing injury thereto without in any way departing from the neatness-of appearance.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.

A protector of the character described comprising a sheet of flexible material provided at its free edgeswith inter-engaging snap-fastener elements and provided at its lower portion with ahem, the upper portion of the sheet beirg formed with a spaced cutaway V-shaped portions within which are located gussets, the sheet of material being formed wit-h spaced permanent creases extending from the lower point of the V- shaped cut-away portions to and throughout the hem, and securing members carried by ihe sheet at the highest pointsof the cutaway portions and adapted for penetrating engagement with trouser legs, the V-shaped cut-away portions being disposed at the front and back of the knee so as to permit free knee movement without causing dislocation of the protector.
