Be it known that I, CHnis'rIANSrnnN- sTRUi', a citizen of the United States,` residing at Schenectady, county ot Schenectady, State oi New York, have inventeiilcertain new and useful lmprovemcms in `Elastic- F luid Turbines, of whichk the followingr isa specification. 1 :i i
The present invention relates to elastic `fluid turbines and has for its object to pro-` vide an improved structure and arrangement Afor fastening the bucket or vane ring ori-ings on the bucket-carrying member or wheel. i

The buckets are permanently and rigidly iXed to the wheel rim by Jfusion of metal, as by welding` bracing* or the like f and any suitable method may be used tor this. although I prefer to fasten the ybuckets to the wheel rim by the method disclosed and claimed in my application, Serial 354,014, filed January 26, 1920. This method comprises placing the assembled` structure in a suitable muffler containing' areducinp; atmosphere such as hydrogen and heating` it, an alloying metal such as copper having, been previously placed adjacent tothe joints between the parts to be united. When heated to a'suitable temperature, the copper enters the interstices between the parts and Spacing blocks l0 may be formed by cutting transverse slots in the outer portion of rib 9, while the ribitseli'' may be formed by turning down the outer portion of rim 6. These are. simple machineoperations which can be easily and yaccurately performed. I then take buckets 7, as best shown at the lett hand side of F l, and arrange them around the` wheel, inserting` a bucket' between each two spacing blocks 10. As is clear, buckets. 7 are formed Jfrom plain bucket stock, such as strips of extruded metal, or they may be drop forged, and they require no specially shaped or finished bases.
All that required is that they be proviiiled with the notches il and tenons 1Q. After vthe buckets are assembled on the wheel, spacing;` blocks lOare expanded circumerentially by calking them on the top so as to 'Force them into irm engagement with the buckets and they may bite into the buckets, as shown in Fig. 2, in which ligure the blocks l() are shown as havingy been calked into engagement with the buckets. At the same time the buckets are driven in radially so their bottoms are in` firm engagement with surface 8. After the buckets are thus assembled on the wheel, the bucket cover may be put` yinto place and the buckets, wheel, and cover all united by fusion ot metal as already relerred to. lWhen thus fastened, the buckets are l{irmly` held both laterally and circumferentially andare accurately positioned.

With my .improved zii-rangement, the buckets may be quickly assembled on the wheel .by relatively unskilled help and it is to be noted that no lilling slots are required and that there are no inside surfaces to be iinished and carefully dimensioned.

I/Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is l. In an elastic fluid turbine, the combination of a bucket carrying meinber having a fla-t peripheral surface, an annular rib eX- tending ,around said surface and provided with spacing blocks, and bucketslocated between said blocks, said buckets having notches'which receive the rib.
, 2. In combination, a bucket-carrying member having a rim provided with a flat peripheral surface and spacing blocks projecting therefrom, and buckets having their inner ends located between said blocks and in engagement With said flat surface.
3. In combination, a bucket-carryingl member having a rim provided With a flat peripheral surface and spacing blocks projecting therefrom, and buckets having their inner ends located between said blocks and in engagement with said flat surface, said buckets being fastened to said flat surface and blocks by fusion of metal.
4. In combination, member having a rim provided with a flat peripheral surface and an annular rib projecting therefrom, and buckets having ends a bucket-carrying y in engagement with said flat surface and notches in which said rib lits, said buckets being fastened to said rim and rib by fusion of metal.
5. In combination, a bucket-carrying member having a rim provided With a fiat peripheral surface and an annular rib projecting therefrom, and buckets having ends in engagement With said flat surface and notches in which said rib fits, said rim being slotted to receive the buckets to space them circumferentially.
6. In combination, a bucket-carrying member having a rim provided With a flat peripheral surface and an annular rib projecting therefrom, and buckets having ends in engagement with said flat surface and notches in which said rib fits, said rim being slotted to receive the buckets to space them circumferentially, said buckets, rim and rib being fastened together by fusion of metal.
7. In combination, a bucket-carrying member having a rim provided with a Hat peripheral surface and an annular rib hav# ing straight sides, and buckets having` ends 1n engagement With said flat surface and lnotches the sides of Which engage the straight sides of said rib, said buckets being fastened to said rib and rim by fusion of metal.
