Description
Patented (let. 2, 19233.
To; all whom it may coflmm:
Be it lmown that T. JAMES a citizen of the United- States, residing at Camden, in the county offlamdenand State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Wrench, of which the. following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this invention is adapted to grip internally, nipples and the like to the end that the nipples or other objects may be threaded out of any part with which they are assembled.
The invention aims to provide novel means for operating and controlling and mounting the element which immediately grips the nipple or other object to be held.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings t Figure 1 shows in side elevation, a device constructed in accordance withthe invention; Figure 2 is a longitudinal section wherein parts appear in elevation; Figure 3 is a cross section on the line 33 of Figure 2; Figure 4 is a cross section on the line t tt of Figure 2.
In carrying out the invention there is provided an elongated body 1 equipped at one end with flat surfaces 2 adapted to receive a wrench or the like, the body 1 being provided, at said end. with flat surfaces which are longer than the flat surfaces 2., the surfaces 3 being disposed at right angles to the surfaces 2, and being adapted to be received in a vise, or the like. to the end that the tool may be held fixedly, should it be desired to hold the tool, rather than to rotate it. The body 1 has a trough-shaped extension 4 provided with inclined edges 5. A bore 6 is formed in I RENCH.

The grip has a longitudinal rib 10 received slidably in that portion of the bore 6 which is located in the extension 1. The rib 10 is provided with an internal slot 11 receiving the flattened end 31 of a connection 12, preferably in the form of a rod, the connection 12 being located in the bore 6. is mounted in the rib 10 and extends transversely of the slot 11, the flattened end 81 of the connecting rod 12 being mounted on the pivot element 14.
The numeral 15 marks a'nut having a refducedneck 16 carrying a spherical head 1 ternal ridges 50, enhancing the hold of a tool on the nut, although, if desired, the nut may be manipulated by hand. a bore 18, into which one end of the rod 12 is threaded, as shown at 19. Cap pieces 20 are attached by securing elements-21 to the end of the body 1 and are supplied with seats 22 complemental to the seat 7 in the body 1, the spherical head 17 of the nut 1.5 being mounted to rock in the seats 7 and 22. s t
In practical operation, when the nut 15 is rotated, the connection rod 12 will be moved longitudinally, and the grip 8 will be moved longitudinally, the grip 8 also moving transversely, because the grip slides on the inclined edges 5 of the troughshaped The nut 15 may be provided with eX-' The nut 15 has a 1 pecan A pivot element 14: I
lVhat is claimed is 1. A device of the class described comprising a body having an inclined edge; a grip mounted to slide on said edge; a nut mounted to rock on the body; a connection threaded into the nut; and means for uniting the connection with the grip.
2. In a device of the class described, a body having an extension provided with an inclined edge, the body being supplied with a bore prolonged into the extension; a grip mounted to slide on said edge of the extension and including a rib extended into that portion of the bore which is located in the extension; a rod located in the bore and pivotally connected with the rib; a nut including "a spherical head mounted to rock on the body; and a rod, one end of the rod being pivotally connected with the grip, the other end of the rod being threaded into the nut, the rod being located in the bore.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I'have hereto aflixed, my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
JAMES F. ASTLEY.
