CUTTER.
' Application filed March 19, 1921. Serial No. 453,552.7.` f
To all whom t 02mg/ C20/rivera.'l x
Be it known that we, Pii'rnr. R. Snmir and liinMoN'r W. Sunni, citizens of the United,
States, residing at .Ephrata, inthe county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, haver invented new and useful Improvements in Cuttersof which the following is a speci-` fication. j
This invention relates to the revolving reversible thimble for a cigar cutter, the `principal object of the invention being to pro--` Avide means for smoothing the head of a cigar while the tuck is being cut off.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the thimble can be rotated in either direction so that it can be` used on a cigar which has been wrapped in a right or left hand direction.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction `and in the combination and arrangement of the sev-` eral parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying p drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims. Y
In describing our invention in detail, refence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which 2- i Figure 1 isa plan view of the invention.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view.`
Figure 3 is a view looking towards one end of the apparatus.
Figure i is a view looking towards the other end.
Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Figure 1.
"In these views 1 indicates a casing the to i of which is provided with a longitudinal groove 2 and the end 3 of which is provided with a recess i which is designed to act as one part of the cutting means.
' is rotatably mounted in the casing and this shaft passes through one end of the casing and this projecting end` has secured thereto a knife 6 which cooperates with the recess 4 to cut the tuck off. A spring 7 is secured to this shaft and a part of the casing and acts to return the knife to raised position.
The end of the casing opposite the knife carrying end is provided with an upwardly projecting extension in which isv journaled the shaft 9. A frame 10 is secured to said shaft within the extension and a thimble 11` is also secured to that part of the shaft,
A shaft 5 17 are arranged within'the cas`i.ng,.oneof Y thesel gears 17 being arranged on shaft 5 and is connected to saidshaft by the ratchet mechanism 18. i i
The parts are so arranged that when the knife 6 is depressed to cut the tuck off the cigar which has been placed in the groove 2 in the easing with its head in the thimble and its tuck end in the recess 1, the rotation of shaft 5 will, through the ratchet mechanism, the gears 17 and 17 andthe gear 15 or 15 Cause shaft 9 to rotate through pinion 16 and thus the thimble will be rotated to i smooth the head of the cigar. When the knife is released after the cutting` operation the spring will return the shaft 5 and` said knife to normal position but the thimble will not be rotated in this retrograde position Ldue to the ratchet mechanism. i
Tf the cigar has been wrapped in an opposite direction the thimble must be rotated in this direction and to secure this rotation of the thimble it is simply necessary to tilt the gear frame 1() by means of the rod 13 and its nut 14: working in the slot 12 to bring the other gear 15 or 15 into engage-` make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the sever-` al parts, provided that `such changes fall `within the scope of they appended claims.
What we claim is: 1. A device of the class deserlbed comprismg a casing, cutting means thereon,` a
i i We desire it to be understood that we may y thimble for engaging the head of the cigar,
means for revolving the thimble by the action of the cutting means, such means including means for reversing the rotation of the thimble when desired.
2. A device of the class described comprising a casing, cutting means at one end thereof, Va thimble at the other end, means for rotating the thimble by the cutting action of the cutting means, such means including means for reversing the rotation of the thimble when desired and means for returning the cutting means to normal position Without rotating thethimble.
vAn apparatus of the class described comprising a casing, a shaft jonrnaled therein and having a part projecting' from one ,end of the casing, 'a knife connected with said pro jecting end,'spring means connected With the shaft for holding the knife in raised position7 a thimble at the other end of the casing, gearing connecting the thimble With the sha-ft, ratchet mechanism associated With the gearing for actuating thetllnmble on the cutn ting movement of the knife but permitting the spindle to remain idle when the spring returns the knife to normal position.
et. An apparatus of theclass described coniprising a casing, a shaft journaled therein and having a part projecting from oneend of the casing, a knife connected With said projecting end, spring means connected With the shaft for holding the knife in raised position7 a thimble at the other end of the cas ing, gearing connecting the thimble with the shaft, ratchet mechanism associated with the gearing for actuating' Ithe thimble on the cutting movement of the knife but permitting the spindle to remain idle when the spring returns the knife to normal position and means for changing the Vposition of the gearing for reversing the direction oflmovement of the thimble when desired.
In testimony whereof We affix our signatures.
