Be it known that I, GoMMMnn RACHARD, whose post-odio@ address is 504 East 17th Street, New York, N. Y., a subject of the King of Belgium, residino' at New York, in the county and Stateof aew York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Twin-Head Boring Bars; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andfexact `description of the invention, such as will'enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked'thereon, whichforni a part of this application.
My invention relates to a novel construction ofboring bar or holder for boring tools for use in connection with lathes, boring mills, shapers and other metal working nia chines.
The invention. has for its principal object to provide a simple strong, and durable construction of iboring bar or holder, provided at its free end with a novel arrangement and inter-association of tool seating sockets or openingsa whereby the tool may be selectively positioned to project at a desired` given angle relative to t-he axis of bar or holder, together with a simply and easily operated means for rigidly clamping the tooi in aselected position; all to the end that the cutting tool may be rigidly supported and held against undue vibration, `and yet sub` ject, by simple manipulation of the clamping: devices, to interchangeable disposition with? out necessity of removing the bar or holder from its set or fixed relation to the machine in which it is being used, while nevertheless rendering it very easy to bring'the cutting edge of the tool indesired relation tothe work boing done.

Referring to the drawings, the reference character a indicates the main body of the bar or holder. llhis main body is tubular in form, `so that a central longitudinal clamp rod o may extend forwardly therethrough from its'rear end. rlhe rear end of the bore of said tubular main body ais provided with internal screw threads 7c into which is threaded a set screw Z to engage the rear end of said'clamp rod b. In like manner, provided in the wall of said bar or holder a, on the same side with the opening or seat g but spaced rearwardly therefrom, is a second rectangular opening or seat i, the forward and rear sides of which are disposed at 45 degree angles relative to the longitudinal aXis of the bar or holder a. Formed in the wall of said bar or holder a, on the opposite side from that `in which said openings or seats g and h are disposed, is a third rectangular opening or seat f which is opposed to the opening or seat g and also to the openingor seat h. rlhe forward and rear sides of said opening or seat f are disposed at 45 degreeangies relative to the longitudinal axis of the bar or holder a, and the forward side thereof is an alinement with the forward side of the opening or seat h, while the rear side thereof is in alinement with the rear side of the opening or seat L. The inner transverse edge portion of the forward side of the opening or seat f is alined with the forward side of the opening or seat g, while the outer transverse edge portion of said forward side of the opening or seat f is alined with the forward side of the opening or seat it, thus providing a 90 degree seating face in the same plane as said forward side of the opening or seat g, and a i5 degree seating face in the same plane as said side of the opening or seat L. The outer transverse edge of the rear side of the opening or seat f is alined with the rear side of the opening or seat g. From the above description of the location, arrangement and interrelation of said openings or seats g, t and f, it will be evident that a suitable cutting tool E may be selectively7 arranged in operative relation tothe bar or holder a for projection therefrom at a 45 degree angle, by passingthe tool through the opening or seat 7L so that its forward end passes outwardly between the angular forward and rear sides of the opening or seat f, as shown in Figure 5; or the tool maybe arranged forprojection from the side of the bar or holder a at a 9() degree angle`r by passing the tool through the opening or seat g, so that its forward end passes outwardly through the opening or seat f, between the inner transverse edge portion of the forward side and the outer transverse edge of the rear side of said latter opening or seat, as shown in Figure G.
Then the cutting tool is disposed for a i5 degree angle of projection, the setscrew d is screwed home against the rear end of the clamp yrod thereby thrusting the latter forward to carry its face against the body of the tool E, thus rmly clamping the same against movement relative to the bar or holder a, as is also illustrated in Figure 5.
When the cutting tool is disposed for a 90 degree angle of projection, the set screw ci is screwed home against the rear end of the clamp rod Z), thereby thrusting the latter forward to carry its face z' against the body of the tool E, thus -iirmly clamping the latter in such position, as is also illustrated in Figure-6 of the drawings.
It will be quite clear, that if it is desired to change the position of the tool E from one angle of proj-ection to the other, such change may be effected without disturbing the connection of the bar or holder a in the machine in which the saine is mounted. All that it is necessary to do is to relax the set-screw d so that the tool E is relieved from the bite of the clamp-rod b, and then withdraw the tool E from the one position and again insert the same in the other position relative to the openings or seats g, frv and f, as the case may be, and then again thrust forward the clamp-rod b to biting or clamping position.
From the above description it will be apparent that my invention provides a very simple arrangement whereby the tool may be selectively associated with the bar or holder at a desired angle of projection, and then firmly and rigidly held against undue vibration during the cutting operations by the novel arrangement and cooperation of the tool supporting and clamping elements of the device.
Having thus described my invention, I claim l. In a device of the kind described, a main body having a longitudinal bore internally threaded at its rearward end, the wall of said main body being provided at one side adjacent to its forward end with tool receiving openings spaced longitudinally one from the other, one of said openings having spaced forward and rear sides disposed at an angle of 90 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis of the main body, the second of said openings having spaced forward and rear sides disposed at an angle of Li5 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis of the main body,the wall of said main body being further provided at its opposite side with a third tool receiving opening having spaced forward and rear sides disposed at an angle of 4:5 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis of the main body and alined respectively with the forward and rear sides of the second opening, said third opening being so disposed that the inner transverse edge of its forward side and the outer transverse edge of its rear side are respectively alined opposite the forward and rear sides of said first opening, a clamp bar extending forwardly through the bore of V said main body, and a set screw threaded in the rear end of said main body to thrust said clamp bar into operative holding engagen'ient with a tool selectively positioned relative to said tool receiving openings.
2. In a device of the kind described, a main body having a longitudinal bore internally threaded at its rearward end, the wall of said main body being provided at one side adjacent to its forward end with tool receiving openings spaced longitudinally one from the other, one of said openings having spaced forward and rear sides disposed at an angle of 9() degrees relative to the longitudinal axis of the main body, the second of said openings having spaced forward and rear sides disposed at an angle of degrees relative to the longitudinal axis of the main body, the wall of said main body being` further provided at its opposite side with a third tool receiving opening having spaced forward and rear sides disposed at an angle of 45 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis of the main body and alined respectively with the forward and rear sides of the second opening, said third opening being so disposed that the inner transverse edge of its forward side of the outer transverse edge of its rear side are respectively alined opposite the forward and rear sides of said first opening, a clamp bar extending forwardly through the bore of said main body, a set screw threaded in the rear end of said main body to thrust said clamp bar into operative holding engagement with a tool'selectively positioned relative to said tool receiving openings, and the forward biting end of said clamp bar having two tool engaging faces, one of said faces being 1n .a plane at an angle of 90 degrees to the longitudinal axis of said main body, and the other of said faces being in a plane at an angle of 45 degrees to the longitudinal axis of said main body.
3. ln a device of the kind described, a main body having a longitudinal bore internally threaded at its rearward end, the wall of said main body being provided at one side adjacent to its forward end with tool receiving openings spaced longitudinally one from the other, one of said openings having spaced forward and rear sides disposed at an angle of 9() degrees relative to the longitudinal axis of the main body, the second of said openings having spaced forward and rear sides disposed at an angle of 45 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis of the main body, the wall of said main body being further provided at its opposite side with a third tool receiving opening having spaced forward and rear sides disposed at an angle of 45 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis of the main body and alined respectively with the forward and rear sides of the second opening, said third opening being so disposed that the inner transverse edge of its forward side and the outer transverse edge of its rear side are respectively alined opposite the forward and rear sides of said first opening, a clamp bar extending forwardly through the bore of said main body, a sct screw threaded in the rear end of said main body to thrust said clamp bar into operative holding engagement with a tool selectively positioned relative to said tool receiving openings, the forward biting end of said clamp bar having two tool engaging faces, one of said faces being in a plane at an angle of 90 degrees to the longitudinal axis of said main body, and the other of said faces being in a plane at an angle of 45 degrees to the longitudinal axis of said main body, and means to preyeicilt rotation of said clamp bar in said main 4. 5. ln a device of the kind described, a tubular main body having in its wall at one side adiacent to its forward end tool re ceiving openings, one of which permits a tool to pass therethrough at right angles to the longitudinal axis of said main body while the other permits a tool to pass therethrough at a lesser angle, said main body having in its wall at the opposite side a third tool receiving opening so shaped and disposed as to permit the extension of a tool therethrough when extending from either of said first mentioned openings, and means for clamping a tool when selectively extended through said tool receiving openings, co1nprising a clamp-bar extending forwardly through the bore of said tubular main body. and a set screw threaded into the rear end of said main body to actuate said clamp-bar.
