Be it known that l, MAURICE LAGHMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Kin Metal lroles, of which the following is a specilication.
My present invention relates to the construction of tapered metal poles such as telegraph, telephone or other transmission line poles.
rlfhe object of the invention is to simplify the construction of these poles and particularly of such poles as require practically the same strength from all sides.
To these ends l employ a minimum number of parts to construct the pole as a whole and provide a rolled tapered metal section having side flanges for each part or member.
In the preferred form ofthe invention all the parts employed in the structure are duplicates of each other and each is a tapered channel section constructed from standard rolled metal shapes. In this way the pole may be shipped knock-down and by nesting the parte small space is required for storage or shipping. ,g rThe invention consists in the construction of metal pole hereinafter more particularly described and then specified in the claims. ln the accompanying drawings, Fig. l is a side elevation of a tapered metal pole constructed in accordance with this invention.

ln the preferred embodiment of the invention the pole proper comprises a middle member and two side members, one on each side of and secured to the middle member. rlhese members are preferably made up of but four duplicate parts or units and each part or unit is formed from rolled channel shaped sections of any desired standard size.
Each part is tapered from end to end and consists of two longitudinally divided lengths of metal 1,2 (see Figs. l and 5) each having a flange 3. The lengths are secured together along the jointe by spot welding,
riveting or otherwise. These parts are f formed as shown and described in my prior application led March 22nd, 1920, Serial No. 367,739 by taking a rolled section or sections of flanged bars and separating theL web by a bias cut, then reversing the relation of the `parts and securing them together thereby forming a tapered danged length of metal.
`To form the middle member 5 of the pole l preferably take two of these tapered chani nel sections and arrange them back to back,
riveting them together if desired. lf preferred this middle member may be constructed from an I-beam section.
Each side section 6, 7 is seated against the flanges 3 of the middle member and secured thereto in any desired way, riveting preferred. rlhe middle member 5 is preferably arranged down the center of the side members 6 and 7 so that in cross-section the pole forms an ll.
lf desired the side members 6 and 7 may also be formed from an lbeam section instead of a channel in which case there will be a double flange at each `longitudinal edge of the pole. Also if desired to lighten the pole or for ornamental purposes part-s of the webs of the members may be removed ac.- cording to any desired design.
By following this invention a tapered pole having any desired spread of base as well as equal strength from all sides may be constructed in the most economical manner.
