Be it known that l, WILLIAM H. Rosa, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, Hudson County, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful llmprovements in Containers, of `which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to containers 4and particularly to a container having walls of paper or other fibrous material and metallicV closures for the ends ofthe same. j
The object oi the invention is to provide a construction in which lthe walls of the container may be made heavy and rigid and in which the heads or closures for the same are rmly and permanently'attached to the walls of the container. particularly useful where large containers or `barrels are required for the packing orl transportation of material since it provides 'a construction in which the walls may be made thick and heavy so as to be strong and durable and in whichthe heads `are very securely fastened -to the walls.
The invention is set forth in detail in the following speciication and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

The body .of the container forming the subject matter of the' present invention is made up of two portions, an inner cylindrical wall l() and an outer cylindrical wall 11. 'lhese walls, as illustrated in the drawing are made heavy so as to maintain their form during. severe usage and to offer substantial resistance -to any side thrusts. rll`he tubes or members composing the walls 10i and 11 are preferably formed separately and assembled by insertingI one within the other. lf desired the outer wall 11 may be formed by wrapping paper material around the inner wall as described in my copending Preferably the tubes l0 and 11 are glued together, the

glue being applied to one or both of the tubes before they are assembled. It is apparent that the tubes maybe made of any thickness desired and when assembled and glued together as stated a very strong and rigid construction is produced.
With thebody of the container constructed as described, the heads or closures for the container may be secured in position in a very eective manner, and so arranged as to cover and protect the ends of the tubes 10 and 11. To this end the heads or closures 12 are applied to each end of the container, each of these heads being provided with a Harige 13 which is `arranged between the outer and inner walls of the container and with a flange 12a which is preferably made of suiicient width to overlie the ends of the outer wall 11. The heads 12 may also be provided with any desired form of opening 12b to which a cover may be applied.
For securing the flanges 13 of the heads in position between the walls 10 and 11 various means may be employed. lin the form of construction illustrated in Figure 1 the flange 13 is provided with outwardly projecting inclined prongs 14 which extend toward the base or inner end ofthe ange. rlhis particular construction oi prongs is also illustrated in Figure 8 of the drawing. lt will be apparentr that where the flanges 13 of the closures are provided with prongs of this character the anges may be inserted /betrveen the inner and outer walls l() and 11 after said walls are assembled, and when `thus inserted, the prongs` 14 will engage and embed themselves more or less in the ma` terial of the outer wall 11.
lf desired the prongs on the anges 13 may be arranged to project inwardly and engage the inner wall 1() as illustrated at 15 in Figure 2.
llt is, or course, apparent that the prongs on the anges 1" may beso arranged that one series will project inwardly and the other outwardly as illustratedat 16 and 16a in Figure 3, the former engagingthe outer wall 11 and the latter the inner wall 10.
A somewhat different arrangement for securing the Hange in position between the walls is illustrated in Figure 4 in which the Bange is provided with a series of inwardly inclined prongs 18 and with a series of openings 17 preferably arranged as illustrated in Figure 9. The prongs 18 will engage and embed themselves in the material forming the inner wall 10, while the openings 17 will serve as additionalsecurmg means by reason of the fact that the glue employed between the inner and outer walls 10 and 11 will enter these openings and thus tend to lock the flange in position between the walls.
In the construction shown in Figure 5, the flange 13 is provided with a series of openings 17 such as illustrated in'Figure 9 and in addition thereto a series of outwardly projecting inclined prongs 19 is similar to the prongs 14 of Figure 1.,
Figure 6 illustrates a further modified construction in which the flange 13 is provided only with the openings 17. As :1 1- ready pointed out with a construction of lthis kind the glue will enter the openings 7 and serve to lock the lflange 13 in position between thewalls 10 and 11. In some cases such openings alone will therefore form sufficient securing means for holding the heads in position on the container. I
ln Figure 7 there is illustrated a combination of all the various securing means heretofore described, the flange in this form of construction being provided with openings 17 and with outwardly projecting in `clined prongs and upwardly projecting inclined prongs 21.
By the construction herein described, it is possible to produce containers which are very strong and capable of resisting any ordinary usage to which they are subjected even when constructed to contain large quant1t1es of material and the var1ous arrangements for securing the heads or closures in position being arranged between the two heavy walls of the container are more or less protected from injury and serve to very securely close the ends of the container.
Having thus described-myinvention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A container having a cylindrical body formed of a heavy inner tube of paper material and a heavy' outer tube of paper material surrounding andl closely fitting the innervtube, a metallic closure for said container having a flange positioned between said tubes, said flange having a series of outwardly projecting prongs adapted to engage and embed themselves in the inner surface of said outer tube.
2. A container having a cylindrical body formed of' a heavy inner tube of paper material and a heavy outer tube of paper mate-- rial surrounding and closely fitting the. inner tube, a metallic closure for said container having a' flange positioned between -said tubes, said flange having a series of inwardly inclined prongs adapted to engage and embed themselves in the outer surface ofthe-inner tube.

4. A container having a heavy cylindrical body of paper material formed of a heavy inner tube of paper material and a heavy outer tube of paper material surrounding and closely fitting the inner tube, a metallic closure for said container having a flange positioned between `said tubes, said flange having a series of o enings therein-for receiving glue, whereby said closure is' secured in position on the container.
5. A container having a cylindrical body formed of a heavy-inner tube of paper mat-erial and a heavy outer tube of paper material surrounding and closely fitting the. inner tube, a metallic closure for said container having a fiangepositioned between said tubes, said flange having a series of outwardly projecting prongsadapted to engage and embed themselves in the inner surface of said outer tube, said flange also having a series of openings therein into which glue may How and thereby further secure m0 said flange in position.
6. A container having a cylindrical body formed of a heavy inner tube of paper material and a heavy outer tube of paper mate-- rial surrounding and closely fitting the inner tube, a metallic closure for said container having a flange positioned between said tubes, .said flange having a series of' inwardly inclined prongs adapted to en gage and embed themselves in the outer surface ofthe inner tube, said flange also havlm ing a series of openings therein into which glue may flow and thereby further secure said flange in position.
7. A container having a cylindrical body formed `of a heavy inner tube of paper mate- M5 rial and a heavy outer tube of paper material surrounding and closely fitting the inner tube, a metallic closure for said container having a flange positioned between `said tubes, said flange having 'a series of E20 outwardly inclined prongs and a seriesV of inwardly projecting prongs adapted to engage respeotively the inner slirface of the outer tube and the outer surface of the inner tube, said flange also having a series l2@ of openings therein linto which glue may flow and thereby further secure said flange 1n position. v j 8. A cylindrical container having a body heavy inner tube of paper w@ material and a heavy outer tube of paper material surrounding and closely fitting said inner tube, a metallic closure for the end of said container having a iiange positioned between said tubes, said flange being provided' with means by Which the same is secured in position between said tubes, said closure also `having a flange extending out- Wardly beyond said first named ange and overlying the end of said outer tube.
