" I f it/ones WILLIAM E. Enem es EL iinno; OKLAHOMA. V
teeming; I
Application filed August as, 1922. iserial 01 534397.
T0 (ZZZ/107mm it may concern-.1 v Be it known that I. WILLm 'E: FARLEY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at E1.
Reno, inthe county of Canadian and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ULubric-ators, I of provide a lubricator adapted for thefeeding grease tothe valves of a steam-em of hard gine.
' A: further object lof': the invention is to; provide device ofthis character which isl automatic its'operation in whiph' the lubricating action i s*- continually taking place during running of the engine.
A still further objectof the inventionlis' to provide a device of-thischaracter which is extremely simple andrugge'd in construction and which maybe readily applied to the engine with which it is employed, thus jproviding a device admirably adapted for use upon locomotive engines and the compressor engines of locomotives. l Y I These and other objects I attain by the construction and arrangement'shown in the accompanying drawings '-wherein I for 1 thepurpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and where n like reference characters des'ignate like parts throughout. 7 v In the drawings':'
Figure 1 .is a sectional viewshowing a 111- bricator constructed 'ili:ilCQI'd21IlC8 with my invention and embody-ing'a feeddevic'efor' y I r 7 i side'rable enlargement 246- and beyond this I use with saturated steam;

Thisicapl is "provided with. anaperture .28,- the walls of which E-s'lant; downwardly and" this aperture communicates with thegrbQre 26 of the cap, This bore is of such size that A a spaceis left between the adjacent faces of the Walls'of the bore and the upper face of the control einber 22.
This construction, as hereinbefore stated,
' is particularly adapted for use at the steam chest-s' of'large engines, such as locomotive engine's, employing super-heated steam. As is Well knoWnto thosesfainihar with the art, the shifting of the valve 29 of these en -j gines divides the movement of the steam through the steam chest into periods in which there is no movement and feed-peri ods during which the steam is-passingrapidly into the cylinders 30. ln the operation of this form oi device, during those periods When nosteanr is passing through thestealn chest into the cylinders, theback pressure of thesteam causes steam to pass upwardly through the chest Will create a isuctli-on] through the restricted bore of the control member 22 andact upon the hard'grease vithin the container 1 0 toreduce the same to, liquid and this liquid vill flow into the auxiliary container 20 until the sameis full. During those periods when steam is passing to the cylinders the passage ,otthe steam through the control member 2 2 relieving the pressure Within the container 10 and per; mitting the liquefied grease to'pass down Wardly through the bore cit-the control meinher, and in fact-tending to draw the same therethrough at a fairly rapid rate: It will,
of course, be understood that these opera tions; take place yery rapidly andthat the 7 contents of thechamher 10 will be alternately placed underfhigh pressure and heat a'ndunder suction to form at alltimes a liquefied greasewhich may flow through the bore oi the control member and into .the
steam chest. The shoulders 23 and the pocket orv enlargement 24 of the control member serve to prevent the passage of the steam up- Wardlv through the control member from forcing all. of the liquefied 'grease back intothe container 10. It will, of course be understoo'd' that condensation water "forming Within the container lGjwill raise the level of the hard greasesoas to maintain the grease always in posit on forengagement by T the hot-steam injected through thelcontro'l member-.' 'In' this iforrn it will; be noted-that:
V the container 20 has its- 'maingportion or body disposed" below the intake end; of the controlgmemheri22y-the pnrposeof this construction being toprevent the,Qollection'of a largeamount or the liquefied-grease at the orifice and accordinglyito prevent too large a "quantity of this liquefied grease being drawn intothe valves ofthe engine duringj Q the feedperiod.
In the 'c( nstru'ct1on shown-"in. Figures 1 to3; the controlamember consists of an attaching' element' 'lghaving its lower end threaded for engagement in V thefopening' 142 berfBl and is ot suchl a size that it iis 1 spacedtrom the walls'thereot for a purpose hereinafter to appear. 1 The upper end of the V employing saturated steam which is of low 'hQlliilHQflMfilUB' 2nd which vill not accord-I,

and its upper endi eiiternally threaded for engagement Wltll a reducing element 32.
Seated upon the upper end of the attaching member 31 1s a shoulder 33 formed on awcontrol element 34 corresponding to the control element 22 hereinbei'ore "d scribed, This, control element has its lower end extending downwardly into the attaching me1n control member 34L above the-shoulder 33 is I externally screw threadedfas at 35, for en- 'iliary container is closed by a removable cap 88 havingan orifice 39 aligned waan f bore of thefcontrol member 2A and; enlargedt on ct feed regulator which is interchange: able with the feed regulator hereinhe forede inent forms the lower end of the auxiliary ;chambe r and that acc'ordingly appro'xi-g m a'tely all of the liquefied grease enteringjj the chamber is positioned-to be withdrawn ZfI'QHIihB ch amherduring the steam feeding period.- Thisj is due to the fact that this construction, just;describedis particularly? adapted tornsein conjunction with engines ingly reduce the grease rapidly' enough to i causefthe' surpjlusage 0t liquefied 1 grease ito be withdrawn.forluhricating purposes For the same reason the control memberB le i shown of a size providing aspace between t exterior; surface-'and the inner face otthe all of the at tacl i-ing member-j '31, this allow? ing the steam to'surr'ound-the control meins'f beri a-nd maintain the heat of the same at. a point preyentingsolidifg ing of, the grease;
Particular attention is directed to-"theronstruction 'otthe chamber 20 employed with lubricators for engines employing superk it heated steamiv since the arrangement disclosed is vitally:necessary to theproperrop- 1. eration of the'lubricatori In-testsof the" lubricatorinu vhicha chamber of the type shown in F inures 1" to 3; was employed, there grease was fed to the cylinders and that] at itsilower encl as indicated ateOr i.
