deflected nail is brought into the path of the knife employed to finish the breast portion of the heel, which is highly objection able,as the heels are ruined and the breast ing knifedama-gedI lnFig. 8, the throat is inclined away from the breast portion of deflected toward the breast portion of'the lifts without danger ofbeing brought into the path of the knife employed to trim the breast portion of the heel. Furthermore, if the deflection takes place, it would be more natural for the point to deflect toward the rear portion of the heel as inclicated by the dotted line '91, in which event ample room is afforded for such deflection. The top clamping member 50 is'capable of being swung in the arc of a circle with the stud or pin 55 as a center, when it is desired to place the heel lifts in position to be nailed, and also when it is desired to remove the heel lifts after they have been nailed together. Y
In the present instance the throat 15 is shown as pivoted so that it can be moved into different angular positions toenable different sizes of heels to be nailed ona single n'iachine, but'it is not desired to limit the invention in this respect, for in cases where the same'size of heels being used, the throat may be fixed in a permanently inclined position with relation to the bed and the breast of the lifts to be nailed.
I claim:
1. In a nailing machine of the character described, in combination, bed provided with a curved recess in its unuer surface e ttended to the top surface thereof to form therein a slot, a threat having a curved up 7 per surface conforming to the curvature of said recess, means 'for pivot/ally mounting move therewith.
3. In a nailing machine of the character described, in combination, a'bed plate pro vided with an opening through it, means for positioning a plurality of heel lift-sever said opening, a driver throat located below said bed plate and having its bore inclined at a suflicientlv acute angle to the'breast portion of said heel lifts, to prevent a nail driven from said throatfinto the heel lifts to be deflected to the breast surface thereof, a. driver cooperatlng with said throat, and
