Be it known that I, MARLON H. WINSLOW, a citizen of the United States. and a resident of Terre Haute, county of Vigo. and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Platform Scale; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts. v This invention relates to platformscales suitable for'railroad cars and vehicles of lighter construction, whereinthescale is constructed of but few levers and these of im provedform.v 1 1 he chiefobject of this invention is to reduce the cost. ofconstructing and maintaining the knife edges of the various levers by shaping the lever inv an improved manner. to permit machining the knife edges thereof While the same are embedded in thelever. r
One feature of the invention .consists'in embeddingthe knife edges in the lever casting'and havingthe individual edges extending. transversely across the lever. to permit a planer, sha er, or similar machine tool toflpass alongte .entire. length of the individual edge which permits the. latter to be machined to the same and desired bevel surface on each side of the knife edge with. substantial accuracy and, increased economy. Afurther feature of] the. invention consists in embedding the knife edges in the lever whichprevents any warping of'the knifejedges occasioned by the tempering thereof, since the edge will be forced into proper-alignment when the samevis driveninto the cast recess formed in the lever.

These and the foregoing features of such scale greatly simplify the construction of the scale, in fact, reducing the number of parts in a railway platform scale from about 300 to about 40. g

In the drawings there is shown a plat form scale including a suitable pit 10, a cross lever 11 connected at one end to the beam rod. not shown, while thejother end is supported upon a cross lever stand 12 positioned centrally-beneath t-he'scale platform 13. In spaced relation. with each other and in each corner of'the pit is a main side lever stand 14: which supports one end of the main. side lever 15, the other end being supported by the end. extension lever 16. The end extension; lever 16 is supported at one end upon the end extension lever stud 1:7 and the. other end is supported by the cross lever ll, as shown in Fig. 1. As illus trated the. scale consists of four main side levers suitably supporting the usual scale platform, two end extension levers support ingthe adjacent ends of two of the main side levers, the adjacent ends of said exten sion leversbeing suitably supported by the cross lever, the latter being connected to the beam rod,notshown.
The end extension levers 1.6 and the main Side levers are, of substantially the same design. Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate the improved lever construction which incorporates the chieffeatures of the invention. Since all the levers ,are substantially. similar,"a

Extending transversely .of said ribbing are the transverse bracket portions 21, the same I being positioned. upon each side of the lever and upon each side of an opening 22 formed in said ribbing- In one end. of the lever 15, in a suitable cast recess or slot 23, is our bedded the knife edge 24:. Upon the opposite end of the lever 15 is a similar recess or slot 25 in which a similar knife edge "26 is secured. The recesses or slots 23 and 25 extend transversely of the ribbing 23 and are adapted to receive the tempered knife edges 24: and 26 respectively. As shown clearly in Fig, 2 said knife edges are exposed upon the lever such that both beveled faces of each knife edge may be machined for sharpening and resharpening without removing the knife edges from the lever. In this manner the required bevel can be maintained without disturbing the multiple of said lever. Positioned in the slot 22 and extending transversely of said lever is a load, supporting l-rnife edge 2 the same similarly embedded in a bearing block 28. The bearing block 2% is adjustably positioned between the brackets 21 by means of the jam bolts 29; as shown. T iis feature of the'construction is shown in Patent No. 803,-t56 dated October 81. 1905. As described in said patent the knife edge 27 may be adjusted to the exact multiple desired by turning the respective bolts 29 in the proper direction and a suitable amount.
As illustrated in Fig. 3 the knife edges 24, 27 and. 26 extend substantially across the lever 15 and the entire length thereof. As illustrated in Fi 2 the knife edges 24 and 26 are exposedly positioned upon the lever 15 which permits the knife edges to be machined. as described. Preferably the knife edges 23 and 26 are cast with the lever 15 and the knife edge 27 is cast integral with the bearing block 28. Although the same is not illustrated it will be understood that the end extension lovers are constructed similarly to the main sidelevers described.
In Fig. 2 the horizontal line 91-40 representing the plane in which the knife edges lie, corresponds to the horizontal plane in.- cluding the center of gravity of the lever. lVith this construction the scale responds more readily and is more sensitive than if otherwise constructed.
All of the levers in said scale are levers of the second class only and said six levers 15. and 16, which receive the load from the platform and transmit it to the central cross frame 11, have downward movement under the influence of the load and transmit their powerby pressing downward on the lever to which they transmit the power instead of being suspended or pulling downward.
This enables a scale of this kind to be made with'only 7 levers and with only 40 pieces under the platform. This system of leverage makes it unnecessary to have a sin gle forging or link or clcvis under the platform, as Well as renders the bearings and knife edges and associated parts accessible for inspection and truing' up and for the knife edges to be in the same horizontal plane and the center line of gravity in each lever.
The invention claimed is:
1, A platform scale including a platform, a pair of transverse levers under each end of the platform, a cross lever for actuating a weight-indicating mechanism, a longitudinal lever for transmitting the effect of the load from the transverse levers at each end to said indicating actuating lever, and connections between said levers, all of said levers being of the second class of leverage.
2. A platform scale including a platform, a pair of transverse levers under each end of the platform, a cross lever for actuating a weight-indicating mechanism, a longitudinal lever for transmitting the effect of a' load from the transverse levers at each end to said indicating actuating lever, all of said levers being of the second class of levera and connections between said levers permitting the levers to rest upon and push each other downward under the influence of. a load, substantially as set forth.
3. A platformscale including a platform a pair of transverse leversunder each. end of the platform, a crosslever for actuating a weight-indicating mechanism, a longitudinal lever for transmitting the effect of a load from the transverse levers at each end to said indicating actuating lever, all of said le vers being of the second class of leverage, and knife edge bearings between and mounted in the adjacent parts of said levers and arrangedso that the actuated end of each lever rests upon andforces downward the actuated lever under the influence of the load.
4. A platform scale including a platform, a pair of transverse levers under each end of the latform, a cross lever for actuating a weig't-indicating mechanism, a longitudinal lever for transmitting the effect of a load from the transverse levers of eachend to said indicating actuating lever, all of said levers beingof the second class of leverage, and knife edge bearings operatively connecting said levers and for fulcruming each of said levers, all of said bearings being one posed to render them'accessible for inspection and machining.
5. A platform scale including a platform, a pair of transverse levers under each end of the platform, a centrally located cross lever for actuating a weight indicating mechanism, a centrally-located longitudinal lever for transmitting the effect of the load from the transverse levers of each end to the contral weight indicator actuating lever, said longitudinal levers being in alignment with eaeh 'othenall of said levers'being of the see 0nd class ofleverage, andesch lever overlapping the portion of the lever actuated by it,
and knife edge bearings located between the overlapping ortion of said levers.
6. A plat orm scale including at least 5 seven levers and having all of its knife edges lying in the same plane when in a normal or balanced condition, said levers having their centers of gravity in a horizontal plane, said knife edge plane and said center of avity plane substantially coinciding, where y sensitive action of the platform scale is secured.
