Y Loeoiuefrlvnnnnilrnl i application Afiled.zraniiary 20,', '1922. serial No. 530,5@ i
T all {uiwm it may concern.' l j l .y .Be it'known that I, BENJAMIN SH. MOORE, f a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wilkinsburv, in the county of Alleghenyy ennsylvania, have invented Iand State` of a new and .useful Improvement in Locomotive Frames, of which vthe`following is a Yspecification. f j
My invention relates to electric locomotives, more especially to locomotivefbeds which are mounted on wheel axles and support the vlocomotive body.: j
It is'among the'obj'ects of this invention to provide a locomotive-bed structure'comprising a pair I,of castingsfwhich :may be easily macliined'n-an'd readily assembled to provide a rigid structure.Vv i *l It isanotherobjectV ofthis invention to provide a design of the labove designated 2O type in whichthe various operating parts,
such as journalsupportsshal1 be embodied as a part of the framei'an'd which shall permit the several' parts to be assembled with assurance of obtaining accurate alignment and maintenance thereof after assembly.
It has been the practiceto make locomo- V tive beds vof separately'formed parts joined togetherby bolts, cross-ties, and the like, which required'considerable labor and eX- pense in machining and manufacture and which necessitated an excessive number of joints which 'were subjected to vibration and strain and, consequently, became loosened.v Another` type of construction suggested waste form the locomotive beds Vof a single unitary casting which, because of its bulk, ,was diificult to east and olfered eXtreme diiiculty in handlingv and machining.
Inmy present invention, I propose to form the locomotivebed of a pair of cast V ings, provided with'a longitudinal-joint at the center line' thereof, which offer no difficulties in casting and facilitate the handling' and machining during the manufactur-- V ing process. i Y
ln the accompanying 'drawing constituting a part hereof and in which like reference characters ,designate like parts,
Figure 1 is a plan viewxof a portion of a m invention;
locomotive bed formed inv accordance with' the line III-III of 'Figa-.t 1
- Fig.' 3 is a cross-sectional viewtaken along portions 3 which' constitute the endsills ofVA the locomotive'bed. The ycradle members 2 are of semi-cylindrical shape and are prio- The membersl 1,'V` 1 constitute the Aside mil Vvided Lwith lPlane seating surfaces t' and l straight longitudinal depending'- flanges 5 vforming a longitudinal joint along" lthe center line of the castings which are secured togethery by a plurality of .bolts 56. The j' flanges 5'are provided with a1 groove-andlmi tongue connection 7 which must be accurate- 'machined iin vorder tov insure yaccurate alignment of thevside 'frame members f1. The side-framemembers ll are further provided withdepending flanges along 'their Y central' portions which are provided with f strengthening ribs 9.V The I semi-cylindrical cradle members 4are providedwith projecting YAlugs 10 which are accurately machined pedestals 1l having spaces 12 therein for mounting the journal boxes t not shown) and the center of the cradle is provided with the side Jframes integral therewith to insure V,for seating the stators" of themotors. The'V side frames are' provided witha plural-ityof 'j positive alignment of the motors and'jackshaft supports 13. j Y
The cradle frame is designedv to provide *Y l no j a rigid central support 15 having a plane surfacel for clamping the motor stators and for securing the'motor covers which are mounted thereon after the motors khave been j assembled inthe frame.
The structure herein described may constitute but onefhalf of a locomotive frame,
the other portion thereof being aduplicate' of the portion illustrated in the drawings.
' vIt will be readily understood from thek 'I above description of myinventionthat locomotive beds'iformed in aceerdancetherewithf provide a simple rigid structure which inioo sures positive alignment of the motor 'and' jackshaft bearings and which ydoes not re-g ties, which was common in prior` assembled* l quire yadditional bracing, as byseparate cross Qi., 'A VV1,469,236k
structures. VIt* will Yalso "be notedthat the metal is concentrated at a point Where itis most needed and, therefore, offers the maximum strength vfithfthe minimum amoiintiozf Weight.'v Y VAlthough I have described a specific em'- -bodiment-'ofmy invention, :iti-will heob-Yious Vications may be made in the details -ol con-f l0 struction thereof.
