coMBI ATI N-R LE, saunas, AND LEVEL.
Application filed January 10,1922. Serial No. 28,279.
To'all whom-it may concern:
Be it known that we, ROBERT E. -Mc- GOWAN and Fnnnnrok WV. MOCORRY, citizens of the United States, and residents of Cowley, in the county of Big Horn and State of lVyoming, have inventedlnerw and 11m proved Combination Rules, Squares; and Levels, of whichvthe following is a description. a
The general object of our invention is to provide a sectional tool having novelmeans wherebyto adapt it-tobe readily converted into a rule or a square at-will, oneiofthe sections constituting a level. I
The nature of the invention, its distinctive features andadvantages will clearly appear as the description proceeds.
Reference is to be had to theaccompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of'one example of the invention. 1- V Figure 1 is a side elevation of oneof the sections;
Figure 2 is a cross section on the line 2-2, I
Figure 1; I
Figure 3 is an end vlew of one of the sections; I
Figure 4 is an edge View of said section at one end;
Figure 5 is an elevation of a screw plug to be hereinafter referred to;
Figure 6 is a partly sectional side elevation of an end of the second section;
Figure 7 is a cross section on the line 77, Figure 6; w
Figure 8 is a sectional side View of the adjacent ends of the sections when connected in the form of a square. 7
In carrying out our invention in accordance with the illustrated example, two elon- V gated sections 10, 10 are provided having scales thereon, one of the sections being formed with a frame 11 to receive level glasses 12 and guard glasses 13 therefor.
' At one end of a section, as 10, we provide a transverse casing let and provide a similar casing 15 longitudinally disposed at the other end of the section, the two casings thus being at right angles. Within each casing 14:, and 15, is a socket 16 having parallel recesses or undercuts 17 diametrically opposite. An internally threaded socket 18 is.
provided on the other section 10 at an end thereof to which is secured the threaded end 19 of a connecting-element 20 which projects beyondlthe socket 18 and"isprovidedswith lateral lugs 21 in, pairs diametricallyop posits-to be inserted in a socket 16 and given a partial turn to enter the lugs in the underin the other socket 16 as shown in Figure-8,
thereby disposing the sections 10, lO'i Jat right angles to each other to constitute asquare. V
In order to prevent play of theiconnected sections we provide screws r22 adapted to be 5 routs 17; vThe arrangementqis such that the.
accommodated in holes 23 in the respective.
sections, the, screws passing through holes in one section and being in threaded engagement with the holes in the other section. Thus, the sections 10, 10 may be separated for assembling the same in knocked downform in which case the connecting element 20 may be unscrewed from the outer end of i the socket 18 and inserted in the inner end of said socket as indicated by dotted lines in l 'igure 6. In the latter position of the connecting element 20 the socket 18 may be closed by a screw plug 24. The sockets l6 may be fastened in the casing 14, 15 bya set screw 16 indicated as seen in. Figure 8. i
We would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes: a practical embodiment of our invention, we do not limit ourselves strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied withoutedeparture from the spirit of the invention as de fined in the appended claims.
, Having thus describedour invention, we claim: V V
1. A device of the class described comprising separate sections, one section having sockets at right angles to each other and adjacent to :the respective ends, the other section having a connecting element adapted to either of said sockets to dispose the sections in alinement with each other to constitute a rule, orat right angles to each other to constitute a square, together with screw means on one section to securely clamp the sections in either position.
2. A device of the class described comprising separate sections, one section having sockets at right angles to each other and adjacent to the respective ends,the other section having a connecting element adapted to either of said sockets to dispose the sectiens ing sections adapted tobedisposed in longitudinal' alinement to constitute a rule or at.
right angles to each other-to constitutessquare, one of the sections pl 1%; as socketv at each end, one at right angles to the other, and a fastening element to connect the sections said element having means -to secure it to one section and presenting lateral lugs, the sockets oi the other Sfifii'liall having recesses corresponding withsaid lugs and adaptedtoreceive the latter by a partial turning of the one section relatively tothe other.
4:. A device of the class described including sections adapted to be disposed in longiv detachably secure it holes adjacent to theso'ckets to re-W tudinal alinement to constitute a rule or at right angles to each other to constitute a square,- one of the sections presenting a socket at each end, one at right angles to the other, and a fastening eiei ent to connect the sections, said element having meansto senting lateral lugs, the sockets of the other section having recesses corresponding with said lugs and adapted to receive the latter by a partial turningofthe one section .relatively to the other. I
5. A device of the class described including sections adapted to be disposed in longito one section; and prev tudinal alinement to constitutea rule, or at right angles to each other to constitute a square,-
the other, and a fastener element for the one of the sections presenting asocket at each end, one at right angles to sections, carried/by the other section, said fastener elementhaving detachable engagement with. the last-mentioned socket, and.
having a series :of lug'inembers to engage in either of the sockets of the other section. V V
