Be it known that I, Fnnunnrcn CoA'rns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Container Tops, of which the following is a speciication.

This invention relates to paper containl0 ers commonly known asZ paper cans.

More particularly theinvention relates to container tops and means of'sealing the same to the can body.

It is common in the art for heads on tops for cans of various materials which heads have the central portion bumped inward so that a U-s'haped channel is pro- -Avided around the 'head' wherein the upper edge of the can body fits. It is also common in the art to coat the outside of the lip or top of the body, in paper cans, with an adhesive. In metallic cans the adhesive is replaced by a solder at this point. In all such cases the inner surface of the body is uncoated and consequently a capillary crack exists between the inside of the can body and the inner leg of the U-shaped channel. As a result the can contents get into this crack and, in the course of storage,

` dry .out so that it frequently happensthat the contents are spoiled or are reduced in quality to such an extent as to make them` unsalable.

The principal object of the present invention is to provide a paper container top which is so secured to the container body as to do away with this capillary crack and the objections pertaining thereto.

With the above and other objects in View, as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of an improved arrangement of paper container and top therefor.

In the accompanying drawings, 4like characters of referencel indicate like parts in the several views, and:-

Figure 1 isl a perspective View of the container top removed from the body.

Figure 2 is a section through such a top and the upper part of the body before final sealing.

Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 after final sealing.-

From the accompanying drawings it will I9 be seen that the improved container top consists' of a central disk-like portion 10 carrying an inverted U-shaped peripheral portion 11, the inner and outer legs of the U normally flaring before application as shown in Figures 1 and 2. Moreover the inner leg of the U is Lperpendicular to the body 10. The entire inside of this channel is coated with glue as shownat 12, it being understood that 'the term glue includes any suitable adhesive. After coating the inside of the channel in this way the container top is placed on the can 13. The in- A side leg of the channel will then bear against the inside of the body 13 at its mouth so that this inside leg will have a strat-um of glue impressed between it and the body 13. The outside leg is then crimped down as shown in Figure Thus there will be astratum of glue between the body 13 and the entire inside of the channel so that there is no chance of any of the contents of the can to obtain access to the space between the container top and the body.

There has thus been4 rovided a simple and ellicient device of t e kind described and for the purpose specified.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:-

A paper container top consisting of a iiat central disk like portion provided with an upstanding peripheral portion of inverted U-shape. the inner leg of-said U being perpendicular to the disk like portion and the outer leg flaring downwardly and outwardly from the inner leg, the inner sur- A face of saidchannel being coated throughout with adhesive; in combination with a cylindrical container closed at one end and open at the other, said cap being fitted in the open end of said container with the inner leg projecting downwardly therein, the container having a mouth fitting closely on said inner leg of the peripheral portion and thereby forcing excess adhesive upwardly on said inner leg. said cap having the outer leg of said peripheral portion initially Haring outwardly from .the container and being pressed against the containerfrom above downwardly thereby expelling excess adhesive downwardly from between said outer leg and cap.
