-To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ELLIorr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented' a new and useful Box, of which the following is a spcification.
A well-known form of packing box consists of a tube or, as itis often termed, a fun'- nel, formed of a strip of pasteboard having its ends secured together, the strip being creased or bent to furnish rectangular` edges. into this funnel are forced opposite ends or heads,
'each head having provided along its edges flanges corresponding to the sides of the funnel, and being respectively secured to said sides by staples to complete the closure.
` While such boxes are relatively light, strong and inexpensive, the structure includes three distinct elements, which .when stored or shipped `flat must be brought together to be assembled; .they present some ditiiculties'in associating the heads with the funnels in getting the flanges to register properly with the ends of the funnel in :preparation for inserting the fastenings; and when the box is opened, one of the heads is naturally cut or otherwise separated from the body, leaving no convenient cover. 'These objections the present invention overcomes without material'increase in the cost of the box and without sacriticing its other advantages.
The invention resides in the various combinations and relations hereinafter described and particularly claimed.
One of several embodiments which my invention may assume is illustrated lin the accompanying drawing, in. which Figure 1 shows my improved box knocked down, but
with the sides of the funnel somewhat separated, as in starting the step of ormin the box to receive its contents; and Fig.'2 s ows `in perspective the box set up, with one of the ends free at three of its edges to serve as a cover. l
The tubular funnel furnishing the four side walls 10of my improved box, which walls meet at' the edges 11, these being Irectangular in the completed box, is formed from a strip of pasteboard or like suitable materiaLwith its ends overlapped and secured by a row of staples 12 or other fas# teners. Each of the opposite heads or end walls 13 has, at three edges, flanges 14 formed by bending said edges along lines. 15 produced by indentations or otherwise weakened portions impressed in the material of the head. At the fourth edge of each head the flangeis longer than those of thJe associated edges, including an inner 'portion 16 bent upon a line 17 between the flange and the body of the head, and an vouter portion 18 divided from the flange-portion llby a weakenedline 19. The lines 17 and 19 arev so impressed in the head material that ,the flanges naturally bend in opposite directions.
En preparation for the assembling ot the box, the flange-portions 18 may be secured to the Vinner surface of each end of oppositel sides of the walls 10 of the Jfunnel bye. row of staples 20, the position or' the Harige-portions 18 beino such that the lines 19 practically coincide .with the 'edges ot these walls 10. To complete the closure, the heads 13 are turned in about the flange- portions 16 and 18 as hinges, the indented line 19 being at the axis ofthe hinge, until the head lies just within and at right angles to the side walls 10, with the outer edges of the flanges 14 situated in the plane fof the endsv of the funnel and the flange-portions 16 and 1.8 parallel to each other. When thus'located, rows of staples 21 may be driven through the flanges 14 and walls 10, thus 'fastening the heads securely. When it is desired'to ob tain access to the contents'of the box thus closed, the staples 21 may be withdrawn from the ianges 14, leaving the row y20 through the Hange-portion 18 still in place.

the 4structure being complete as a unit, with no unsecured parts, and with which `one needs only to open or expand the funneland bend the heads into position about their hinges and fasten them to furnish a closed box. In doing` this, since these heads are already secured by their ange-portions 18 in correct relation tothe funnel walls, the other anges 14 of these heads slip easily and in proper alinement into lace in the funnel, there being little possibility of inserting them too far or irregularly in preparation for the insertion of the ,staples 21. A box comprising side Walls and a cooperating end Wall having atone edge a double flange consisting of inner and outerportions, the meeting lines between the ilange-portions and between the inner flangeportion and the side Wall being arranged to cause the flanges to bend in opposite direc-p tions, and means for securing the outer flange-portion only to a side wall.
5. A box comprising 'side Wallsgand a co Lacasse f f operatin end wall having at one edge a double an `e and at the outer edges single flanges, an means for securing' the single 'langesand the outer` portion only of the doublelange to the side walls.
6. A box comprising side walls and a cooperating end Wall having at one edge a double flange and at the other edges single langes, and staples securing the single flanges and the outer portion of the double flangesto the 'side walls, thev inner portion of the double flange being free kfrom the staples.
7. A folding knock-down box comprising side walls secured to one another to form a tube and arranged to fold at their junctions to bring said Walls into parallel relation While thus secured, and end Walls each attached at one edge to a side Wall and arranged to foldeoutwardly parallel to said side Walls. f

means for securing the outer portion of the flan es to opposite ends ofthe opposite side Wal s, said end walls being arranged to bend outwardly parallel to the side walls.
9. A folding ,box comprising side Walls secured to -oneanother to form a tube and arranged vto fold at their junctions to bring said walls into parallel relation While thus secured, and end Walls attached to and arranged to lie upon the folded side Walls and to fit within the\tube when, said sidewalls are opened. j
