T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. CARY, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Greenfield, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Spring-Manipulating Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in valve lifters for lifting the valves of automobiles and the leading object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient tool or device which will enable a person to quickly compress the valve spring and hold it compressed.
With the above and other objects in view the invention relates to certain new and useful combinations, constructions and arrange ments of parts, clearly described in the following specification and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my improved device in working position, with the jaws shown in section.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device by itself showing the upper and the lower jaws.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on an enlarged scale taken on line 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view showing the swiveled connection of the screw taken on line 4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating the practical embodiment of my invention 5 designates the lower jaw carrying arm and 6 the upper jaw carrying arm.
The arm 5 is formed with an enlarged ter-' minal bifurcated jaw 5, the longitudinally disposed slot 5 of which is adapted to reoeive the valve stem 7. The arm 6 is provided with a terminal jaw 6 which is bifurcated to provide a stem receiving slot 6 and the inner end of this slot as well as the entrance portion thereof is enlarged so as to have a greater diameter than the slot 5 of the lower jaw 5 The jaw 5 is disposed in angular relation to the major portion of the arm 5 and the rear end of said arm is pivotally connected to the connecting bar 8 by means of the pin 9. The connecting bar 8 is formed with an end slot 8 to receive the rear end of the arm 5 and is provided with a stop portion 8 against which the rear end of the arm 5 is adapted to abut to limit the outward movement thereof as shown in detail in Fig. 5.
internal screw threads medially disposed between the ends thereof which are engaged by the screw 11 which is adapted to work through said internal screw threads and is provided on its rear end with a head 12 equipped with a cross arm 13 whereby the screw may easily be turned by hand. The inner end of the screw 11 has swivel connection with the spreader bar 14, said bar 14 being formed with a socket 15 to receive the inner or forward end of the screw 11. In order to reduce the friction between the forward end of the screw and the spreader bar to aminimum the forward end of the screw 11 is equipped with a ball 16 which is retained in place on the screw 11 by means of the cup or bearing element 17 having an interfitting connection with said screw. The ball 16 engages a ball 18 which is disposed in the bottom of the socket of the spreader member and the ball 18 is retained in place by a collar or retainer 19. The screw 11 is formed at its forward end with a groove having a downwardly and outwardly sloping wall 20 which is engaged by the screw or retaining pin 21 secured in an opening 21 formed in the spreader bar 14 in line with the screw 11 and the connection between the said screw or pin 21 and the operating screw 11 is such that the operating screw will turn very easily on the spreader bar 14 and will have a slight longitudinal play. By this swivel connectionj between the operating screw and the spreader bar it is impossible for the spreader bar to become disengaged from the screw or the screw from frictionally binding in the spreader bar and by removing the screw 21 the spreader bar may be readily disconnected from the operating screw 11.
The ends of the spreader bar 14 are bifurcated to provide slots 22 and 23- to receivethe arms 5 and 6 and in these slots 22 and 23 hardened rollers 24 and 25 are mounted upon the pins 26 and 27 so as to engage the inner or opposing faces of the arms 5 and 6, the arms 5 and 6 being connected to the bar 8 so that the arms 5 and 6 will converge from said bar 8 toward the jaws thereof so as to present inclined surfaces to the rollers 24: and 25.
Then the retaining screw or pin 21 is removed the spreader member may be tilted on the arms 5 and 6 after having been withdrawn from engagement with the screw 11 and may be easily disengaged from the arms 5 and 6 and completely removed.
In using the device the lower jaw is positioned against the guide or stationary portion A of the engine and the upper jaw is engaged with the collar B against which the valve spring C seats and the opening or slot 6 is large enough to permit the jaw 6 to easily pass the key D on the stem E, whereby continued movement of the screw will expand the jaws sufficiently to compress the spring whereby the key may be removed after which the valve can be easily lifted by hand. v
Having described my invention, I claim: A valve spring manipulating tool consisting of companion jaw member's 'pivotally connected together with the reposing faces disposed in converging. relation to. each other, a bar having end slots slidably receiving the members and provided with a socket having a ball therein, a screw having a terminal ball disposed in the socket and provided with a groove, a retaining element extending through the bar into the groove of the screw to maintain the balls in bearing relation to each other and the screw rot-atably connected to the bar against a longitudinal disengagement and a nut associated with the arms in which the screw extends.
