Description

'Patentecl Sept. 11, 1923.
IJNTED ARTHUR IE. WIT'IEN, OF AKRON, OHIO.
TOY BALLOON.
Application filed May 16', 1922. Seral 1 To. 561,473.
associated therewith simple, efiicient means whereby the Same when inflated may be cl0sed and retained in an inflated condition.
Another object is to provide a toy ball oon having permanently attached theret0 a new and in1proved cl osure device of st-rong, durable construction which may be manufactured at a 10W price and which may be quickly ancl conveniently operated to receive the neck of a t0y balloon and hold the same in a closed position.
Further objedts are to provide a closure n1eans which will be of light weight and which may be pennanentlv secu-red to a to v balloon without injury thereto and which may be used with0ut injuring or destroying the balloon.
The above objects are accomplished and additional ends are attained by the novel conruetion, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustratecl in the accompanying clrawings in which I have shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, it being understood that the invention is capable of various adaptations and that ohanges and modifications mav be made or substitutions resorted 't which come within the scope of the claims herennto appended.
In the drawing in which sin1ilar numerals of reference are used to designate similar 01 like parts as the same may apnear in any of the several views and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a toy balloon constructed in accordance with this invention and showing the sarne inflated and closed by means of my improved closu-re device.
Figure 2 is aperspective view of my improved closure dev1ce.
Fgnre 3 1s a s1de elevat1onal view showing a toy balloon secured in an inflated c0ndition by means of my improved device.
Figure 4c is a side elevational view of a to v ballcon constructed in accordance vvith this invention and showing the manner of inflating same preparatory to closing the neck thereof.
Referring now to a detailed description of the invention with reference to the ac companying drawing, the numeral 5 is used to designate a rubber balloon vvhich may be spherical as shown in the d-ravvings 01 of any desired shape. The balloon 5 is provided with an integral inflation s'tem or neck 6 which, as illnstrated, is of ordinary construction and projects radially from the balloon. The nnmeral 7 denotes a-closu-re 1nember Which is preferably formed of WOd or. other light material.
In the particular adapta*ton of the iniention shovvn the member 7 is vvedge shaped having straight flat sides and a thick end 7" and a thin end 7 That portion of the area of one of the fla-t sides lying adjacent tl1e thin end 7 is coated-with rubbGI' cement or other adhesive and the member 7 is adhesively secured to the outer surface of the balloon at a point adjacent the stem 5 and with the thick end 7 a projec'ting toward the said stern. The mernber 7 is provided at a point adjacent the= thick end thereof with the notch 8 which projects into the said wedge from one edge thereof. The notch 8 is preferably formed with parallel sicle walls vvhich are inclined tovvard the thick end 7. The notch 8 extencls into the member 7 to a depthsuflicient to receive and holcl the nee}; 6 as hereinafter set fortl1.
In use, the balloon is inflated to the desired size, the neck 6 is then tvvisted to close the opening therein, whereupon the neck is stretched and forced into the notch 8 as shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Having thus illustraced my invention an described the same in detail, what I claim as new and desir e to secure by Letters-Patent is 1. In a toy balloon of the c1ass descrbed, t0 said ba1100n with the thick end thereof an ntegral neck, a member adhesvely setoward sad stem -and a notch in sad mem- 10 cured to the exterior surface of sad balloon ber adjacent sad thck end, said member at a point adj-acent sad neck, said member adapted to receive and hold sad neck.
provded wth a notch aclapted to receive In testmony whereof I have hereunt-o and held sad stem. se't my hand.
2. A rubber balloon havng an ntegral neck and a wedge-shaped member secured ARTHUR P. \VITTEN
