Be it known that I, DAVID IV. GUTEIIUNST,
a citizen of the United States, residing at4 Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Toy Vehicle, of which the following is a specification. Y I
My invention relates to new and useful im rovements in a toy vehicle, and has for its rimary object to provide means whereby said vehicle may be propelled or pushed and steered.
Another object of the invention is to provide a toy vehicle or velocipede adapted to be propelled by a person seatedthereon by placing the feet upon the ground, said vehicle `having a movable front wheel for steering purposes and provided with means having connection with said wheel whereby the vehicle may be both pushed and steered by a person other than the onev riding.
Vith these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter `set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which Fig. 1, is a plan view of a toy vehicle made in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2, is a side elevation thereof with a portion of the push rod broken away and shown in section to illustrate a detail of construction.
Fig. 3, is a front end view thereof with the foot rest and its bracket removed.
Fig, 4f, is a rear end view of the same.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, 2 represents a seat provided with a reduced forwardly projecting` extension.
which is adapted to be straddled by a person using the vehicle so that the feet may engage the ground to propel the vehicle;
Through the forward end of the seat, and more particularly the extension thereof, passes the steering post 4 properly or adequately braced on one or both sides of the seat by lsuitable bearings 5 and 6.
On the lowerl end of the-steering post-is suitably mounted a frontfwheel;T whileon I theupper end is mounted a steering wheel-8 which is held in place by means of a vbutteriiy nut 9 or its equivalent which when slightlybacked oft will permit the steering wheel to turn free of the steering post so as not to turnv the front wheel.
To the bottom side of thel seat, adjy acent its rear end is fastened a bolster 10 in' some suitable orwell known manner and is suitably supported by a brace 11, one `end vof which.,

Atthe forward end of thel seat, or more i particularly yits extension, isa rearwardlyv projecting depending bracket 14 having a transverse foot rest 15 at itslower endand at the rear end of the seat is a back rest 16 4 for anobvious purpose.
To theunderside of the ,l rear portion ofv vthe seat is fixed a journal bracket 17 the horizontal arm 18 of which projects through or y registers with a slot 19 in the upper end kof thev bolster 10 while the ournal 2O l, forming apartvof said bracket preferably projects;
rearwardly and downwardly or at an angle to the arm. In thejournal 2O is rotatably mounted the push rod 21 preferably made in two separable parts or sections, one section including a short shaft 22 with a pulley 23 on its lower end and provided at its other end with means for connection to the stem 24 which is the other section, said connecting means being here shown as a lpolygonal sided plug 25 for registration with the socket 26 in the end of the stem. 4stem carries a suitable handle 27 to be gripped by the kperson pushing the vehicle.
To the steering post and the pulley 23 are fixed cables 28 or equivalent ties whereby the pulley and steering post will rotate simultaneously in the same direction and as here shown such cables are in the form of a rope passing around the pulley and steering post to which it is fastened by staples 29 or equivalent fastening devices. These cables or ties pass through holes 30 in the bolster.
The vehicle may be used by a child in the Said v ordinary manner when desired but itr oftenened from the post so as to revolve free thereof thus preventing the rider from steerJ ing in oppositionv to the pusher.
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as herein shown as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without de parting from the spirit of my invention.
Havingthus fully described my invention, what I claim asIl newl and useful is IQIn combination with a toy vehicle, a seat, wheels supporting the seat, a steering post connected with one of said wheels, means carried by said post whereby it may be actuated by a person on the vehicle, and means located at the rear of the vehicle and connected with said steering post whereby said' vehicle may be pushed and steered by a person other than the rider.
2. The combination with a toy vehicle comprising a seat, a bolster at the rear of said seat, wheels connectedl with said bolster, 'a steering postr rotatably mounted in the forward end of the seat, a wheel con nected with the lower end of said post and a steering wheel carried by the upper end of said post, of a journal bracket fixed to the underside ofy the seat at the rear end thereof, a Ipushlrod journa'lled therein and means connected with said push rod and the steering post whereby a rotary movement of the push rod will be transmitted to the steering post.
3. A toy vehicle comprising in combination, a seat, a reduced forwardly projecting extension, a steering post passing through the forward end of said extension, bearings for bracing said post, a wheel connected with-the lower end of said post, a steering wheel on the upper end of said post, means whereby said wheel' may be fixed to the post or allowed to turn free thereof, a bolster at the rear end of the seat, said bolster having a slot and holes therethrough, wheels connected with said bolnster, a brace to support said bolster, a bac-k rest at the rear of the seat, a rearwardly projecting depending bracket at the forward end of the extension,
-a transverse foot rest fixed to the lower end of said bracket, a journal bracket having a portion projecting through the slot in the bolster and secured to the underface of the seat and having a journal projecting at an angle from the portion by which the bracket is attached to the seat, a short shaft rotatably mounted in the journal, a pulley on the lower end, thereof, means connected with the pulley and the steering postl for` DAVID W.
