Be it known that I, BENJAMIN'F; KURTZ,
a citizen of the United -States,re'siding in Avalon, in the `county of vAllegheny andl State of Pennsylvania', have invented cerf tain new and useful Improvements in Brake-AdjustingzMechanism, of. which the following is a specification. 1
adjusted so that the brake slioe Willbe main-V tained in its proper position when the brake is released without permanently.` bending the' spring to obtain such adjustment.
Referring to the drawing in which like reference characters refer to like parts,` Fig. 1, is a sideelevational view of a portion of a railwaycar truck and brake mechanism having the invention embodied therein. Fig. 2, is anend elevational view of the saine taken in the direction as indicated by the arrow A in Fig. 1. Y
Referring now in detail to the drawing the reference character-.1 indicates a truck frame which may be of any suitable form or construction and having wheels 2- mounted therein in any preferred Amanner.V
The reference character 3 indicates a dead lever of the brake mechanism, the upper end portion of which is pivotally connected with the truck frame through the medium of aV pin f1. The' lower end portion of this lever is provided with abrake shoe head 5 Vsuch head being pivoted to the lever through. the medium of a pin 6. The back portion of the head comprises spaced portions 7 between which the lower portion of the lever 3 ex-` tends and to which the lever is pivotally connected. Below the lower end of the lever 3 the head 5 is provided withV webs Sand 9 which extend betweenV the spaced portions 1' and are preferably integral therewith. These webs are spaced apart providing an opening 10 between them. The' web 8 ad jacent the openin 10 is provided with an outwardly projecting lug 11 which is prefer-Y ably integral with the web. For the purpose of holding the head 5 in its proper position so that the shoe 12 secured thereto will notv drag on the wheelwhen the brake is released, a spring 13 is provided, the upper end portion 14 of which slidably engages the through which l threaded This invention relates to railway car.
spring. 13.
Aspring into close 'contact .I claim as new and tacts withand'passes over the lug 11 and through rtheopeningv 10 and engages the un derside of the webv 9. Adjacent the'lug 11 the web 8 is provided with an opening beingadapted to engage the portion 18 extending rrecan COMPANY, or 'rirvrfsisunem inivivssr-'Lveiviny LA Y coni on ATION or Nn'w 'i leverandlthe lowervrfend. portionilbcon- I v a bolt lpasses, the head1?Y 'Y web 8 and the through the opening and lthrough an*V opening` in theY which extends through vThe'end portion of the bolt f the spring is Vproi vided with a nut 19 which is adapted to 7' engage the spring betweenthe lever and the llfigll.vr lVhen thespring 13 is applied to tliefhead 5 Yand it is--desiredto adjust the spring so that the shoe will be held in its properV position, thev nutis turned in thepdi- Vrection as indicatedby the 'arrowin Fig. v2
which forcesthe `end portionf 14 of the with the lever 3,
It :will be noted that bythe use Vof thenut 19 the tension onthe spring i" may be increasedor decreasedY as desired without permanently bending the spring as j Y has heretofore been the practice.
Having thus described the `invention what,
ters Patent is f 1. Ina brake mechanism, a brake lever, a brake shoe headpivotally connected with desire to secure byk Let# said lever and va spring mounted onfsaidj' head and engaging said lever and means in-1 termediate the ends of said spring for .ad`V justing the tension of said spring,
2. In a brake'inechanisni, a brake lever, a
brake shoe head pivotally connected with said lever, a spring mounted on saidhead and engaging said lever' and screw means intermediate tlie ends ofsaid'springfor adjusting the tension of said spring.
3. In a brake mechanism, a brake lever, a i
brake shoe'head pivotally connected with;
saidlever, a spring mounted in said head, a projection adapted to space a portionrof said' spring away from said head andmeansadjacent said projection for adjusting the tension of said spring;
4c. In a brake mechanism, a brake lever, a brake shoe head pivotally connected with said lever, said head having spaced backV portions, webs extending lbetween said spaced portions, a lug projectingfrom one of said webs, a spring engaging said lever and lug and passing between said websand means for adjusting the tension on said spring.
5. In a brake mechanism, a brake lever, a brake shoe liead connected with said lever, said head having spaced back portions, spaced webs extending between said back portions, a spring engaging said lever and webs, and means independent of said lever for adjusting the tension onsaid spring;
6. In a brake mechanism, a brake lever, a brake shoe head, a spring connected with said head adapted to engage with said lever,
a lug on said head adapted to engage with said springend means intermediate the ends 15 of said spring and between said levery and lug for adjusting the tension on said spring. In testimony whereof l affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN F. KURTZ.
