W.' B. HENKEL Loox oR DEMOUNTABLE RIMS Filed Dec. 9. 1920 @aya Patented Aug. A28, 1923.
WILLIAM B. HENKEL, or BALTIMOBE, MARYLAND.
LOCK FOR DEMOUNTABLE RIMS.
Application filed December 9, 1920. Serial No. 429,389.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ViLLniu B. HnNKnL, a citizen of the United States, residing n the city of Baltimore, inthe State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Lock for Demountable Rims, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to locks yfor demountable wheel rims of the type shown and described in my co-pending application executed September 10, 1920 led Feb. 19, 1921, Serial Number 446,386. i
The object of they invention is to provide asimple and eflicient locking device for securing the ends of a sectional rim locking member to avoid accidental rseparation of the sections ot' said member.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described, and specifically pointed out in the claim In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a portion of a wheel equipped with one form of this improved lock.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail plan view.
Fig. 4 is'atransverse section showing a slightly diderent form of lock,
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the form shown in Fig. 4; and, Y
Fig. 6 is a detail plan view.
In the embodiment illustrated the device constituting this inventionV yis shown applied to a demountable wheel rim carried by4 a wheel telly R. The rim is composed of two superposed` fixed and removable members 1 and 2 respectively held assembled by a sectional locking member 5, the opposed ends of two of the sections 6 and 7 thereof being secured by thelock or connector 10 con stituting this invention. The member 1r is a felly band and is secured to the telly R and the member 2 is a tire `casing rim and isA mounted on, as well as being connected with,
the band 1.
This lock 10 comprises a substantially T-shaped member the head11 of which is composed of laterally spaced, plate`s 12 and 13 connected at their outer edges by an integral web 10a to adapt the member 10 tobe slipped over the offset portion 4 or" flange V3 of member 1. f
`In the form shown in F igs. 1, 2 and 3 the offset iiange portion4 of member 1 has Iextending edgewise therethrough an aperture 15 'which registers with anaperture 16 passing through the web 10=t connecting plates 1,2 vand 1 3, said aperture being located I in a cutout portion or recess 17 of said web. A bolt 18 extends through these registering apertures and has a nut 19 engaged therewith and 'housed in said depression 17 and when screwed down firmly clamps member 10 to the flange'4 o1 member 1 operating to hold said member 10`in locking position.
In Figs. 4 and 5 the flange 4 is also ape-rtured edgewise asin the other figures and the web of the connecting plates 12 and 13 'is slotted longitudinally as at 16a to receive a T-shaped locking key 20, the head 21 of which is attcned and apertured to receive a tool for locking and unlocking it. The
-slot 16 terminates in a recess 16b in said web and a groove-like seat 16c intersects slot 16"" to receive the key head 21 to hold the key in locked position; The shank 22 of the key extends below the offset flange 4 and has a plate spring 23 carried by its projecting portion the ends of which engage notches 24 in the lower face of the flanged portion 4. A coiled spring 25 on said shank 22 is engaged at one end with the shank and at its other end extends through spring 23 and the turning of the key operates to screw said spring through the spring 28 to vary its tension, and thetwo operate to hold the key head seated in groove 16c tosecu're the lock 10 in operative position.
The preferred embodiment of the inven-l tion is disclosed in the drawings and set kforth in the. specification, but it will be understood that any modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing from theprinciple of the invention orsacrificing any of its advantages.
What claim is:
1. The combination with a demountable wheel rim having a sectional locking ila-nge;
nector Jfitting between the ends of saidV locking flange, said flanged ends and connector l having interengaging elements, arprojecton carried by said riin to extend through the epe 'ture in said web, and ineens to lock said. projection and hold said connectorA in operative position, said Connector lying Wholly Within the plane of the iia'nge forming a,
ysmooth unbroken connection between the ends of the iinnge.
2. The combination with a deinountable wheel riin having a sectional locking inember; of a' lock for the sections of said rnelnber comprising` e double walled connector, with en apertured web connecting one edge or" the Weils, said Willis beingdisconnected at their outer edge to slip over and connect the sections of said locking member, and a, springlocking; element for securing seid connectoi` to the rim.
3. The combination withy a deniountabie Wheel rim having a sectional iocking member; of a lock for the sections of said inember comprising a double walled connector7 with an apertured web connecting one edge oi the Walls, said Walls being disconnected at their outer edge to slip over and connect the sections of said 1Arocking member, a spring locking element for securing said connector to the rino comprising; a T-shaped key extending through the flperture in said web ani through said rim, and a spring to hold said key in operative position.
In testimony whereof, I affix iny signature hereto.
TWILLh/i B. HENKEL.
