To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELY. IsnAnL, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVilkes- Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp Holders for Miners Caps, of which the following is a. specification.

This invention relates to improvements in lamp holders for miners caps and has as itsgeneral object to provide a device for this purpose which will possess many advantages notpresent in holders of the ordinary construction and which will furthermoreovercome many of the disadvantages which attend the use of the ordinary types of holders.

Miners lamps are ordinarily provided upon their rear sides with a hookedvstem,

an opening in the holder through which the stem is to be fitted, and'the lamp thus sup ported upon the front of the cap. However the bill of the hooked stem, in such a const-ruction projects into the-cap and, should the miner strike his head against an overhead beam or, other object there is liability of the point of the hooked stem cutting a gash in his forehead. Therefore it is one oi the primary objects of the present inven' tion to provide a holder so constructed that the stem of thelamp, when engaged there with \ill be located wholly eXteriorly of thecap so-that suchan accident cannot occur.

Another object presented by the ordinary holder is that when the head is inclined. forwardly, the stem of the lamp is liable to slip y from engagement with the holder thus permitting the lamp to fall to the ground. It is therefore a further object of the invention to so construct the holder e; overcome this disadvantage and insure against drop- The ordinary type of holder is also objec tionable for the reason that the lamp is permitted to have more or less side play, and

7 therefore the invention has as a further im-' portant object to so construct the holder that when the stem of the lamp isengaged therewith the lamp will be firmly held against any lateral swinging movement and will consequently at all times be presented directly forwardly with relation to the cap.

Also in the ordinary types of holders the opening or socket into which the stem of the lamp is to be fitted is of substantially uniform diameter and a miner will experience after it has-been removed. for any purpose such for example as lighting or refilling it,

To the front of the cap there is-applied, exteriorly, a supporting base member which, is. indicated in general, by the numeral- 4 and which may comprise a sheet of stiff leather or a sheet of metal or other, material suitable for the purpose, this sheet havinga portion 5 dislhgure 1 is a perspective view of the deposed verticallyin front of the crown 2, an upper end portion 6 which extends rearwardly from the. upper end of the portion 5 7 acetylene lamp, andthis lamp is provided upon its rear-side, as is usual, with an attaching stem 11 which has the-general form of a hook and includes abight portion 12 and 'a bill 13 which latter extends downwardly in spaced relation to the rear side of the lamp. The shank of this hooked stem is indicatedby the numeral l l -and is suitably spaced from the bill 13 and secured in any suitable mannerto the lamp 10;

The supportiii device embodying the invention is indicated in general by the numeral 15 and the same comprises prefer ably, a one piece casting includinga back plate 16 provided at its upper edge with a rearwardly directed ear 17. The end portions of the back plate 16 are provided with openings 18, and a similar opening 19 is provided in the ear 17. In assembling the sup porting member with the base membert, the back plate 16 is disposed against the forward side of the portion 5 of the said base member with the ear 1'? projecting over and in contact with the upper side of the portion the said portions of the base member 4. A boss 21 is provided uponthe forward side Got the base member, and rivets or the like indicated by the numeral are secured through the openings 18 and 19 and through of the back plate 16 and is o f substantially rectangular form and provided, near its uncture with the back plate, with a vertically extending socket 22 which is flared at its upper end as indicated by the numeral 23 and gradually tapered in the direction of its lower end where it is of substantially the same diameter as the bill of the stem 11. A groove 24 is formed in the upper side 7 of the boss 21 and merges at its rear end into the flared upper end 28 of the socket22 and at its forward end merges into the upper end of a groove 25' which is formed vertically in the forward side of the said boss.

In mounting the lamp upon the supporting device embodying the invention, the bill 13 of the hooked stem 11 is inserted into the socket 22 through the flared upper end 23 of said socket, being guided into place by th downwardly converging walls of the socket and will finally come to rest in substantially the position shown 'in Figure '2 of the drawings in which posit-ion it will project through the lowerend of the socket and engage at its extremity against the forward side of the portion 5 of the base member l. The bight 12 of the hooked stem will engage in the groove 24, seating more or less snugly between the side walls of said groove, and in like manner the shank 1d of the stein will engage in the upper portion of the groove 25 and seat between the side walls of said groove. Thus the stem will be i so en a ed as to areclude an ivotal or w swinging movement. with relation to the supporting member, and consequently the the forward side of the portion 5 of the base member 4, there will be no likelihood of the lamp being dropped in the event the wearers head is inclined forwardly.

Another advantage possessed by the holding device embodying the invention lies in the fact that the lamp is supported in position spaced a considerable distance from the crown of the cap so that air may freely circulate between the lamp and cap and'little or no heat will be transmitted to the head of the wearer.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:

As a new articleof manufacture, a supporting member for attachment to a miners cap for supporting a miners lamp by the usual stem of said lam'p, coinprising anat taching plate having terminal portions apertured for the passage of securing ele-' ments and provided with a boss upon its face located between said apertures, the boss being provided with a' vertically extending socket substantially adjacent its juncture with the plate, the socket being flared at its upper end and being closed ,on all sides ends,

except at its upper and lower the upper and forward sides of the boss beingfornied with grooves, the upper end of the groove in'the forward side of the boss and the forward end of the groove in the upper side of the boss merging with each other, and the rear end of the groove in the upper side'of the boss merging with the flared upper end of the socket, the said socket and the said grooves being designed to receive relatively angulai'ly' disposed' portions of the said stem ofthe lamp.
