Be it known that. I, ANDREW CHRISTIAN ANDnRsnN, a" citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary-Spindle Locks, of which the following is a specification.
. This invention relates to locks and latches and especially to locks for vehicle doors. This is a rotary vertical spindle lock. Locks of this character are not broadly new. The improvement resides in the arrangement of the spindle in the case and in the stamped bolt which is provided with a cam follower or roll-back abutment..

The back plate is provided with lugs j which protrude through the openings ,7c 1n the face plate and tapered pins 2 may be driven through perforations m in these lugs to Ahold the back plate assembled to the front plate. 0r the lugs may be turned over to lock the two plates together. A special feature et this construction is the bolt. This bolt has a head p to which is fastened the stamped body portion r. The construction of the head and the stamped body is not claimed in this application but 1n aco-pending application, Ser. No. 522,210,
Vfor this bolt construction is of general application and is not limited to a rotary vertical spindle lock. However, the construction of the cam follower or the roll-back abutment s is new and has special app1ication to a rotary vertical spindle lock. Referring to Fig. 2, a plan View of the bolt will be seen. This bolt comprises a head p cut from a hot-rolled bar and which is spotwelded onto the stamping r. This stamping is provided with an outside roll-back abutment t in the shape of a C. At the rear of the stamping ears u. are turned up at each side and at the rear of these ears are slots o.
A peculiar insert and stamping, shown in perspective in Fig. 7, is adapted to be set in between these ears u. This stamping forms a chair provided with a back and 'a seatz. Legs 10 are provided at the front and these are adapted to be dropped into the recesses 'o and to be turned under to lock the legsto the stamping 1'. (Fig. 3). Key lugs 20 are rovided at the rear of the chair that are a apted to slip in appropriate key notches at the bases of the ears u to lock the chair to the turned-up ears. Hence when the key lugs are slipped into the notches and the legs of the, chair are turned down, the chair. is locked to the main body of the bolt at four places.
The main object oi the construction described is to provide a bolt itfhich is largely a stampin and therefore very' much cheaper to manu aeture and a better production article than a casting or forging.
What l claim ist ln a rotary vertical spindle lock, the
. combination of a case, a. vertical rotary spindle journaled in the case and having a crank throw portion, and a sliding bolt reciprocated by said crank throw portion and cornprising a body in the form of a stamping, and a chair in the forni of a stamping which is secured to the body andis arranged to act as a roll-back abutment to be engaged by said crank throw.
2. lln a rotary vertical spindle lock, the combination of a case, a rotaryT vertical spindie journaled in the case, a sliding bolt re tracted by said spindle and provided with n body portion in the form of a stamping, andv a chair portion provided with portions adapted to lock into the stamping of the body portion to form a roll-back abutment engaged by the vertical spindle to retract the bolt.
3.- In a rotary verticalspindle lock, the combination of a case, a rotary vertical spindle journaled in said case, and a bolt slidably guided in said case and havinga body in the form of a stamping provided with side recesses, and a chair in the form of a stamped folded strip having turned-down legs adapted to engage in the recess of the stamped portion to lock the,chair to the body of the bolt and Jform a roll-back abutment engaged by the rotary spindle to retract the bolt.
4. In a rotary vertical spindle lock, the colnbination of a case, a rotary vertical spindle journaled in the case, and a bolt slidable in the case and provided with a body por tion provided with recesses cut in the sides, and a chair in the form of a stamped folded strip provided with key lugs adapted to lock into the stamped body of the bolt to secure the chair in place to form a roll-back abutment to enable the rotary spindle to retract the bolt.

In a rotary vertical spindle lock, the combination of a case, a rotary vertical spindle journaled in the case and a bolt guided in said case and provided with a stamped body having recesses cut in from the sides, and a chair in the form of a stamping or folded strip provided at the front corners with turned-down legs that are adapted to be clamped in the recess of the stamped body and provided at the rear corners with key lugs adapted to engage in portions of the stamped body of the bolt, said chair forming a roll-back abutment engaged by the spindleA to retract the bolt. l

In a rotary vertical spindle lock` the combination of a case; a rotary vertical spindle journaled in the case, and a bolt slidable in the case and provided with turned-up ears at the sides, and a chair comprisingr a folded strip adapted to engage against the turned-uplugs and complement the same to form a roll-back abutment engaged by a portion of the rotary spindle to retract the bolt. u 7. In a rotary vertical spindle lock, the combination of a case, a rotary vertical spin` dle journaled inthe case, and a bolt slidable in the said case and guided therein having a body in the form of a stamping having at the sides turned-up ears and recesses adjacent the lugs, said turned-up ears provided at their bases with key notches, and a chair comprising a folded strip adapted to fit between the ears with the chair back abutting the front edges of the ears and provided with key lugs adapted to t into the key notches of the turned-up ears and provided at the front ofthe chair with turned-down legs that can be clamped in the recesses to secure the chair in place and form a roll-back abutment against which a portion of the rotary spindle operates to retract the bolt.
9. In a rotary vertical spindle lock, the combination 'of a casing including a front plate, a back-plate, one of which is provided with a vertical corrugation, the other provided with a pressed in portion having a vertical corrugation pressed out from' a part of said pressed in portion, the said corrugations arranged to match together to form spindle bearings,.a vertical spindle -iournaled in said matching corrugations, and a sliding lock reciprocated by said vertical spindle.
10. In a rotary vertical spindle, the com bination of a casing including a front plate, a back plate, said plates provided with pressed in channel portions having vertical matching corrugations pressed out from said pressed in channel p'ortions to form spindle bearings, a vertical spindle journaled in said corrugations, and a sliding lock reciprocated by said vertical spindle.
