.appcation Bled December 20, 1921,
nale; and l do hereby declare that the fo lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The invention is a device operated when the supply of gasoline 'in the tank of an .utomohile has decreased to a predetermined joint to signal to the operator, It maybe esed in gravity feed systems or in connection with a vacuum feed.
in the invention, a gasoline feed pipe leads from the gasoline tank as does also an air pipe. A valve is used in connection with 'the air pipe operable on the lowering of e. float supported by gasoline in the tank to admit air to the air pipe, and cause thev closure of a hall valve, thus making an electric contact and signalling to the operator hy ineens or a hulo convenientlrT located on the dashboard.
ln one Inedication oi. the invention, a vacuum tank is used as a means of creating suction and actuating-the ball valve to' closed position and also drawing the liquid from the tank.
in object of the modification 'o the device used in a gravity Ilf'eed system is the creation a permanent signal operated when the gasoline has reached a piedeter :mined depth.
f in object of the vacuum feed modification is the 'throwing on of a signal at thedecrease ot the gasoline supply, to a predetermined point. ln this case, the operation ot the signal intermittent corresponding With the creation of suction and the cessation thereof' in 'the vacuum tank.
An important feature of both modiiieations is the provision of a float which is accurately adjustable to operate at any desiied depth of gasoline` lli. further object is' the location of the circuit closing contactsat e. point .remote trein the gasoline tank and, in fact, from gesolne so as to eliminate all possibility of an explosion resulting from the electric Contact. l
@ther important objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds,
Serial No. 523,661.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawing, in which `Figure 1 is a side elevation of the inven-` tion.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the modification wherein a vacuum tank is used.
Figure 3 is a cross section of the ball valve, and
Figure e is a cross section of thevoat valve.
Figure 5 is a cross section of a, modification of the signalling means.
The structure shown in Figures 3 and 4 appear in both the modification Where the vacuum tank is used and that in which it is not used.
The same reference character indicates the saine part throughout the figures.
ln Figure 1, pipe 11 communicates with carburetor and with gasoline tank 12`or feeding gasoline to the carbureter. Pipe 14 connects 'with the manifold 13 and has threaded thereon, T 15 into one end of which is threaded a connection 16 on pipe 17, which pipe is grounded electrically at 18 and con- 'nectedI to closure 19 bymeans of an intern nelly threaded cap 20 which is screwed tightly upon nipp e 21 integral ith 61osure 19. Closure 19 is threaded iii rnally `and in connection `:vith pipe,22 and 23.
Closure 19 has a constriction at v24, `With 'which valve 25 contacts fo1-preventin air is downwardly directed to prevent the entrance of Water and maybe provided with .from entering pipe 17 through vent 26 w ich; v y
gasoline toa predetermined point and thereh move valve to permit air to enter pipe l through vent 26. l
T 15 is provided with a constriction 33 providing a valve seat Jor ball 3l which has limited vertical movement resting in its lovverrnost nosition on connection 16 as shown in Figure 1, and in its elevated position, as shown in Figure 3. T 15 has a nipple 35, in which an extension 36 oinsulation 37 a fuel tank, a. vacuum tank permanently oonnected therewith, a float positioned within said fuel tank, a tube having a constructed end connected with said vacuum tank and e valve `controlled by said flea-t and controllin the admission of air to the other end of sai tube, whereby when air is admitted to said tube said member will move to the con stricted end of said tube and prevent further flow of air therethrough.
4. The combination of means for producing a Suction, a transparent tube having one end eonneete thereto, a, movable member closely fitting said tube, a fuel supply tank, e
and means controlled by the levelof fuel in said tank for admitting air to the other end of said tube, whereby when air is admitted to said tube said member will move towards the 'first mentioned end of said tube.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hund at B'Tilwaukee, in thel county of Miiwaukee and State of Wisconsin.
